Obama defends health care reform

Oct 21 2013, 9:28pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 22 (IANS) US President Barack Obama Monday defended his signature health care reform, promising "tech surge" to fix the widespread problems of its new online health insurance marketplace and get millions of uninsured Americans enrolled for coverage.

Washington, Oct 22 — US President Barack Obama Monday defended his signature health care reform, promising "tech surge" to fix the widespread problems of its new online health insurance marketplace and get millions of uninsured Americans enrolled for coverage.

Obama made his first public remarks addressing the Affordable Care Act, often dubbed as the ObamaCare, since its centerpiece, the online healthcare exchange opened for business Oct 1, has been undergoing website glitches and under strong criticism, Xinhua reported.

Speaking in the Rose Garden of the White House, Obama said " nobody is madder" than him about the fact that the online insurance marketplace "has not worked as smoothly as it is supposed to work".

"And there's no excuse for the problems," he added.

However, Obama also stressed that the team is now doing everything possible to get the website working "better, faster, sooner".

"And we are confident that we will get all the problems fixed," he pledged.

Obama also tried to make the case for his signature health-care overhaul. Despite the recent technical glitches, he argued, the Affordable Care Act was "much more" than just a website.

He suggested people "bypass the website and apply by phone or in person," while waiting for the website to be fixed.

Obama encouraged those uninsured Americans not to lose faith in the new online marketplace which has been launched just three weeks.

He put up several examples of Americans saving money on insurance plan offered on the online marketplace, and argued that the essence of the law is to make health insurance available to people.

"So here's the bottom line, the product, the health insurance is good. The prices are good. It is a good deal. People don't just want it, they're showing up to buy it," said Obama.

He said 20 million visitors have checked the website, which showed "the demand is there".

The Senate unanimously passed SB967 as states and universities across the U.S. are under pressure to change how they handle rape allegations. The bill now goes to Gov. Jerry Brown, who has not indicated his stance o ...

The Myth of a Post-Racial America

Aug 28 2014 8:39pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The election of Barack Obama was the Lexington and Concord in the latest great battle of race in America. We are a nation at war with itself. For all of our desire to move beyond the narrow confines of many of the events of our tragic history, we cannot. The president's election gave new life to what had been lying dangerously dormant for the better part of 50 years. Perhaps it's an unspoken concerted effort ...

Trayvon Martin, meet Michael Brown

Aug 28 2014 6:50pm CDT | Source: WND

All it took for Al Sharpton and the other race hustlers to rush off to Ferguson, Missouri, was for a 6-foot-4, 300-pound gangbanger named Michael Brown to be shot while struggling for a cop’s gun. That’s also all it took for Eric Holder to decide to send the FBI in to investigate what he decided within mere hours was a federal crime. My question is why none of these actions are ever taken when, as is usually the case, it’s some black t ...

Krauthammer: Obama Statement 'Russia Is Weakened' Is 'Delusional'

Aug 28 2014 6:49pm CDT | Source: Big Government

On Thursday’s “Special Report” on the Fox News Channel, Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer criticized President Barack Obama’s statement earlier that Russia had been weakened for its latest incursion into Ukrainian territory. Krauthammer explained that gestures from U.S. officials not backed up by action show how weak the United States is and that Russia is ultimately coming out as the victor. ...

Rand Paul opportunistic -- and wrong -- on race

Aug 28 2014 6:49pm CDT | Source: WND

Police brutality? Yes! Militarization of the police force? You bet! “A Government of Wolves”? Yes again! “The Rise of the Warrior Cop”? No doubt! But racism? Nonsense on stilts! So why have some libertarians applied this rhetoric to the murder-by-cop of black teenager Michael Brown, in Ferguson, Missouri? The same people who would argue against color-coded hate-crime legislation – and rightly so, for a crime is a crime, no matter the skin pigment of perp or ...

Rand Paul is right: Attacking secular states helps Islamists

Aug 28 2014 6:47pm CDT | Source: WND

The newest line from the Obama administration is that the slaughter of Christians and Shia Muslims in Iraq is the fault of President Assad of Syria. The fact that the United States, Europe, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have spent over $50 billion so far to topple the secular government of Syria is not a factor at all, according to the White House. Neither is the Obama-orchestrated “Arab Spring,” which has cost countless lives and left thousands dead in ...

Control of the U.S. Senate is the most important prize at stake in this year’s midterm elections. There are 36 Senate seats up for election – 21 are held by Democrats, 15 by Republicans. The most hotly contested races are in North Carolina, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alaska, New Hampshire, Oregon, Iowa, Colorado and West Virginia, where Democrats are fighting to re-elect incumbents or hold on to long-held Democratic seats. But Democrats also have a chance to pick up two traditional Republican se ...
