Germany steps up attacks on US over spying

Berlin, Oct 28 (IANS/EFE) Germany Sunday toughened the tone of its response to allegations that US intelligence agencies spied on Chancellor Angela Merkel, warning Washington that diplomats and embassies on German soil must obey the law, which considers eavesdropping on telephone calls a crime.

The German government reacted to a wave of media reports that Merkel's mobile phone had been targeted for more than a decade by spies working out of the US embassy in Berlin and that the operation was carried out with the apparent knowledge of US President Barack Obama.

Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said in a statement that "German law applies on German soil", echoing a phrase uttered by Merkel last summer.

The law applies "to Germans and foreigners, to citizens and businesses, and also to diplomats and embassies," Westerwelle said.

Citing US intelligence sources, the Bild am Sonntag daily reported Sunday that Obama was informed of the spying programme by National Security Agency (NSA) director Keith Alexander in 2010, but did not ask that the programme be ended and even requested a full report on the chancellor.

Obama, however, assured Merkel during a phone conversation last Wednesday that he was not aware of the spying programme and would have stopped it if he had known, media reports said.

Germany plans to send a high-level delegation to the US in the next few days to discuss the spying allegations with the White House and US intelligence agencies.

The NSA eavesdropped on calls made with the phone provided to Merkel by her political party until July and even intercepted calls made on the secure phone that the German leader started using last summer, Bild am Sonntag reported.

In July, the chancellor swapped her Nokia for a government-issued encrypted Blackberry Z10.

The phone calls were intercepted by the 18 NSA employees working on the fourth floor of the US embassy in Berlin and reports were sent directly to the White House without first processing them at the spy agency's headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland.

The weekly Der Spiegel reported that Merkel's cell phone has been on an NSA target list since 2002, three years before she took office.

Americans Don't Care We Spied on You

Oct 3 2014 8:27am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The German journalists seated before us shook their heads in disbelief. Why didn't we, their professional counterparts, understand their outrage over NSA surveillance in Germany? They were shocked the United States would spy on its close ally, but perhaps equally astonished by how the American public is neither upset nor particularly surprised by the scandal. The news of tapping Chancellor Angela Merkel's phone certainly did not resonate in the States with ...

It may not be "good" for the family, but a German ethics panel said incest should still be legal. NBC News cites a new report by the German government's Ethics Council recommending the decriminalization of sex between adult siblings. "The majority of the German Ethics Council believes that it is not appropriate for a criminal law to preserve a social taboo,” Dr. Michael Wunder, a psychotherapist and member of the council, told NBC ...

The Chancellor refused to be drawn on whether he would support withdrawal from the EU if negotiations to bring back powers to the UK failed. The Conservatives pledg ...

CIA Halts Spying In Europe

Sep 19 2014 11:39am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — The CIA has curbed spying on friendly governments in Western Europe in response to the furor over a German caught selling secrets to the United States and the Edward Snowden revelations of classified information held by the National Security Agency, according to current and former U.S. officials. The pause in decades of espionage, which remains partially in effect, was designed to give CIA officers time to examine whether they were being carefu ...

Germany Debates Reconstruction of 'Hitler's Church'

Sep 19 2014 8:01am CDT | Source: Big Government

For the moment, efforts to halt the reconstruction of the Garrison Church in Potsdam, scene of a pivotal moment in Hitler’s rise to power, have failed. On Wednesday afternoon, the Potsdam city parliament rejected a referendum which would have transferred decision-making control over the reconstruction to the citizens. This is the latest chapter in an ongoing debate that has bitterly divided the city. The Garrison Church, an 18th-century Protestant ...

British Prime Minister David Cameron has warned that multiculturalism is fostering extremist ideology and directly contributing to homegrown Islamic terrorism. U.K. ...

Anti-Semitism: Know It. Name It. Shame It.

Sep 16 2014 10:13am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

There is talk of a "new anti-Semitism" sweeping the globe, but all I see is the same irrational hatred aimed at the same perplexed victims, who are once again left wondering what has energized such bile. Whenever it appears, anti-Semitism has an ancient hatred at its core, and yet as the centuries roll by, it is rarely the same thing twice. Its nature is opportunistic and reactive, always morphing, mu ...
