Senate reaches deal to end shutdown, avoid default

Oct 16 2013, 2:12pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 16 (IANS) Hours before a looming midnight deadline, Democratic and Republican leaders Wednesday announced a deal to end the partial government shutdown, now in its 16th day, and avoid a possible US default.

Washington, Oct 16 — Hours before a looming midnight deadline, Democratic and Republican leaders Wednesday announced a deal to end the partial government shutdown, now in its 16th day, and avoid a possible US default.

With a key Republican conservative leader Senator Ted Cruz saying he wouldn't try to block the measure, it is now expected to proceed smoothly through both houses of Congress before it reaches President Barack Obama's desk.

"There is nothing to be benefited by delaying this vote a couple of days versus having it today," Cruz, who has been spearheading conservative strategy in the government shutdown fight, told reporters, emerging from a meeting of the Senate Republican conference Wednesday.

"The timing of the vote will make no difference in the outcome so I don't intend to delay the timing of the vote," he said.

The deal, which would fund the government through January 15 and raise the debt ceiling until Feb 7, is currently expected to be voted on by the Senate late Wednesday afternoon.

The deal, which would also convene a budget conference between the House and the Senate with a mid-December deadline, will then go on to a vote in the House of Representatives.

Both chambers would have to take special steps to get the legislation passed and to send it to Obama's desk before the current US debt ceiling expires Thursday.

Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid and his Republican counterpart, Mitch McConnell, had been working overnight to finalise an agreement that had been in the works all week.

WASHINGTON -- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) dismissed any notions about allowing another federal government shutdown if Republicans retake the upper chamber next year. "I'm the guy that's gotten us out of the shutdowns that some of our members have pushed us into in the past." ...

Marco Rubio & the GOP's Reckless Shutdown Politics

Aug 28 2014 6:55am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Last year, Marco Rubio and his allies like Ted Cruz and Rand Paul spent their summer ginning up support for a risky plan to gut Obamacare or cause a government shutdown. As a result of their reckless gamesmanship, Republicans shut down the government for 16 days, costing the economy $24 billion. What's more, Rubio and his allies voted to prolong the shutdown when they had an opportunity to end it. Immediately after we reopened the government, Republicans recognized their recklessness ...

The Impending Showdown

Aug 27 2014 6:47pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

"It's quiet out there... too quiet." This line (now a full-blown cliché) was usually uttered by sentries in the old Hollywood Westerns, right before a blazing battle erupted -- which is why it seemed so appropriate today. All's been pretty quiet on the political front this August, mostly because town hall "meet your congressman" public events are fast becoming a thing of the past. Oh, sure, there's been some random sniping goi ...

Obama's Legacy: #GoBigObama vs. #DeporterInChief

Aug 27 2014 10:21am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Obama Administration is currently contemplating it's next move on immigration. At the same time Republicans are doing everything they can to signal irrational resistance to doing anything on the issue, we are approaching the end of the summer, during which Obama said he would be considering a unilateral immigration reform. As a legacy, however, anything Obama does will exist next to the 2 million deportations his enforcement has already carrie ...

Exclusive: Rubio Smashes Obama's Planned Executive Amnesty, Shifts From 'Comprehensive' Immigration Reform

Aug 26 2014 2:22pm CDT | Source: Big Government

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) partnered with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to pass a comprehensive immigration bill that would grant citizenship to millions of illegal aliens. That was then – a little over a year ago. Today, in an interview with Breitbart News, the Florida Republican berated President Obama for considering unilateral amnesty, shifted cleanly against “comprehensive” ...

Aug 26 2014 9:33am CDT | Source: Big Government

Columnist and former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan said that former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) is mulling the possibility of running for president in 2016.   On Tuesday’s “Laura Ingraham Show,” he stated Romney is “obviously looking at it [running for president] and considering it.” And “I think he ought to do it...if that’s the way he believes, but that’s on a personal level, you don’t want to end your life and say ‘I should have done this.’”  Buchanan added that even thoug ...

Glenn Beck Ripped Conservatives While Trying to Get CNN Deal

Aug 25 2014 8:01pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Glenn Beck was bashing Americans opposed to illegal immigration, decrying partisan politics, and positioning himself toward the center just as he was reportedly trying to strike a deal to get his programming on CNN. CNN's Brian Stelter reported that "the idea fizzled fast and talks aren't expected to resume." CNN and HLN are expected to lay off at least 550 more people in what is being called another "bloodbath," and Beck was repo ...
