Red carpet welcome for PM as he arrives in Moscow

Oct 20 2013, 8:46am CDT | by IANS

Moscow, Oct 20 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday arrived on a two-day official visit to Russia to a red carpet ceremonial welcome.

Moscow, Oct 20 — Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday arrived on a two-day official visit to Russia to a red carpet ceremonial welcome.

The prime minister's special aircraft touched down at Vnukovo International airport here amid a cloudy day with the temperature at 5 degrees Celsius, but bitterly cold.

He was received by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.

Both sides are set to ink six agreements, including one on the transfer of sentenced persons and on science and technology, during their annual summit Monday.

Earlier, before leaving on the visit, the prime minister had described the annual summit he would hold with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday as an "important feature of our special and privileged strategic partnership".

He said India's scope of ties with Russia is "unique, encompassing strong and growing cooperation in areas such as defence, nuclear energy, science and technology, hydrocarbons, trade and investment and people to people exchanges".

He said he would convey to President Putin "the importance we attach to our relations with Russia, and I will use this visit to strengthen our partnership in every possible way".

Despite the high expectations ahead of the visit, India and Russia are not to ink the commercial agreement on the third and fourth reactors for Kudankulam.

The two leaders are set to go over the main pillars of the bilateral strategic partnership, including defence, energy, space, science and technology, economy.

Manmohan Singh would be conferred an honorary doctorate by Moscow State Institute of International Relations, which he said is a "testimony of the relations between our two countries".

Obama's Fighting A New Kind Of War -- While Critics Are Stuck in the Past

Oct 21 2014 1:20pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Critics of Obama's war strategy seem to want him to fight a new kind of war with old weapons. As I described last time, they judge success and failure by traditional measures -- in particular, by who controls how much ground. But in a new kind of war -- counterinsurgency -- such measures don't always apply, at least not in the same way. Think about all the anxiety over how much territory ISIS cu ...

ISIS, Ukraine, the South China Sea and the End of the Era of American Power

Oct 20 2014 12:53am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

A colleague called me during the run-up to the Iraq war in March 2003. It is going to be unlike anything the world has ever seen. Shock and Awe. The war will be over before it starts. An inside player in the Bush administration, he was in a position to know what was in store. Shock and Awe is a the military doctrine that "focuses on the psychological destruction of the enemy's will to fight rather than the physical destruction of its military ...

Warsaw Has Lots of Apples - and Candles

Oct 10 2014 6:25am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WARSAW -- People in Poland are eating apples these days. Lots of apples. Here in Warsaw, they're pressed into your hands at a street festival, or baked into piles of pies and cakes. You see them everywhere. It's an act of defiance. Moscow has banned the importing of fruits and vegetables to Russia, in retaliation for the West's sanctions against the country for supporting the separatists in Ukraine. Last year, Poland sold more than $400 million worth of produce to Russia, ...

Obama’s New Oil Wars

Oct 9 2014 8:35am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Washington Takes on ISIS, Iran, and Russia Cross-posted with TomDispatch.com It was heinous. It was underhanded.  It was beyond the bounds of international morality. It was an attack on the American way of life.  It was what you might expect from unscrupulous Arabs.  It was “the oil weapon” -- and back in 1973, it was directed at the United States. Skip ahead four decades and it’s smart, it’s effective, and it’s the American way.  The Obama administration has appropriated it as a major ...
