House cancels vote on GOP bill to end shutdown

Oct 15 2013, 9:36pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 16 (IANS/EFE) The US House of Representatives will not vote Tuesday evening after all on the bill prepared earlier in the day by Republican lawmakers to attempt to end the government shutdown, which has been going on since Oct 1 due to the lack of a budget agreement, and avoid a default.

The chairman of the House Rules Committee, Pete Sessions (R-Texas), confirmed Tuesday evening that "there will be no vote" on the bill, despite the fact that earlier in the day the spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner had said the matter would be brought to a vote before midnight.

It appears that the decision not to bring the bill to a vote reflects a lack of agreement within the Republican Party on the issue given that just minutes after the bill was presented to the House Rules Committee for review, the panel announced that it would postpone its hearing indefinitely, a move suggesting there are not enough votes to pass the measure.

Earlier Tuesday, Michael Steel, a spokesman for Boehner, had said in a statement that "the House will vote tonight to reopen the government and avoid default".

The legislation, Steel said, would "end Obamacare subsidies for elected officials and staff in Washington, and pressure Senate Democrats to accept more sensible" time frames for reopening the government and authorising the treasury to borrow more money.

The Republican plan included temporary financing of the federal government up until Dec 15 and it would have raised the debt ceiling through Feb 7, 2014.

The text of the House bill eliminated the ability of the US Treasury to use "extraordinary measures" to temporarily extend the debt limit.

The Senate, which in a bipartisan effort led the negotiations over the weekend, decided Tuesday to suspend them with the aim of getting the GOP-controlled House, which precipitated the shutdown, to negotiate its own proposal.

Lawmakers were racing against the clock all day in the halls of Congress, talking with one another and seeking an accord, just two days before the current debt limit deadline, but it appeared Tuesday evening that those efforts had ultimately failed to bear fruit.

Tea party reveals hottest political issue of 2014

Aug 27 2014 6:43pm CDT | Source: WND

Multiple new polls show tea-party activists see the border crisis as the most important issue of the 2014 midterm elections, and the movement once known for its insistence upon less spending and smaller government is ready to make border security a critical issue heading into November. Surveys from Gallup, Polling Company Inc. and the Tea Party Patriots show immigration as the top issue for voters in 2014. Democrats historically have an edge in the debate due to their insistence that the vast m ...

Republicans Threaten To Shut Down The Government If Obama Extends Relief To Immigrants

Aug 27 2014 1:53pm CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

CREDIT: AP/Alex Brandon Rep. Steve King (R-IA) floated the possibility of shutting down the government on Wednesday if President Obama issues an executive action granting deportation relief to more undocumented immigrants. King’s comments come just one day after Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) suggested that Republicans in the Senate use “funding mechanisms to address this issue.” “If the president wields his p ...

Boehner Haters Head Back to Congress

Aug 27 2014 4:55am CDT | Source: Taegan Goddard's Political Wire

Bloomberg: "Ten of the 12 House Republicans who didn't support John Boehner's 2013 selection as speaker are cruising to November victories, despite the business community's attempts to knock some of them off." "It's an ominous twist in the Republican civil war between the Tea Party and the business community. Neither side had enough power to annihilate the other, so the fight goes into the 2016 presidential campaign. ...

Standing in the ashes

Aug 24 2014 3:13pm CDT | Source: WND

If in the future America sees another catastrophe perpetrated by terrorists and commentators in the media start asking how could this happen, think back to what I’m about to say. America has a failed foreign policy! I don’t believe for a minute that Iran has stopped working on a nuclear weapons program. Iran supports Hamas and ISIS, ISIL and/or the Islamic State. Iran has given weapons and financial support to both of these groups, ...

HUFFPOST HILL - Policing: A Tankless Job

Aug 21 2014 4:27pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Steve King pointedly noted that there’s no Congressional White Caucus, however there is an informal group known as “Congress.” The GAO thinks the Bowe Bergdahl swap was illegal so we should…send him back? And Paul Ryan told Time Magazine he doesn’t like John Boehner’s tobacco-heavy odor. Don’t be surprised if a wounded Boehner sounds off in Newsweek about his distaste for the smell of whey protein and Brylcreem. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Thursday, August 21st, 2014: ...

The following is a guest post from Sefi Keller and Shai Cohen. Keller is a graduate student at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and co-founder of Israel’s fact-checking program PolitiWatch. The vote to authorize House Speaker John Boehner’s lawsuit against President  Obama will make the House itself the plaintiff in a legal procedure that aims to restrain presidential power. This was a notable event in American politics. In Israel, however, Members of Parliament petitioning the court in ...

Immigration Reform: Go Incrementally, Mr. Obama, and Go Before November

Aug 21 2014 8:36am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Reform of our immigration system, long described as "broken" by Democrats and Republicans alike, has been on the docket forever. Campaigning to get to the White House, candidate Barack Obama not only promised but guaranteed immigration reform in his first year in office. That guarantee has not been delivered on, not in President Obama's first term, even with a Democratic-controlled Congress, because of the President's need to rescue an economy on the abyss. Nor has an all ...

#DirtyDenier$ Day 13: Congressman Tom Latham

Aug 20 2014 5:01am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Congressman Tom Latham represents a large, windy district in Iowa. But unfortunately the winds of change don't seem to have blown strongly enough to change his outdated views on energy and climate policy. Latham supports "an all of the above energy policy that utilizes responsible energy exploration and efficient uses of American sources of energy". But his version of "all of the above" has meant promoting the agenda of dirty polluters rather than investin ...
