21 killed in Iraq suicide bomb attacks

Oct 30 2013, 4:28am CDT | by IANS

Baghdad, Oct 30 (IANS) At least 21 people, including senior army officers, were killed and some 46 wounded in two overnight suicide bomb attacks in central and northern Iraq, police said Wednesday.

Baghdad, Oct 30 — At least 21 people, including senior army officers, were killed and some 46 wounded in two overnight suicide bomb attacks in central and northern Iraq, police said Wednesday.

The deadlier attack occurred Tuesday evening when two suicide bombers disguised in army uniforms blew up their explosive vests at the house of a leader of the government-backed Sahwa paramilitary group in the town of Tarmiyah, some 40 km north of Baghdad, killing at least 14 people and wounding 25, a local police source told Xinhua.

The attack took place during a dinner party held by Shiekh Sa'eed Jasim, the Sahwa leader, who was receiving some army and police officers, the source said.

Among those killed were Brig. Gen. Mohammed Abdul-Sattar, Commander of Iraqi Army 22nd Brigade, and another officer. Six soldiers, three policemen and three Sahwa members, including the son of Shiekh Jasim also died, the source added.

Those wounded were 14 soldiers, seven Sahwa members and four policemen, he said.

The Sahwa militia, also known as the Awakening Council or the Sons of Iraq, consists of armed groups, including some powerful anti-US Sunni insurgent groups who turned their rifles against the Al Qaeda network after being dismayed by Al Qaeda's brutality and religious zealotry.

Also Tuesday night, a suicide bomber tried to ram his truck bomb into a police station at al-Mowla village, some 30 km west of the city of Mosul which is about 400 km north of Baghdad, but the guards fired at the truck forcing the bomber to blow it up, a police source told Xinhua.

The huge blast killed seven people, including three policemen, and wounded 21 others. It also destroyed at least 10 houses, the source said.

Stephen Colbert Stomps All Over Fox News' 'Boots On The Ground' Coverage

Sep 19 2014 4:27pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WARNING: Some shoes may have been harmed in the making of this "Colbert Report" segment. Will there or will there not be boots on the ground in Iraq? Whatever the answer, Fox News is flat-out furious about it. But as far as Stephen Colbert is concerned, there's no question at all: "Of course there won't be American boots on the ground, our shoes are all made in China." Apparently, Fox News thought it could bring a little clarity to ...

Rachel Maddow Is Repulsed At Congress For Taking A Bajillion Days Off While New War Is Launched

Sep 19 2014 7:43am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Rachel Maddow has already teared into Congress over its handling of the conflict in Iraq and Syria, but a new move by the House and Senate has pushed the MSNBC host over the edge. On Thursday, President Barack Obama made a speech praising Congress for quickly passing new legislation that will support his plan to arm and train Syrian rebels. That very same day, the House announced that members of Congress would be taking their five-week recess a week early, and would most likely not return unti ...

Thursday, President Barack Obama delivered a statement on the Senate and House voting to pass his request to arm and train Syria rebels to fight ISIS instead of using U.S. troops saying, "We can join with allies and partners to destroy ISIL without American troops fighting another ground war in the Middle East." Blast them back to Stone Age

Sep 18 2014 6:11pm CDT | Source: WND

Let me see if I get this: We, the U.S., have satellite coverage of most the world and can read a license plate from space, and the NSA has been listening to Internet and phone traffic and Internet chatting worldwide – yet somehow we don’t have a clue about where there are concentrations of these ISIS characters in Syria and Iraq, and they are continuing to grow, making them an even larger visible target? We ...

Ratings: 'Meet the Press' Falls Back to Third But Still Improves

Sep 18 2014 2:15pm CDT | Source: Big Government

With the debut of a new host and a presidential appearance in the run up to Obama's pre-emptive war in Iraq, it would have been impossible for "Meet the Press" to achieve anything other than first place two weeks ago, which it did. Chuck Todd's second week saw a return to third place behind CBS' "Face the Nation" and ABC's "This Week." The silver lining, though, is that the "Meet the Press" ratings still improved: “Meet the Press Wit ...

The Fix: Rand Paul just delivered a stem-winder against arming Syrian rebels. And many people agree with him.

Sep 18 2014 1:59pm CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) was just on the Senate floor, speaking at length in opposition to arming the Syrian rebels against the Islamic State -- even as he supports airstrikes against that same foe. It was pretty apparently a losing battle for Paul, as there won't be a separate vote on the matter. And on its surface, it would appear to be poor politics; after all, the American people are pretty gung-ho a ...

Iraq War Veteran Opens Up About Suicide In The Military

Sep 18 2014 1:44pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

An estimated 22 veterans die by suicide each day. For Iraq war veteran Jason Hansman, this staggering statistic is especially personal. In a HuffPost Live conversation on Wednesday, Hansman remembered a fellow veteran, whom he lost to suicide in 2011. "It’s very, very difficult to lose someone that you know, someone that you care about, someone that you served in Iraq with," he told host Caroline Modarressay- ...

(WASHINGTON TIMES) Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel asserted Thursday that the Obama administration is fully within its “constitutional and statutory authority” to green light the use of U.S. military force against Islamic State extremists not only in Iraq but also inside Syria.
