Iran, UN-Arab envoy want political solution for Syria

Oct 26 2013, 12:46pm CDT | by IANS

Tehran, Oct 26 (IANS) Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and UN-Arab League joint special representative to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi Saturday called for finding a political solution to the ongoing Syrian crisis.

Tehran, Oct 26 — Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and UN-Arab League joint special representative to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi Saturday called for finding a political solution to the ongoing Syrian crisis.

Brahimi, who arrived in Tehran Saturday, expressed hope that with the help of Syria's neighbours, "we could mobilize all parties to solve the Syrian issue", Xinhua reported.

"What is happening in Syria is a humanitarian crisis," said Brahimi, adding that "crimes against Syrian people by all sides should be stopped".

Also, Zarif said "conflicts in Syria can only be solved by the Syrian people ... and we can only offer assistance" for political solutions.

About Iran's role in the upcoming Geneva II talks on Syria, Brahimi said participation of Iran is "natural and necessary".

"If invited to the Geneva II talks, Iran will attend the conference with the aim to find a political solution" to the Syrian problem, said Zarif.

On Oct 7, US State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said the US might agree with Iran's participation in the conference if Tehran backs the "Geneva I Communique," which called for a transitional government in Syria.

The US and some western countries have accused Iran of supporting the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war and called Iran "part of the problem".

Iran has said that it will not accept any precondition to its attending the Geneva II meeting.

Being the main regional ally of the Syrian government, Iran has condemned foreign intervention and "terrorists' involvement" in the Syrian conflict.

American Ties to Israel Remain Strong, Despite Obama's Efforts

Nov 3 2014 2:27pm CST | Source: Big Government

On Sunday, I had the opportunity to join guest host Danny Seaman on Israel's Voice of Israel, to discuss the most recent thorn in U.S.-Israel relations--namely, the "chickensh*t" comment by an unnamed Obama official. One point I tried to make, among others, was that broad support for Israel among the American people is as strong as ever. It will survive this administration (and may even be thriving as a form of opposition to Obam ...

This article originally appeared in The Daily Beast: No piece of cloth throughout history has sparked more controversy as the veil. Many Muslim women are forced to wear it daily. The hijab has a spectrum, of course, from its most radical embodiments, the niqab, which covers the entire face, to loose fitting headscarves. Saudi Arabia comes come second only to Iran in using the power of the stick (the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue an ...

Washington Must Not Ignore Iran's Threat against Camp Liberty

Oct 30 2014 4:10am CDT | Source: Big Government

The Iranian regime has been conspicuously furthering its agendas in Iraq while a U.S.-led coalition is fast busy countering the mounting threat of the Islamic State, an extremist group that has occupied large swaths of Iraq and Syria in past months. Included among Tehran’s strategic goals in Iraq are the empowerment of its proxy Shiite militia forces and the further suppression of Iranian dissidents residing in Camp Liberty. Unless Washington takes the correct measures and cou ...
