'Israel intercepted millions of French calls'

Oct 26 2013, 9:30pm CDT | by IANS

Paris, Oct 27 (IANS) Israeli agents hacked millions of phone calls and messages in France, media reported citing a leaked US intelligence document.

Paris, Oct 27 — Israeli agents hacked millions of phone calls and messages in France, media reported citing a leaked US intelligence document.

Israeli agents were behind a cyber attack against the communications networks of the Elysee Palace, intercepting more than 70 million calls and text messages a month, Press TV reported Saturday citing French newspaper Le Monde's report.

The report published in the daily Friday said that France had accused the US of hacking into former French President Nicolas Sarkozy's communications network during the 2012 presidential election and senior intelligence officials visited the US earlier this year to discuss the attempt to hack into the Elysee communication system.

However, according to a classified documents dated April 2013, which was leaked by former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden, the agency denied the allegation and reportedly hinted that Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency, had been involved in the attack.

The NSA's Tailored Access Operations (TAO) that handles cyber attacks denied the allegations and said the US closest allies -- Australia, Britain, Canada and New Zealand -- were also not involved, according to the document.

After the World War-II, the US signed a "no-spying" deal with Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, known as the "Five Eyes" alliance.

"TAO intentionally did not ask either Mossad or (Israel's cyber intelligence unit) ISNU whether they were involved as France is not an approved target for joint discussions," extracts from the document published by Le Monde read.

The report comes amid outrage over claims the US has been monitoring the telephone conversations of 35 world leaders.

"A US official provided NSA with 200 phone numbers to 35 world leader... Despite the fact that the majority is probably available via open source, the PCs (intelligence production centres) have noted 43 previously unknown phone numbers. These numbers plus several others have been tasked," said the classified document provided by Snowden.

Snowden, a former CIA employee, leaked two top secret US government spying programs under which the NSA and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are eavesdropping on millions of American and European phone records and the internet data from major internet companies such as Facebook, Yahoo, Google, Apple, and Microsoft.

The Best Way the U.S. Can Help Fight ISIL Is Staying Out

Sep 15 2014 2:08pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

When president Obama repeated what has become a ritual for every president since George Bush the Elder and from the White House announced a new war on Iraq, the question that should have come to everyone's mind is, "exactly what Middle East success story gives the US both the credentials and credibility to intervene there?" Decent people around the world are revolted by the cruelty shown by ISIL -- not just the sophisticated ...

Libya Becoming 'Terror Hub on EU's Doorstep'

Sep 10 2014 5:20am CDT | Source: Big Government

Libya has been labelled a “nest of terrorists”, as France warns that the country is becoming a hub for terrorism on Europe’s doorstep, and has called on the international community to once again intervene, The Local has reported. “The south is a sort of hub for terrorist groups where they come to re-supply – including with weapons – and re-organise. In the north, the political and economic centres of the country are now at risk from falling under jihadist control. And Libya is t ...

Obama: Mr. "We Don't Have A Strategy Yet" Does the Troubled NATO Summit

Sep 5 2014 12:03pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The UK's Cardiff, Wales is the place where Doctor Who is produced. Which makes it a fine location for the NATO summit. Largely an exercise in fantasy, like the longest-running science fiction show on the planet, NATO, since the end of the Soviet superpower erased the Cold War fear of a Red Army surge through the heart of Western Europe to the Bay of Biscay, has been an institution in search of a new mission ...

On Hollande and the Ukraine Crisis

Aug 5 2014 10:11am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In French, the word "Mistral" has usually carried two associations. Most people know "le Mistral" as the strong wind that periodically sweeps down the Rhône Valley and into the Mediterranean, often heralding a change of season. The wind is actually named after a frequently overlooked French writer, Frédéric Mistral, an expert on the Provençal dialect and the winner of the 1904 Nobel Prize in literature. Today, the "Mistra ...
