EU summit kicks off amid US spying allegations

Oct 24 2013, 2:16pm CDT | by IANS

Brussels, Oct 25 (IANS) Top leaders of the European Union (EU) gathered here Thursday for a two-day summit that is likely to be dominated by the alleged US spying on its allies, Xinhua reported.

Brussels, Oct 25 — Top leaders of the European Union (EU) gathered here Thursday for a two-day summit that is likely to be dominated by the alleged US spying on its allies, Xinhua reported.

Although the summit is to focus on digital economy, growth and jobs, as well as the economic and monetary union, many EU leaders from the 28 member states expressed anger over the fresh reports of US spying on them.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the alleged US spying on her mobile phone communications was "unacceptable". In a phone call on the eve of the summit, she told US President Barack Obama that trust among allies would need to be rebuilt.

Earlier Thursday, the German foreign ministry summoned the US ambassador as German politicians voiced their outrage over the allegations, which were denied by the White House.

This week, French President Francois Hollande also asked for an explanation from Obama following allegations of US spying on millions of French phones.

The latest spying allegations come months after European media reported, based on the information leaked by Edward Snowden, that the US national security agency had bugged EU offices.

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy insisted Thursday that the summit would still discuss economic and social issues, adding that growth could return to most EU member states in the coming year.

But the summit's planned topics could be further overshadowed by immigration concerns in the aftermath of a shipwreck off an Italian island. British Prime Minister David Cameron has urged EU institutions to cut red tape on business.

Americans Don't Care We Spied on You

Oct 3 2014 8:27am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The German journalists seated before us shook their heads in disbelief. Why didn't we, their professional counterparts, understand their outrage over NSA surveillance in Germany? They were shocked the United States would spy on its close ally, but perhaps equally astonished by how the American public is neither upset nor particularly surprised by the scandal. The news of tapping Chancellor Angela Merkel's phone certainly did not resonate in the State ...

Incest Should Be Legal, Experts Argue

Sep 29 2014 11:21am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

It may not be "good" for the family, but a German ethics panel said incest should still be legal. NBC News cites a new report by the German government's Ethics Council recommending the decriminalization of sex between adult siblings. "The majority of the German Ethics Council believes that it is not appropriate for a criminal law to preserve a social taboo,” Dr. Michael Wunder, a psychotherapist and member of the council, told NBC News. “But ...

Sep 29 2014 7:13am CDT | Source: Big Government

BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom – George Osborne used a series of media interviews at the Conservative conference to pledge a free vote in parliament on the EU referendum. This will allow backbench MPs to make their own decision on whether to support an in/out vote. The Chancellor refused to be drawn on whether he would support withdrawal from the EU if negotiations to bring back powers to the UK failed. The Conservatives pledged to ...

CIA Halts Spying In Europe

Sep 19 2014 11:39am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — The CIA has curbed spying on friendly governments in Western Europe in response to the furor over a German caught selling secrets to the United States and the Edward Snowden revelations of classified information held by the National Security Agency, according to current and former U.S. officials. The pause in decades of espionage, which remains partially in effect, was designed to give CIA officers time to examine whether they were being careful enough and to evaluate ...

Germany Debates Reconstruction of 'Hitler's Church'

Sep 19 2014 8:01am CDT | Source: Big Government

For the moment, efforts to halt the reconstruction of the Garrison Church in Potsdam, scene of a pivotal moment in Hitler’s rise to power, have failed. On Wednesday afternoon, the Potsdam city parliament rejected a referendum which would have transferred decision-making control over the reconstruction to the citizens. This is the latest chapter in an ongoing debate that has bitterly divided the city. The Garrison Church, an 18th-century Protestant Baroque church ...

British Prime Minister David Cameron has warned that multiculturalism is fostering extremist ideology and directly contributing to homegrown Islamic terrorism. U.K. Inde ...

Anti-Semitism: Know It. Name It. Shame It.

Sep 16 2014 10:13am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

There is talk of a "new anti-Semitism" sweeping the globe, but all I see is the same irrational hatred aimed at the same perplexed victims, who are once again left wondering what has energized such bile. Whenever it appears, anti-Semitism has an ancient hatred at its core, and yet as the centuries roll by, it is rarely the same thing twice. Its nature is opportunistic and reactive, always morphing, mutating, hiding in the dark corners of politics and cult ...
