Iran, UN-Arab envoy want political solution for Syria

Oct 26 2013, 12:46pm CDT | by IANS

Tehran, Oct 26 (IANS) Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and UN-Arab League joint special representative to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi Saturday called for finding a political solution to the ongoing Syrian crisis.

Tehran, Oct 26 — Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and UN-Arab League joint special representative to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi Saturday called for finding a political solution to the ongoing Syrian crisis.

Brahimi, who arrived in Tehran Saturday, expressed hope that with the help of Syria's neighbours, "we could mobilize all parties to solve the Syrian issue", Xinhua reported.

"What is happening in Syria is a humanitarian crisis," said Brahimi, adding that "crimes against Syrian people by all sides should be stopped".

Also, Zarif said "conflicts in Syria can only be solved by the Syrian people ... and we can only offer assistance" for political solutions.

About Iran's role in the upcoming Geneva II talks on Syria, Brahimi said participation of Iran is "natural and necessary".

"If invited to the Geneva II talks, Iran will attend the conference with the aim to find a political solution" to the Syrian problem, said Zarif.

On Oct 7, US State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said the US might agree with Iran's participation in the conference if Tehran backs the "Geneva I Communique," which called for a transitional government in Syria.

The US and some western countries have accused Iran of supporting the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war and called Iran "part of the problem".

Iran has said that it will not accept any precondition to its attending the Geneva II meeting.

Being the main regional ally of the Syrian government, Iran has condemned foreign intervention and "terrorists' involvement" in the Syrian conflict.

The smell of rank hypocrisy and naked cruelty fills the air at the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. President Obama and his Cabinet are scrambling to find billions in additional funding to accommodate the 60,000 illegal-alien minors who have crossed our southwest border since January. Those minors are being classified erroneously as “refugees” to make their entry into the country appear lawful. Meanwhile, 2,400 real refugees from violence in Iran and Iraq are being denied v ...

MILAN (AP) — An Italian anti-death penalty group says the number of executions worldwide increased last year despite a global trend toward capital punishment abolition. The organization Hands off Cain, based in Rome, said Friday that at least 4,106 people were executed in 2013, up from 3,967 in 2012, due to increases in Iran and Iraq. China remains the world's top executioner, with more than 3,000 executions carried out last year, abo ...

The Strangest Disaster on the Planet Right Now

SYRIA-UN-LEBANON-ASSAD
Who even knows what to call it? The Iraq War or the Iraq-Syrian War would be far too orderly for what's happening, so it remains a no-name conflict that couldn't be deadlier or more destabilizing -- and it's in the process of internationalizing in unsettling ways. Think of it as the strangest disaster on the planet right now. After all, when was the last time that the U.S. and Russia ended up on the same side in a conflic ...
