Senate passes debt deal to end standoff

Oct 16 2013, 9:36pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 17 (IANS) Hours before a looming midnight deadline, the Senate voted to reopen the government and raise the US debt ceiling, closing in on a deal to avert risk of first debt default in American history.

Washington, Oct 17 — Hours before a looming midnight deadline, the Senate voted to reopen the government and raise the US debt ceiling, closing in on a deal to avert risk of first debt default in American history.

The eleventh hour deal hammered out earlier by Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his Republican counterpart Mitch McConnell received broad bipartisan support. The vote was 81-18.

Shortly after the Senate vote Wednesday night, President Barack Obama said that if the House, as expected, follows the Senate in passing the deal to end the budget standoff, "I will sign it immediately. We'll begin reopening our government immediately."

"There's a lot of work ahead of us, including our need to earn back the trust of the American people that's been lost over the last few weeks," he said. "And we can begin to do that by addressing the real issues that they care about."

The House is expected to approve the bill and send it to the president's desk for signature within hours.

The deal funds the government through Jan 15, raises the debt limit until Feb 7 and includes a provision in the deal that strengthens verification measures for people getting subsidies under Obama's signature healthcare law, nicknamed Obamacare.

It also sets a mid December deadline for completing budget negotiations between the Republican controlled House and the Democrat led Senate for a long-term spending plan.

Federal employees who were furloughed as a result of the shutdown will receive back pay "as soon as practicable," according to the bill's text.

In what was seen as a major victory for Obama, Republicans faced with the Oct 17 debt ceiling deadline were forced to accept a deal with only minor concessions from Democrats.

Earlier Republican Speaker John Boehner signalled the end of the stand off with a formal announcement that Republicans will not oppose the bill en masse.

"The House has fought with everything it has to convince the president of the United States to engage in bipartisan negotiations aimed at addressing our country's debt and providing fairness for the American people under ObamaCare," Boehner said in a statement.

"That fight will continue. But blocking the bipartisan agreement reached today by the members of the Senate will not be a tactic for us."

Who says Obama's not transparent?

Sep 29 2014 6:25pm CDT | Source: WND

Random thoughts on the passing scene: What a non-judgmental society amounts to is that common decency is optional – which means that decency is likely to become less common. The biggest issue in this fall’s election is whether the Obama administration will end when Barack Obama leaves the White House or whether it will continue on, by appointing federal judges with lifetime appointments who share President Obama’s contempt for th ...

Profiles In Cowardice

Sep 29 2014 6:17pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The United States Congress is currently abdicating one of its most solemn duties: declaring when America is at war, and with whom. This is nothing short of disgraceful, and every member of Congress who didn't actively push their leadership to hold a vote should be ashamed of themselves right now. Because by completely abdicating their constitutional warmaking power to the executive branch, they are displaying nothing ...

Ben Carson CREDIT: AP Photo/Susan Walsh Dr. Ben Carson, a popular Tea Party activist and Fox News contributor who says he will likely seek the Republican nomination for president in 2016, said on Sunday that he is seriously concerned that there will not be 2016 elections in the United States because the country could be in anarchy by that point. His reasons: the growing national debt, ISIS, and the U.S. Senate’s refusal to cons ...

Ted Cruz: Morning in America Awaits if Republicans Don't Abandon Conservative Values

Sep 27 2014 1:52pm CDT | Source: Big Government

At the Values Voter Summit on Friday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), a potential 2016 presidential candidate, emphatically told conservatives that they will only reverse the damage that radical Democrats have done to the country if they do not run away from their values in a country that is still right of center.  Cruz believes morning in America will await if Republicans unashamedly embrace their values. He has said that when Republicans like Ronald Reagan do, they win. A ...

Is the GOP Giving Up On Tax Cuts?

Sep 27 2014 7:55am CDT | Source: Big Government

As Politico points out, "Though tax cuts have been a mainstay of their campaigns since at least Ronald Reagan, though the top marginal tax rate is now the highest since the 1980s, though the party could win control of both chambers of Congress for the first time in almost a decade, Republicans are barely mentioning reducing tax rates with voters." So, what's actually going on? Republicans will tell you the election is all about ISIS, or Obama, or maybe even Harry ...

Friday Talking Points -- Eric Holder's Record

Sep 26 2014 8:00pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

We have to pre-empt the usual Friday Talking Points column this week, because when we started writing about Eric Holder in the awards section, it just kind of grew and grew as a subject until it essentially consumed the rest of the column. We still have our notes on all the political foibles and foofaroo from the past week, and we promise we'll keep this list handy and try to review parts of it in next week's column, mostly because some of the stories were real doozies (like the Kan ...

Sep 26 2014 7:09pm CDT | Source: WND

Attorney General Eric Holder Eric Holder ran the most politicized Justice Department in U.S. history, did enormous damage to the rule of law that will be nearly impossible to reverse and actively worked to make voter fraud easier, according to a former DOJ official who recently authored a book on Holder’s years as attorney general. Hans von Spakovsky served as counsel for the assistant attorney general for ...

Daily Beast: Ted Cruz 'Electrifies' Values Voter Summit

Sep 26 2014 3:46pm CDT | Source: Big Government

From The Daily Beast: Texas is well known for its barbeque but, once again on Friday, Ted Cruz showed that he’s better at serving up red meat than any other resident of the Lone Star State. In a speech to assembled crowd of social conservatives at the Values Voter Summit, the first-term Texas senator repeatedly brought attendees to their feet as he hit every note perfectly for the crowd. Cruz started the speech by referencing the one year annivers ...

Friday in Washington D.C. at the Family Research Council's 2014 Values Voter Summit, Sen.Ted Cruz (R-TX) fired up the audience with a rallying call to fight to ensure the religious freedoms guaranteed in the constitution are upheld by electing Republicans to take back the U.S. Senate.
