UN-Arab League representative to meet Syrian president

Oct 29 2013, 6:30am CDT | by IANS

United Nations, Oct 29 (IANS/ITAR -TASS) The UN-Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, is expected to meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during his visit to the country, UN secretary-general's deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq said.

United Nations, Oct 29 (IANS/ITAR -TASS) The UN-Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, is expected to meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during his visit to the country, UN secretary-general's deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq said.

"He (Brahimi) hopes to meet with President Assad, but at the moment we cannot say exactly when it will happen," said Farhan Haq told ITAR-TASS Monday.

According to him, the UN and Arab League emissary also intended to meet with Syrian officials and representatives of the internal opposition.

According to the UN secretary-general's spokesperson, Brahimi "will stay in Damascus a few days".

According to previous reports, the envoy arrived in Damascus due to "the need for additional contacts with the Syrian side" on issues related to the preparation of Geneva II, the second peace conference on Syria, which UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hopes to convene in November.

Brahimi in recent days has been touring the Middle East in support of the efforts to convene the Geneva II conference. The Algerian diplomat has visited Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Oman and Turkey.

He had a telephone conversation Oct 26 with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

According to the Russian foreign ministry, the parties agreed to continue the joint work to convene a peace conference on Syria, including during consultations in Geneva in the Russia-US-UN format, scheduled for Nov 5.

Russia is expected to be represented by its two Deputy Foreign Ministers, Mikhail Bogdanov and Gennady Gatilov. The American delegation will be led by Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman.

The main obstacle to setting the date for the Geneva 2 conference is the Syrian opposition's unwillingness to take part in negotiations with Damascus.

Over the weekend, 22 extremist groups, which are part of or cooperate with the Free Syrian Army, announced that they would boycott the peace conference.

Whack-A-Mole: Our Strategy for Permanent War

Sep 29 2014 8:50am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

After Barack Obama announced his high-risk military campaign in the Middle East, some commentators raised the question of why - given the decade of quagmire in Afghanistan and Iraq - was there no exit strategy? The answer by now is obvious: there will be no exit. The President says that we will defeat Islam in Iraq and Syria in three years. Active military people are less specific: "long time...extended conflict...as long as it takes..." Retired milita ...

Turkey backs ISIS to eliminate Assad

Sep 27 2014 6:04pm CDT | Source: WND

President Obama and Turkish President Erdogan WASHINGTON – There has been mounting concern over the lack of participation by Turkey – a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization – in the U.S.-led coalition to attack ISIS, but the reason for holding back has become more apparent. At first, Turkey did not take action because ISIS, which now calls itself the Islamic State, was holding hostage 49 its diplomats who were captured when ISIS blitzkrieg ...

Obama's Propagandistic UN Address

Sep 27 2014 10:29am CDT | Source: Truthout Stories

During President Barack Obama's first term, he generally was careful in making comments about world affairs – not that he was always completely honest but he was circumspect about outright lying. Over the past two years, however, he appears to have lost any such inhibitions. That's the case even when he is engaged in something as serious as addressing the United Nations General Assembly on issues of war or peace as occurred both last year and this year. In September 2013, Obama m ...

Khorasan, The Islamic State, and Finding Credible Targets in Syria

Sep 26 2014 2:43pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Contrary to the Pentagon briefings on success of the early airstrikes on the Islamic State in Syria -- “We’re going to keep the pressure on them,” said Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby -- my Arab sources indicate the attacks have produced light casualties and negligible damage.    The claims by the Kuwait New Agency (KUNA) of “at least 400 militants” killed in the first night of the attacks are wildly exaggerated and suggest deliberate misinformation, perhaps by the militants ...
