Russia to propose India's name for Geneva II talks on Syria

Oct 22 2013, 12:18am CDT | by IANS

Moscow, Oct 22 (IANS) Russia, a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a major global player, is to propose India's name for participating in the Geneva II peace conference next month.

Moscow, Oct 22 — Russia, a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a major global player, is to propose India's name for participating in the Geneva II peace conference next month.

India has consistently counseled against military intervention in Syria and spoken out strongly on the need for negotiations among all the parties in Syria to resolve the situation in the violence wracked country.

Geneva II is to be held Nov 23-24 and a preliminary meeting to be held before that in early November.

Russia is proposing to speak out at the preliminary meeting to include India in the Geneva II conference, which would aim to find a political solution to Syria where rebels are fighting to oust the regime of President Bashar al -Assad, said official sources.

The preliminary meeting would be attended the US, EU, Russia, China, the regional neighbours of Syria like Iran, Turkey, Lebanon, the rebel parties to Syria and President Assad.

India's participation would be confirmed only when the other countries agree to it, said the source, adding that was a major recognition for India

During Monday's India-Russia summit, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh commended Russia's moves to defuse the crisis in Syria. Russia has played a major role by averting a US military strike on Syrian-government held areas over the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime.

Due to Russia's intervention, Syria agreed to open up its chemical weapons arsenal to international inspection and for destruction.

India and Russia share similar views on Syria and on the need for negotiations among all sides to find a way out of the crisis, said an official.

UN Climate Summit Will Be a Time of Reckoning

Sep 17 2014 9:44am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Next week President Obama will attend the United Nations Climate Summit in New York. Over 125 heads of government will gather for the event, more than the 2009 climate talks in Copenhagen. This summit is not designed to generate a legal agreement, but it will offer an important moment of reckoning. People should expect leaders to say: Here is what my country is already doing to reduce climate change pollution. ...

Indian Patients Lose under Indian Patent Regime

Sep 12 2014 7:00am CDT | Source: National Center for Policy Analysis

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Global Intellectual Property Center, India ranks last in its list of 25 countries when it comes to intellectual property laws. NCPA Senior Fellow John Graham explains how the country's patent laws hurt Indian patients: because few drugs receive strong patent protection, drug-makers are loath to sell their medicines in India. Because of India's weak intellect ...

(Clinical) Fear and Loathing in America

Sep 9 2014 11:45am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The world is more frightening and complex than ever. We are in more danger. We are less aware. We are nearing a war to end all wars. We are closer to death--metaphorical or literal. So say the pundits, at least. Indeed, with the reach of the media--and particularly news--it's easy to believe we're in constant danger--physical and cultural. But it's also somehow too convenient to think that the world is so complex and so scary (naturally, we fear the unknown). Statistic ...
