Senate passes debt deal to end standoff

Oct 16 2013, 9:36pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 17 (IANS) Hours before a looming midnight deadline, the Senate voted to reopen the government and raise the US debt ceiling, closing in on a deal to avert risk of first debt default in American history.

Washington, Oct 17 — Hours before a looming midnight deadline, the Senate voted to reopen the government and raise the US debt ceiling, closing in on a deal to avert risk of first debt default in American history.

The eleventh hour deal hammered out earlier by Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his Republican counterpart Mitch McConnell received broad bipartisan support. The vote was 81-18.

Shortly after the Senate vote Wednesday night, President Barack Obama said that if the House, as expected, follows the Senate in passing the deal to end the budget standoff, "I will sign it immediately. We'll begin reopening our government immediately."

"There's a lot of work ahead of us, including our need to earn back the trust of the American people that's been lost over the last few weeks," he said. "And we can begin to do that by addressing the real issues that they care about."

The House is expected to approve the bill and send it to the president's desk for signature within hours.

The deal funds the government through Jan 15, raises the debt limit until Feb 7 and includes a provision in the deal that strengthens verification measures for people getting subsidies under Obama's signature healthcare law, nicknamed Obamacare.

It also sets a mid December deadline for completing budget negotiations between the Republican controlled House and the Democrat led Senate for a long-term spending plan.

Federal employees who were furloughed as a result of the shutdown will receive back pay "as soon as practicable," according to the bill's text.

In what was seen as a major victory for Obama, Republicans faced with the Oct 17 debt ceiling deadline were forced to accept a deal with only minor concessions from Democrats.

Earlier Republican Speaker John Boehner signalled the end of the stand off with a formal announcement that Republicans will not oppose the bill en masse.

"The House has fought with everything it has to convince the president of the United States to engage in bipartisan negotiations aimed at addressing our country's debt and providing fairness for the American people under ObamaCare," Boehner said in a statement.

"That fight will continue. But blocking the bipartisan agreement reached today by the members of the Senate will not be a tactic for us."

Nany Pelosi: Use Border Crisis to 'More Quickly' Pass Amnesty Bill

Jul 30 2014 5:57pm CDT | Source: Big Government

On Tuesday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Congress should use the border crisis to pass comprehensive amnesty legislation.  At a Congressional Progressive Caucus hearing on the border crisis, Pelosi said the influx of illegal immigrant juveniles is more reason to pass an amnesty bill that Democrats in the Senate like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) have said they want to attach to the House's border bill.  "We sho ...

Vulnerable Senate Dems Fear Obama Executive Amnesty

Jul 30 2014 2:42pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Vulnerable Senate Democrats facing tight reelection bids this cycle are telling President Obama to go through the legislative process rather than enact unilateral amnesty himself. “I think this is a congressional issue and I encourage [House] Speaker [John] Boehner in the House to bring up a bill, to vote on a bill for immigration reform so that we can then put it into conference,” North Carolina Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan said Tuesday accord ...

GOP Filibusters Tax Hike On Firms Moving Overseas

Jul 30 2014 11:09am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican senators blocked an election-year bill Wednesday to limit tax breaks for U.S. companies that move operations overseas. The bill would have prohibited companies from deducting expenses related to moving their operations to a foreign country. It also would have offered tax credits to companies that move operations to the U.S. from a foreign country. The Senate voted 54-42 to end debate on the bill, six short of the 60 votes needed to advance it. The White ...

House Democrats Fighting Hard Against Republicans' Border Bill

Jul 30 2014 11:07am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- House Democrats are aggressively urging members to oppose a GOP-authored bill to address the border crisis. And with Republican senators voicing opposition of their own -- both to the House bill and to a Senate Democratic alternative -- it appears increasingly unlikely that Congress will send a border bill to the president's desk before leaving for the August recess. The Senate held its first vote Wednesday on a bill to provide $2.7 bi ...

Krauthammer: Obama's Amnesty Move Impeachable

Jul 30 2014 7:33am CDT | Source: Big Government

On Tuesday's "Special Report" on the Fox News Channel, Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer offered his thoughts on the merits of impeachment should President Barack Obama unilaterally pursue amnesty for 5 to 6 million illegal immigrants here, as the president has suggested in the past. Krauthammer explained the action would be an impeachable offense, but said he would be against it because of its political consequences. Partial ...

Senate Budget Committee ranking member Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) said in a statement Tuesday that House Speaker John Boehner’s border crisis working group’s legislation is a “surrender” to a “lawless president.” “The Obama Administration has openly declared its plan to implement a unilateral executive amnesty for 5–6 million more illegal immigrants,” Sessions said. Appeals Court Rejects Tax Challenge To Obamacare

Jul 29 2014 3:44pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — In the latest effort to sidetrack Obamacare, a federal appeals court on Tuesday rejected a challenge by a conservative group that said Congress imposed new taxes unconstitutionally when it created the Affordable Care Act. The Pacific Legal Foundation and a small-business owner, Matt Sissel, argued that the Affordable Care Act is a bill for raising revenue and that it violated the Origination Clause of the Constitution because it began in ...
