House cancels vote on GOP bill to end shutdown

Oct 15 2013, 9:36pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 16 (IANS/EFE) The US House of Representatives will not vote Tuesday evening after all on the bill prepared earlier in the day by Republican lawmakers to attempt to end the government shutdown, which has been going on since Oct 1 due to the lack of a budget agreement, and avoid a default.

The chairman of the House Rules Committee, Pete Sessions (R-Texas), confirmed Tuesday evening that "there will be no vote" on the bill, despite the fact that earlier in the day the spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner had said the matter would be brought to a vote before midnight.

It appears that the decision not to bring the bill to a vote reflects a lack of agreement within the Republican Party on the issue given that just minutes after the bill was presented to the House Rules Committee for review, the panel announced that it would postpone its hearing indefinitely, a move suggesting there are not enough votes to pass the measure.

Earlier Tuesday, Michael Steel, a spokesman for Boehner, had said in a statement that "the House will vote tonight to reopen the government and avoid default".

The legislation, Steel said, would "end Obamacare subsidies for elected officials and staff in Washington, and pressure Senate Democrats to accept more sensible" time frames for reopening the government and authorising the treasury to borrow more money.

The Republican plan included temporary financing of the federal government up until Dec 15 and it would have raised the debt ceiling through Feb 7, 2014.

The text of the House bill eliminated the ability of the US Treasury to use "extraordinary measures" to temporarily extend the debt limit.

The Senate, which in a bipartisan effort led the negotiations over the weekend, decided Tuesday to suspend them with the aim of getting the GOP-controlled House, which precipitated the shutdown, to negotiate its own proposal.

Lawmakers were racing against the clock all day in the halls of Congress, talking with one another and seeking an accord, just two days before the current debt limit deadline, but it appeared Tuesday evening that those efforts had ultimately failed to bear fruit.

While the President Parties, the Pundits Preen

Jul 31 2014 3:36pm CDT | Source: Big Government

In the past two weeks, President Obama was in both Texas and California, ignoring his constitutional duties in order to play pool, drink beer in a bar and visiting a deli pretending to be for the little guy before heading off to parties with wealthy socialites at political fundraisers.  Ignoring the crisis he created at our border, including dead children floating in the Rio Grande as he toasted with the super wealthy, Obama acts as if he answ ...

Remember that time Democrats tried to impeach Bush? Because they sure don't

Jul 31 2014 10:56am CDT | Source: Big Government

While we enjoy the blizzard of fundraising letters Democrats are using to siphon cash out of their gullible supporters, and MSNBC's round-the-clock saturation coverage of the non-existent impeachment threat, let's pause for a little comic relief from the reliably amusing Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), who thinks House Speaker John Boehner's lawsuit against Obama for executive over-reach is actually "a veiled attempt at impeachment." I ask my colleagues to o ...

Bill Kristol to House Republicans: Kill Boehner's Border Bill Or Face Wrath Of Your Constituents

Jul 31 2014 9:47am CDT | Source: Big Government

Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol has advised House Republicans on Thursday morning that should vote against House Speaker John Boehner’s border crisis bill. “The House Republican leadership is having trouble getting 218 votes for its immigration bill,” Kristol wrote Thursday morning. ”The policy objections to the bill seem convincing to me—among them that it seems to appropriate more money, on a pro-rated monthly basis, than the president's proposal; t ...

House Rules Committee Considers King Amendment

Jul 30 2014 6:59pm CDT | Source: Big Government

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In order to obtain more conservative votes some provisions might be added to the House border bill, according to House Rules Committee Chairman Pete Sessions. “I think the issue is whether there will be provisions added to get their vote, not provisions added that would diminish the bill,” he told reporters Wednesday. Sessions said that a provision targeting President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals – which allows certain ...

Dem. Rep: 'Not a Cost' if Illegal Children are Turned Over to Families in U.S.

Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Jim McGovern argued Wednesday that once unaccompanied illegal immigrant minors are turned over to their family members in the United States, they are no longer a burden on the United States.  “You talk about the costs of these children, if they are reunited with their families here in the United States, there is not a cost, so,” McGovern said at a House Rules Committee hearing on the emergency supplemental appropriations bill dealing ...

Jul 30 2014 2:50pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Conservative icon and talk radio host Rush Limbaugh said Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) has emerged as the "biggest enemy" of the mainstream media and the open-borders and pro-amnesty activists on the illegal immigration issue.  "What Jeff Sessions is doing is what the Republican Party at large should be doing, Limbaugh said on his Wednesday radio show. Sessions: Reid Will Use Granger Bill to Resurrect Gang of 8

Jul 30 2014 9:45am CDT | Source: Big Government

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) said that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) will use the immigration bill proposed by Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX) to bring back the Gang of Eight immigration proposal. On Wednesday’s “Laura Ingraham Show,” Sessions told guest host John Hinderaker that there is “a terrible concern” that if Granger’s bill passed, the Gang of Eight proposal would be brought back to life in conference committee negotiations.  “Harry Reid said that...he intended to d ...

The Nuclear Option: Impeaching Obama Is a Losing Strategy for the GOP

Jul 30 2014 7:58am CDT | Source: Big Government

All this talk of impeaching the president is the stupidest Republican political strategy so far this century. Sure, anybody can make a strong argument that President Obama is one of the worst presidents in modern history. All the hope and change he promised in 2008 have turned into bitter despair and misery. On the domestic front, while unemployment figures are not as bad as they once were, anybody who thin ...

Karl Rove: Shame on Conservative Republicans Who Are Floating Impeachment

Jul 30 2014 7:28am CDT | Source: Big Government

Campaign strategist Karl Rove denounced talk about Republicans impeaching President Obama, including White House efforts to stoke the rumors. On Fox News Wednesday morning, Rove referred to Obama as the “cynic in chief” who was fueling the rumors for the sake of fundraising. “How cynical. How pathetic,” he said. Rove reminded the audience that House Speaker John Boehner denied that Republicans had any plans to impeach the president, blaming some conservative Republ ...
