Senate passes debt deal to end standoff

Oct 16 2013, 9:36pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 17 (IANS) Hours before a looming midnight deadline, the Senate voted to reopen the government and raise the US debt ceiling, closing in on a deal to avert risk of first debt default in American history.

Washington, Oct 17 — Hours before a looming midnight deadline, the Senate voted to reopen the government and raise the US debt ceiling, closing in on a deal to avert risk of first debt default in American history.

The eleventh hour deal hammered out earlier by Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his Republican counterpart Mitch McConnell received broad bipartisan support. The vote was 81-18.

Shortly after the Senate vote Wednesday night, President Barack Obama said that if the House, as expected, follows the Senate in passing the deal to end the budget standoff, "I will sign it immediately. We'll begin reopening our government immediately."

"There's a lot of work ahead of us, including our need to earn back the trust of the American people that's been lost over the last few weeks," he said. "And we can begin to do that by addressing the real issues that they care about."

The House is expected to approve the bill and send it to the president's desk for signature within hours.

The deal funds the government through Jan 15, raises the debt limit until Feb 7 and includes a provision in the deal that strengthens verification measures for people getting subsidies under Obama's signature healthcare law, nicknamed Obamacare.

It also sets a mid December deadline for completing budget negotiations between the Republican controlled House and the Democrat led Senate for a long-term spending plan.

Federal employees who were furloughed as a result of the shutdown will receive back pay "as soon as practicable," according to the bill's text.

In what was seen as a major victory for Obama, Republicans faced with the Oct 17 debt ceiling deadline were forced to accept a deal with only minor concessions from Democrats.

Earlier Republican Speaker John Boehner signalled the end of the stand off with a formal announcement that Republicans will not oppose the bill en masse.

"The House has fought with everything it has to convince the president of the United States to engage in bipartisan negotiations aimed at addressing our country's debt and providing fairness for the American people under ObamaCare," Boehner said in a statement.

"That fight will continue. But blocking the bipartisan agreement reached today by the members of the Senate will not be a tactic for us."

Thom Tillis Defeats Kay Hagan

Nov 5 2014 12:17am CST | Source: Big Government

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The optimism exuded by Republican state House Speaker Thom Tillis’ campaign and supporters Tuesday in the early evening, panned out later tonight when the challenger defeated the incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) in one of the tightest, most expensive races of the cycle. The early vote totals showed Hagan leading but as the night wore on Tillis gained ground and as it became apparent that Tillis could win, hi ...

Erin Bilbray Midterm Election Results

Nov 4 2014 10:48pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Democratic businesswoman and nonprofit founder Erin Bilbray lost to Rep. Joe Heck (R-Nev.) in the state's 3rd District Tuesday. Though Bilbray was originally considered one of Democrats' best chances at unseating a Republican incumbent, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said she had not run a good campaign. Heck was first elected to Congress in 2010. He previously served in the Nevada state legislature. B ...

Sen. Burr: 'Cautiously Optimistic' Thom Tillis Will Beat Kay Hagan

Nov 4 2014 7:34pm CST | Source: Big Government

CHARLOTTE, NC — Senior senator from North Carolina Richard Burr said Tuesday that he was “cautiously optimistic” that Sen. Kay Hagan's (D-NC) Republican challenger state House Speaker Thom Tillis would win.  “I think when you look at where the national issue set is for the American people, it’s national security, its economic security, it’s immigration, it’s missed opportunities with energy expansion, those lend themselves to a Thom Tillis or a Scott Brown,” ...

Can GOP really stop the Obama agenda?

Nov 4 2014 6:29pm CST | Source: WND

If the Republicans win back the Senate, will it really make much of a difference in the direction the country is taking? Yes, with control of both Houses of Congress, bills can get passed much easier and then sent on to Obama for him to inevitably veto. But will things really change, or will they worsen? The best-case scenario is that with a Senate win, we can stop the bleeding that is leaving our ...

Why I argue with Ann Coulter

Nov 4 2014 6:18pm CST | Source: WND

I watch election results to gauge whether America has become freer or more tyrannical. It’s hard to know whether Tuesday’s results will make much difference. Often, individual liberty erodes in ways neither major political party much cares about. Last weekend, I suffered through the New York Marathon. I suffered not because I ran 26.2 miles but because I live near Central Park, and at Marathon time, officials tur ...

T Minus 1: GOP Has Clear Path to Senate Majority

Nov 4 2014 12:49pm CST | Source: Big Government

On Tuesday, voters across the country will go to the polls for this last national election of the "Obama Era." What began with a bang six years ago and talk of a permanent Democrat majority will end with a whimper. The GOP is certain to solidify its enormous recent gains at the state level and extend its majority in the House. It is also increasingly likely that Republicans finally will take control of the Senate and end Harry Reid's ...

The World After Citizens United: Here Is Your First $100 Million Senate Race

Nov 4 2014 11:33am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton joined Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) on the election trail Oct. 25 to rally Democrats ahead of Tuesday's crucial midterm elections. The two Democrats had more in common than just a stage: Hagan's re-election race, like Clinton's 2000 bid, was in the process of becoming one of the most expensive Senate races in modern U.S. history. In 2000, while her husband former President Bill Clinton still occ ...

Liberals Wrongly Repeat the Race Hustler Attack

Nov 4 2014 9:39am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The New York Times last week ran its first front-page story of the season on political "race-baiting" -- except it raised questions about Democratic rather than Republican campaigns. There are really three stories here. The first involves the decision by Democrats to campaign on racial issues. One example comes from a flyer circulating in Georgia that reads, over a photo of black children holding "don't shoot" signs, "if you want to prevent a ...

5 Reminders For The Republican Party on Election Day

Nov 4 2014 8:55am CST | Source: Big Government

With Republicans expected by virtually every prognosticator to take back the Senate in today’s midterm election, the GOP has reached a turning point. Win or lose, the Republican Party will have to do some serious thinking about next steps. Should the GOP fail to turn the Senate red, the party leadership will be seen by the conservative base as an utter failure – to somehow blow an electoral opportunity with a highly-unpopular second t ...
