NSA scoops data from Yahoo, Google data centres: Report

Oct 30 2013, 9:24pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 31 (IANS) The US National Security Agency has secretly broken into the main communications links connecting Yahoo and Google data centres around the world, a US daily reported Wednesday

Washington, Oct 31 — The US National Security Agency has secretly broken into the main communications links connecting Yahoo and Google data centres around the world, a US daily reported Wednesday

According to the Washington Post cited classified documents leaked by former defense contractor Edward Snowden and interviews with knowledgeable officials to disclose the NSA operations against the Internet companies, Xinhua reported.

According to a top secret accounting dated Jan 9, 2013, the agency "sends millions of records every day from Yahoo and Google internal networks to data warehouses at the agency's Fort Meade headquarters."

In the preceding 30 days, field collectors had processed and sent back over 180 million new records including "metadata," which would indicate who sent or received emails and when, as well as text, audio and video, according to the report.

By tapping those links, the agency could collect at will from among hundreds of millions of user accounts, many of them belonging to Americans, it reported.

The NSA's main tool to exploit such data links is a project called MUSCULAR and operated jointly with the agency's British counterpart, GCHQ.

The two agencies "are copying entire data flows across fiber-optic cables that carry information between the data centers of the Silicon Valley giants," the newspaper reported.

In a statement provided to the newspaper, Google said it is "troubled by allegations of the government intercepting traffic between our data centres," and not aware of the activity.

A Yahoo spokeswoman told the daily that the company has not given access to its data centers to the NSA or to any other government agency.

Under another disclosed programme coded "PRISM," the NSA has already gathered huge volumes of online communications records by legally compelling US technology companies, including Yahoo and Google. The program is authorized under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and overseen by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

The Biggest Single Trigger of Jihadism Has Been our Adherence to ‘Multiculturalism’

Aug 24 2014 4:17am CDT | Source: Big Government

The sadistic beheading of the American journalist James Foley by an ISIL killer apparently from Britain, just a few days ago, is the first such killing of an American by a jihadist with a British passport.  But it is the second ritual beheading carried out by British Islamists (the head of a British soldier, Drummer Lee Rigby, was hacked from his body by two of them in Woolwich, London last year in full public view). Jihadists from Britain are at the forefront o ...

Aug 22 2014 8:56am CDT | Source: Big Government

It took her more than nine years of working in the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security, but Yasmina Haifi finally uncovered the secret truth about the Islamic State: It isn't Islamic at all. Actually, it's a Jewish plot. Yes, really: that terrorist group formerly known as ISIS, responsible for acts of genocide in Iraq, for the beheading of American journalist James Foley, and for the murder of countless women and children in their war to establish a new Islamic Caliphate, Ha ...

Aug 21 2014 10:09am CDT | Source: WND

Did a U.S. defense contractor help create the next generation of spyware weapons?

Aug 16 2014 8:50am CDT | Source: Big Government

The Washington Post relates a fascinating little cloak-and-dagger story that ends with a heck of a punchline: a U.S. defense contractor was apparently working with the dirtbags who create spyware and virus programs to develop new tools for spying on people, potentially both foreign and domestic. CloudShield Technologies, a California defense contractor, dispatched a senior engineer to Munich in the early fall of 2009. His instructio ...
