Border issues to figure in talks as PM flies to China

Oct 22 2013, 1:00am CDT | by IANS

Moscow, Oct 22 (IANS) After a visit to Moscow, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday left for Beijing on the second leg of his visit where border issues are set to top the agenda of his talks with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

Moscow, Oct 22 — After a visit to Moscow, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday left for Beijing on the second leg of his visit where border issues are set to top the agenda of his talks with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

The prime minister held over four and a half hours of restricted talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin Monday signifying the closeness of their relations and he now flies into comparatively tougher terrain in China.

Before leaving for his two-nation visit, the prime minister had said that India and China have together "reached important consensus on maintaining peace and tranquility on the border and made preliminary progress toward settlement of the India-China boundary question".

He said that both countries have "areas of concern" which are being addressed by both sides with "sincerity and maturity, without letting them affect the overall atmosphere of friendship and cooperation".

The Border Defence Cooperation Agreement (BDCA), which aims to prevent face-offs between Indian and Chinese troops along the over 4,000 km Line of Actual Control (LAC), is expected to figure in talks. The blueprint of the BDCA was cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security last week.

Water sharing issues, the adverse trade figure and visa issues are expected to figure in the talks.

Ahead of the prime minister's Beijing visit, China's foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said China is "looking forward" to the visit.

Addressing a regular briefing Monday, she said the Indian prime minister's visit is of "great importance to deepen China-India strategic partnership as the visit follows the visit of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang to India in May".

Manmohan Singh would meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and jointly address a presser with him at the Great Hall of the People Wednesday. He is to address the Communist Party's Central Party School Thursday before flying back.

China's move to issue stapled visas to two archers from Arunachal Pradesh is expected to figure in the talks too.

Faux War

Sep 1 2014 7:10pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

War, children, is just a shot away, it's just a shot away. Paul Simon, Gimme Shelter (1969) Wars can, of course, be started quite by accident. They can be started because the warriors on one side or the other are overly enthusiastic about what they are doing and their enthusiasm leads them to do things that may have unintended consequences. They can also be started because one side or the other lacks a sense of direction and accidentally invades ...

Putin's push in Arctic Ocean

Sep 1 2014 5:10pm CDT | Source: WND

While the world’s attention was distracted by his incursions into eastern Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin quietly made another provocative move that could lead to a direct confrontation with the United States. The Russian Navy sent a ship to remote Wrangel Island, planted a Russian naval flag on Aug. 20, and announced plans to build a naval base there for Russia’s Pacific Fleet. Wrangel Island is a frozen, nea ...

Why President Obama's Visit to Estonia Really Matters

Sep 1 2014 4:37pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

This post was co-authored with András Simonyi. President Obama's brief stopover in Tallinn en route to the NATO Summit in Wales this week couldn't have been be any timelier. Showing up in person matters a lot to the Balts who are increasingly feeling the heat after Russia's invasion of Crimea and subsequent aggression in Eastern Ukraine. But besides reaffirming strong U.S. support for the security of its Baltic allies, Obama should also praise Estonia, Lat ...

Romney Blast Hillary and Obama for "Bend Over Backward" Appeasement

Aug 31 2014 12:54pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Mitt Romney appeared on WNYM's "The Cats Round Table" with John Catsimatidis today and had some harsh words for both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama when it came to foreign policy. "Hillary Clinton and her boss Barack Obama were extraordinarily naive and misguided in describing a 'reset' with Russia—her smiling ear-to-ear with a big red button that says 'reset' on it, giving it to the Russian Fore ...

Aug 31 2014 12:27pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Senate Foreign Relations chairman Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) blasted President Barack Obama's inaction against Russia's “direct invasion” into Eastern Ukraine saying it is a "watershed moment"  and if the United States does not aggressively assist Ukraine the "consequences" will "flow even far beyond" Russia. Menendez said the West should give Ukraine “defensive weapons” because “thousands of Russian troops are h ...

The Myth of a Post-Racial America

Aug 28 2014 8:39pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The election of Barack Obama was the Lexington and Concord in the latest great battle of race in America. We are a nation at war with itself. For all of our desire to move beyond the narrow confines of many of the events of our tragic history, we cannot. The president's election gave new life to what had been lying dangerously dormant for the better part of 50 years. Perhaps it's an unspoken concerted effort to keep race as a center plot in the story that is America. Perhaps i ...

Has Hillary ever been right?

Aug 28 2014 6:51pm CDT | Source: WND

Sen. Rand Paul raises an interesting question: When has Hillary Clinton ever been right on foreign policy? The valkyrie of the Democratic Party says she urged President Obama to do more to aid Syrian rebels years ago. And last summer, she supported air strikes on Bashar Assad’s regime. Had we followed her advice and crippled Assad’s army, ISIS might be in Damascus today, butchering Christians and Alawites and aiding the Islamic State in Iraq in overrunnin ...
