House cancels vote on GOP bill to end shutdown

Oct 15 2013, 9:36pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 16 (IANS/EFE) The US House of Representatives will not vote Tuesday evening after all on the bill prepared earlier in the day by Republican lawmakers to attempt to end the government shutdown, which has been going on since Oct 1 due to the lack of a budget agreement, and avoid a default.

The chairman of the House Rules Committee, Pete Sessions (R-Texas), confirmed Tuesday evening that "there will be no vote" on the bill, despite the fact that earlier in the day the spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner had said the matter would be brought to a vote before midnight.

It appears that the decision not to bring the bill to a vote reflects a lack of agreement within the Republican Party on the issue given that just minutes after the bill was presented to the House Rules Committee for review, the panel announced that it would postpone its hearing indefinitely, a move suggesting there are not enough votes to pass the measure.

Earlier Tuesday, Michael Steel, a spokesman for Boehner, had said in a statement that "the House will vote tonight to reopen the government and avoid default".

The legislation, Steel said, would "end Obamacare subsidies for elected officials and staff in Washington, and pressure Senate Democrats to accept more sensible" time frames for reopening the government and authorising the treasury to borrow more money.

The Republican plan included temporary financing of the federal government up until Dec 15 and it would have raised the debt ceiling through Feb 7, 2014.

The text of the House bill eliminated the ability of the US Treasury to use "extraordinary measures" to temporarily extend the debt limit.

The Senate, which in a bipartisan effort led the negotiations over the weekend, decided Tuesday to suspend them with the aim of getting the GOP-controlled House, which precipitated the shutdown, to negotiate its own proposal.

Lawmakers were racing against the clock all day in the halls of Congress, talking with one another and seeking an accord, just two days before the current debt limit deadline, but it appeared Tuesday evening that those efforts had ultimately failed to bear fruit.

White House: Order For Surge of Immigration ID's For 'Ongoing Operations'

Oct 22 2014 1:18pm CDT | Source: Big Government

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest addressed an order for a “surge” of immigration IDs of up to 9 million in one year, but said the move is no confirmation President Obama will issue a major executive amnesty after the election. “I think those who are trying to read into those specific orders about what the president may decide are a little too cleverly trying to divine what the president’s ultimate conclusion might be,” he said. As reported by Bre ...

Hensarling: GOP-Controlled Congress Should Massively Increase Guest-Worker Permits for Foreigners

Oct 21 2014 11:18pm CDT | Source: Big Government

If Republicans gain control of Congress, Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) wants more guest-worker visas for high-tech and low-skilled workers in addition to a piecemeal immigration reform. Hensarling, the House Financial Services Committee Chair whom the pro-amnesty Wall Street Journal touted as the "leading candidate to eventually succeed John Boehner as Speaker," would "like to see immigration reform that allows more H-1B visas for high-tech ...

Coulter: This Election Is Too Important to Sit Out

Oct 21 2014 11:05pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Conservative columnist and author of “Never Trust a Liberal Over 3-Especially a Republican,” Ann Coulter argued that the 2014 election is too important for Republicans to sit out on Monday’s “Hannity” on the Fox News Channel. “If we have the Senate, too, with Mitch McConnell and John Boehner passing repeals of Obamacare and terrific things, the media won't be able to keep maintaining it’s Republicans who are doing nothing but passing birth control laws. They will have to report ...

House Race Between Carl DeMaio And Scott Peters Seems Like A TV Drama

Oct 21 2014 9:11pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A late-night break-in, a stolen campaign playbook that ended up in the hands of the opponent and sexual harassment accusations made by a fired staffer against one of the candidates. It sounds like a soap opera, but it's a real-life race for a House seat in California that's one of the tightest in the country, and perhaps, the most dramatic. No criminal charges have been filed. The compet ...

Studies Show GOP Can Win Elections Opposing Amnesty in 2014: Impact of Latino Vote Overrated

Oct 21 2014 5:13pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Despite the incessant lectures from the mainstream press, establishment Republican politicians, and consultants about the need to pass amnesty legislation to appeal to Hispanic voters, two recent studies of the Latino electorate suggest that Republicans can oppose amnesty and still win elections in the midterms and beyond.  A Pew Hispanic Research study found that though a record 25.2 million Latinos (11 percent of eligible voters nationwide) are eligible to v ...

Politicians Are No Scientists On Climate Change, But They're Happy To Give Medical Opinions On Ebola

Oct 21 2014 1:47pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

"I'm not a scientist, but …" has become something of a cliché among politicians who want to weigh in on climate science without actually having to say whether they believe it. But when it comes to Ebola, a number of the same not-a-scientist politicians have been more than happy to provide their medical opinions, as Think Progress documented Monday. Many of these politicians have made false statements about Ebola, from claiming one cou ...

Contemplating A Republican Senate

Oct 20 2014 7:45pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

As frightening a prospect as it is for progressives and liberals and other assorted Democrats, it is now impossible not to contemplate what two years of a Republican-led Senate would be like. While Democrats are still putting on a brave face about their chances in the 2014 midterms ("Our ground game is going to win the day!"), the possibility of Republicans picking up the six Senate seats they now need to gain control of the chamber is very ...
