UN-Arab League representative to meet Syrian president

Oct 29 2013, 6:30am CDT | by IANS

United Nations, Oct 29 (IANS/ITAR -TASS) The UN-Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, is expected to meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during his visit to the country, UN secretary-general's deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq said.

United Nations, Oct 29 (IANS/ITAR -TASS) The UN-Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, is expected to meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during his visit to the country, UN secretary-general's deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq said.

"He (Brahimi) hopes to meet with President Assad, but at the moment we cannot say exactly when it will happen," said Farhan Haq told ITAR-TASS Monday.

According to him, the UN and Arab League emissary also intended to meet with Syrian officials and representatives of the internal opposition.

According to the UN secretary-general's spokesperson, Brahimi "will stay in Damascus a few days".

According to previous reports, the envoy arrived in Damascus due to "the need for additional contacts with the Syrian side" on issues related to the preparation of Geneva II, the second peace conference on Syria, which UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hopes to convene in November.

Brahimi in recent days has been touring the Middle East in support of the efforts to convene the Geneva II conference. The Algerian diplomat has visited Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Oman and Turkey.

He had a telephone conversation Oct 26 with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

According to the Russian foreign ministry, the parties agreed to continue the joint work to convene a peace conference on Syria, including during consultations in Geneva in the Russia-US-UN format, scheduled for Nov 5.

Russia is expected to be represented by its two Deputy Foreign Ministers, Mikhail Bogdanov and Gennady Gatilov. The American delegation will be led by Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman.

The main obstacle to setting the date for the Geneva 2 conference is the Syrian opposition's unwillingness to take part in negotiations with Damascus.

Over the weekend, 22 extremist groups, which are part of or cooperate with the Free Syrian Army, announced that they would boycott the peace conference.

Sep 19 2014 10:33am CDT | Source: Big Government

A nurse in Turkey told authorities she is tired of treating members from the Islamic State. The nurse, only known as E.G., works in a hospital in Mersin, which is on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and across the ocean from Syria. “We treat them, and they go on to decapitate people,” she said. “I am sick of treating wounded ISIL militants.” The private hospital receives numerous Syrians since the civil war began three years ago. But E.G. is alarmed at the rise ...

Alleged ISIS Photo Controversy Engulfs Sen. John McCain

Sep 18 2014 10:45pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and his aides swear the Syrian “rebels” he was pictured last year with weren’t ISIS members or supporters, and the mainstream media is by and large buying the 2008 GOP presidential nominee’s story.  Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has endured brutal criticism—media fact checkers, reporters, and political figures have shredded him—for questioning just who McCain posed with. But a closer look at the situation tells perhaps a ...

Obama Has No ISIS Strategy

Sep 16 2014 10:56am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Obama said a week ago he did not have a strategy to combat ISIS, and that now he does. He was right the first time. Oh, History The United States ignored ISIS for months. Then out of nowhere a complex situation morphed into a struggle to save the Yazidis from so-called genocide, requiring special forces and air strikes. The Yazidis disappeared from view, perhaps saved, certainly no longer needed as an emotional excuse to re-enter a war we had been told ended for Ame ...

Get Out! - The Only Sane Response to the Islamic State

Sep 14 2014 8:20pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Islamic State (ISIS) proves the law of unintended consequences. Congratulations America! We killed Christianity in the Middle East and unleashed a terror organization with far greater reach and power than Al Qaeda ever possessed. If insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results, then our foreign policy needs to have been locked away in an instit ...

Iraqi Forces Set Stage for Another Massacre of Iranian Refugees in Camp Liberty

Sep 12 2014 5:33am CDT | Source: Big Government

The Iranian regime is definitely the biggest loser of Minister Nouri Al-Maliki withdrawing his candidacy for a third term as Iraq’s Prime Minister. During eight years of divisive and sectarian rule, Maliki had proved himself to be the Iranian regime’s greatest ally in the region, dedicating his power and resources to furthering Iran’s agendas in Iraq and the region. It had been under Maliki’s tenure that the mullahs in Tehran succeeded in tightening their grip on Iraqi soil and policy. It wa ...

Obama's Last Chance to Control His Credibility

Sep 11 2014 7:52pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Barack Obama has a precious opportunity to carve out a legacy for himself and carry out a coup against the reputation of weakness, repudiation and retreat that has dogged and haunted him. The Islamic State (IS) had invited the U.S. president to a war, which has opened a window for Barack Obama to shape his own fate rather than leaving his historical political legacy in the hands of others. If he shows boldness and acts decisively f ...
