No 'official notification' from Saudi Arabia on UNSC seat: Ban

Oct 18 2013, 2:42pm CDT | by IANS

United Nations, Oct 19 (IANS) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Friday noted Saudi Arabia's reported decision to not to sit on the UN Security Council next year despite winning a two-year term.

United Nations, Oct 19 — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Friday noted Saudi Arabia's reported decision to not to sit on the UN Security Council next year despite winning a two-year term.

The UN chief, however, said he was yet to receive any official notification. "I have not received any official notification in this regard."

"I have taken note of the media reports regarding the decision of Saudi Arabia," reported Xinhua citing the UN chief in a press statement. "But I would like to caution that I have not received any official notification in this regard."

"I encourage all member states to fully engage with the principal organs of the United Nations while advancing their efforts to improve their working methods," he said.

"We also are looking forward to working very closely in addressing many important challenges with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, particularly to bring an end to the war in Syria, to help Palestinian people to achieve a viable State, and to help the current transition in Yemen..."

"..., and also to extend humanitarian assistance to all the people in need, and to combat terrorism and nuclear proliferation," Ban said.

On Thursday, the UN General Assembly elected Chad, Chile, Lithuania, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia to a two-year term in the Security Council.

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs Friday said in a statement that the kingdom apologises for not accepting the two- year term on the Security Council until the UN council is reformed and enabled, effectively and practically, to carry out its duties and responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security.

The statement blamed the Security Council for failing to address the Syrian crisis, the Palestinian cause, and to make the Middle East region free of weapons of mass destruction.

BEIRUT (AP) — Clashes erupted between al-Qaida-linked Syrian rebels and U.N. peacekeepers in the Golan Heights on Saturday after the militants surrounded their encampment, activists and officials said, as the international organization risked being sucked further into the conflict. Other U.N. peacekeepers were able to flee from a different encampment that that was also surrounded by rebels of the Nusra Front, al-Qaida's Syrian affiliate, they said. The clashes came after Syrian rebel gro ...

Does No One Care About the Plight of 'Drowning' Samoa? Apparently Not...

Aug 30 2014 7:29am CDT | Source: Big Government

The Prime Minister of Samoa has launched a heartfelt plea in the Guardian newspaper on behalf of his allegedly drowning Pacific nation. (H/T Bufo 75) Unless concerted international action is taken to deal with the threat of 'climate change', apparently, small islands like his will be "inundated by rising sea levels." Tragically, it looks as if this request by the splendidly named Tuilaepa Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi, is destined to fall on deaf ears. Even a fair chunk of the Gu ...

Senate Needs to Ratify Nuke Test Ban Treaty

Aug 29 2014 7:49am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

International Day Against Nuclear Tests (August 29) is a call to action for the U.S. Senate. They have some unfinished business. It's time to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). The treaty bans all nuclear test explosions. It's a bridge to nuclear disarmament that we must cross. If we don't, we are not going to make any further progress in this vital component of international peace. As UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says, ...

Killer App in Jerusalem

Aug 21 2014 7:50am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Jerusalem -- I can't sleep at night. It's not because of the rockets, although Israel is under constant rocket fire. And it's not because of iron dome, although it makes loud booms. The other night at our Jerusalem hotel our six-year old daughter was awoken by the sound of the alarms as a Kassam rocket headed toward the capital. She was frightened. Her older sisters calmed her. They ran to a shelter. Iron dome made its boom and she tried ...

Obama, ISIS and Christian crucifixions, Part 1

Aug 17 2014 3:33pm CDT | Source: WND

Editor’s note: Chuck Norris’ weekly political column debuts each Monday in WND and is then syndicated by Creators News Service for publication elsewhere. His column in WND often runs hundreds of words longer than the subsequent release to other media. Pundits and news agencies have reported and questioned the validity that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, is beheading children in its conquests of Syria and Iraq. But there is one fact that can’t be contested: that the Sunni-domin ...
