US Congress passes debt deal to end crisis

Oct 16 2013, 10:48pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 17 (IANS) Less than two hours before a midnight deadline, the US Congress voted to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling ending a 16-day stand off that risked first ever debt default in American history.

Washington, Oct 17 — Less than two hours before a midnight deadline, the US Congress voted to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling ending a 16-day stand off that risked first ever debt default in American history.

The eleventh hour deal hammered out earlier by Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid his Republican counterpart Mitch McConnell received broad bipartisan support in both chambers.

The vote was 81-18 in the Democratic led Senate with only 18 of the 45 Republicans opposing and 285- 144 in the Republican controlled House that had engaged in a bitter budget fight to derail President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law nicknamed Obamacare.

In what was seen as a major victory for Obama, Republicans faced with the Oct 17 debt ceiling deadline conceded defeat as they were forced to accept a deal with only minor concessions from Democrats.

Shortly after the Senate vote Wednesday night, Obama said that if the House, as expected, follows the Senate in passing a deal to end the budget standoff, "I will sign it immediately. We'll begin reopening our government immediately."

"There's a lot of work ahead of us, including our need to earn back the trust of the American people that's been lost over the last few weeks," he said. "And we can begin to do that by addressing the real issues that they care about."

The bill now goes to the president's desk for signature to end the crisis that posed worldwide economic repurcussions.

The deal funds the government through Jan 15, raises the debt limit until Feb 7 and includes a provision in the deal that strengthens verification measures for people getting subsidies under Obamacare.

It also sets a mid December deadline for completing budget negotiations between the House and the Senate for a long-term spending plan.

Earlier Republican Speaker John Boehner signalled the end of the stand off with a formal announcement that Republicans will not oppose the bill en masse.

"The House has fought with everything it has to convince the president of the United States to engage in bipartisan negotiations aimed at addressing our country's debt and providing fairness for the American people under ObamaCare," Boehner said in a statement.

"That fight will continue. But blocking the bipartisan agreement reached today by the members of the Senate will not be a tactic for us."

No balanced budget, no pay for Senate

Oct 25 2014 5:45pm CDT | Source: WND

Recent polls suggest former Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land is trailing Democrat Rep. Gary Peters in the state’s open U.S. Senate race, but Land says she will close the small gap and win because intrusive government is crippling her state, and her opponent is nothing more than a “rubber stamp” for Harry Reid and the Obama agenda. “It’s going to go down to Election Day,” Land said. “We always knew that. This is a ...

Failed Senate Gun Bill Would Not Have Stopped Marysville School Gunman

Oct 25 2014 3:24pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Even though Democrats quickly followed news of the Marysville-Pilchuck High School shooting with renewed calls for the kind of background checks contained in the failed Senate gun control bill, the facts demonstrate one clear point: The failed Senate gun bill would not have stopped the Marysville gunman.  This is because the gun used by Jaylen Fryberg was "legally" obtained by his father, and then taken by the younger Fryberg and misused to kill one and wound four on October 24. ...

Gohmert: If Obama orders amnesty, cut off funds

Oct 24 2014 7:31pm CDT | Source: WND

New reporting shows the Obama administration released illegal aliens accused of violent crimes, including murder, despite various officials repeatedly insisting only those with very minor infractions were set free while they waited for deportation or for their cases to be resolved in court, and Rep. Louie Gohmert says it’s time for President Obama to tell the truth and protect Americans. The congre ...

Exclusive–Mark Levin: Tom Donohue's 'Chamber of Horrors' Is Democrats' Secret Weapon to Keep Senate

Oct 24 2014 4:01pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Radio’s Mark Levin told Breitbart News that if a Georgia or Louisiana loss is the reason why the Democrats keep control of the Senate in November, it’s the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s fault. “I hope everyone understands that if Harry Reid remains Senate Majority leader because of a Georgia or Louisiana loss, the responsibility rests with Tom Donohue and big business,” Levin said in an email. “The Chamber of Commerce is a chamber of horrors.” Levin was responding to the ne ...

Kay Hagan, Thom Tillis In A Battle Of 'Extremes' In North Carolina

Oct 24 2014 7:29am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina's Senate race boils down to a battle of extremes. At least that's how Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan and Republican challenger Thom Tillis want voters to see it. Running against President Barack Obama as much as he is against Hagan, Tillis calls the president's health care law an "unworkable mess," blasts American foreign policy as muddled and weak, and bemoans a $17 trillion-plus national debt. "Kay Hagan's gone to Washingto ...

Senate Democrats Not Running Or Already Retired Sit On $52 Million

Oct 23 2014 4:20pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- Senate Democrats who aren't running for re-election this year and those who have retired were sitting on nearly $52 million in campaign cash at the end of September, even as their party's candidates are slogging through a difficult electoral cycle. That untouched pot of money has become a sore subject for Democratic strategists, several of whom privately complained that the lawmakers were risking the Senate majority to ...
