NSA scoops data from Yahoo, Google data centres: Report

Oct 30 2013, 9:24pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 31 (IANS) The US National Security Agency has secretly broken into the main communications links connecting Yahoo and Google data centres around the world, a US daily reported Wednesday

Washington, Oct 31 — The US National Security Agency has secretly broken into the main communications links connecting Yahoo and Google data centres around the world, a US daily reported Wednesday

According to the Washington Post cited classified documents leaked by former defense contractor Edward Snowden and interviews with knowledgeable officials to disclose the NSA operations against the Internet companies, Xinhua reported.

According to a top secret accounting dated Jan 9, 2013, the agency "sends millions of records every day from Yahoo and Google internal networks to data warehouses at the agency's Fort Meade headquarters."

In the preceding 30 days, field collectors had processed and sent back over 180 million new records including "metadata," which would indicate who sent or received emails and when, as well as text, audio and video, according to the report.

By tapping those links, the agency could collect at will from among hundreds of millions of user accounts, many of them belonging to Americans, it reported.

The NSA's main tool to exploit such data links is a project called MUSCULAR and operated jointly with the agency's British counterpart, GCHQ.

The two agencies "are copying entire data flows across fiber-optic cables that carry information between the data centers of the Silicon Valley giants," the newspaper reported.

In a statement provided to the newspaper, Google said it is "troubled by allegations of the government intercepting traffic between our data centres," and not aware of the activity.

A Yahoo spokeswoman told the daily that the company has not given access to its data centers to the NSA or to any other government agency.

Under another disclosed programme coded "PRISM," the NSA has already gathered huge volumes of online communications records by legally compelling US technology companies, including Yahoo and Google. The program is authorized under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and overseen by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

Imagine the kind of system needed just to vet that many people for access to our secret world (to the tune of billions of dollars). We’re talking he ...

When NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden reached out to Laura Poitras in January 2013, the documentary filmmaker knew just what to do: make a documentary. She had recently won a MacArthur genius grant in 2012 and was already several years into making a film about surveillance in the post-9/11 era when Snowden reached out to her using the name "Citizen Four." When she and Glenn Greenwald flew to Hong Kong in June 2013, she brought her camera with her. The result is a docu ...

Silicon Valley Tech Giants Say US Spying May Bust-Up the Internet

Oct 9 2014 9:43pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Since there is nothing more self-righteous than an addict who just got out of rehab, it was not surprising that Microsoft’s General Counsel Brad Smith at a Silicon Valley panel discussion on NSA surveillance would say, “You own your data. And the government needs to start respecting that.”  Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and Apple have made big bucks selling other people's Internet data to marketers and the feder ...
