No 'official notification' from Saudi Arabia on UNSC seat: Ban

Oct 18 2013, 2:42pm CDT | by IANS

United Nations, Oct 19 (IANS) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Friday noted Saudi Arabia's reported decision to not to sit on the UN Security Council next year despite winning a two-year term.

United Nations, Oct 19 — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Friday noted Saudi Arabia's reported decision to not to sit on the UN Security Council next year despite winning a two-year term.

The UN chief, however, said he was yet to receive any official notification. "I have not received any official notification in this regard."

"I have taken note of the media reports regarding the decision of Saudi Arabia," reported Xinhua citing the UN chief in a press statement. "But I would like to caution that I have not received any official notification in this regard."

"I encourage all member states to fully engage with the principal organs of the United Nations while advancing their efforts to improve their working methods," he said.

"We also are looking forward to working very closely in addressing many important challenges with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, particularly to bring an end to the war in Syria, to help Palestinian people to achieve a viable State, and to help the current transition in Yemen..."

"..., and also to extend humanitarian assistance to all the people in need, and to combat terrorism and nuclear proliferation," Ban said.

On Thursday, the UN General Assembly elected Chad, Chile, Lithuania, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia to a two-year term in the Security Council.

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs Friday said in a statement that the kingdom apologises for not accepting the two- year term on the Security Council until the UN council is reformed and enabled, effectively and practically, to carry out its duties and responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security.

The statement blamed the Security Council for failing to address the Syrian crisis, the Palestinian cause, and to make the Middle East region free of weapons of mass destruction.

Protect the Future of Peacekeeping

Nov 4 2014 8:38am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

On a Friday in early October -- amid a flood of news on ISIL and an escalating Ebola crisis -- it might have been easy to miss this headline: Nine United Nations Peacekeepers were ambushed and killed by gunmen in Mali. Less than a week later, another Peacekeeper in Mali was killed in a rocket attack. However, much as these tragedies may seem part of peacekeeping's inherent risks, they were more than just a couple sto ...

UN Climate Change Report Delivers Stark Warnings

Nov 2 2014 6:35am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Climate change is happening, it's almost entirely man's fault and limiting its impacts may require reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero this century, the U.N.'s panel on climate science said Sunday. The fourth and final volume of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's giant climate assessment didn't offer any surprises, nor was it expected to since it combined the findings of three earlier reports released in the past ...

We Must Not Even Think of Accusing Leonardo DiCaprio of Hypocrisy

Nov 1 2014 3:45pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Friday’s crash of the Virgin Galactic space-plane in California was, of course, a tragedy: One test-pilot was killed, and another seriously injured.  But there is, at least, a silver lining: There’s no need to worry about another possible issue concerning Richard Branson’s spaceflight venture—namely, that all those internal-combustion-powered flights would contribute to the dread danger of climate change.   Indeed, to the untrained eye and t ...

U.N. chief 'shocked and alarmed' by Gaza tunnels

Oct 24 2014 8:47pm CDT | Source: WND

(Israel Hayom) U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited southern Israel and the Gaza Strip on Tuesday and told both sides what they wanted to hear. After meeting in Gaza with members of the Palestinian unity government, Ban said, “I am here with a very heavy heart. The destruction which I have seen coming here is beyond description. This is much more serious destruction than I saw in 2009 immediately after the violence at that time.” Ban vowed to southern Israel residents ...
