NSA scoops data from Yahoo, Google data centres: Report

Oct 30 2013, 9:24pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 31 (IANS) The US National Security Agency has secretly broken into the main communications links connecting Yahoo and Google data centres around the world, a US daily reported Wednesday

Washington, Oct 31 — The US National Security Agency has secretly broken into the main communications links connecting Yahoo and Google data centres around the world, a US daily reported Wednesday

According to the Washington Post cited classified documents leaked by former defense contractor Edward Snowden and interviews with knowledgeable officials to disclose the NSA operations against the Internet companies, Xinhua reported.

According to a top secret accounting dated Jan 9, 2013, the agency "sends millions of records every day from Yahoo and Google internal networks to data warehouses at the agency's Fort Meade headquarters."

In the preceding 30 days, field collectors had processed and sent back over 180 million new records including "metadata," which would indicate who sent or received emails and when, as well as text, audio and video, according to the report.

By tapping those links, the agency could collect at will from among hundreds of millions of user accounts, many of them belonging to Americans, it reported.

The NSA's main tool to exploit such data links is a project called MUSCULAR and operated jointly with the agency's British counterpart, GCHQ.

The two agencies "are copying entire data flows across fiber-optic cables that carry information between the data centers of the Silicon Valley giants," the newspaper reported.

In a statement provided to the newspaper, Google said it is "troubled by allegations of the government intercepting traffic between our data centres," and not aware of the activity.

A Yahoo spokeswoman told the daily that the company has not given access to its data centers to the NSA or to any other government agency.

Under another disclosed programme coded "PRISM," the NSA has already gathered huge volumes of online communications records by legally compelling US technology companies, including Yahoo and Google. The program is authorized under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and overseen by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

As all of us living through this increasingly dire period of American history know, environmenta ...

NSA Reform Bill Splits Reformers

James Clapper became public enemy number one for civil liberties groups in 2013 when Edward Snowden's leaks revealed that he lied to Congress about the National Security Agency's domestic surveillance. One year later, the embattled director of national intelligence is the unlikely bedfellow of the American Civil Liberties Union in backing an NSA reform bill that has divided civil liberties groups. The differing views on the bil ...

Open-Ended Lies

Sep 16 2014 1:56pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Today, the United States moves forward with plans to attack ISIS, alongside the help of unlikely allies. Our government does so aware of the fact that many, if not most Americans disapprove. The American population is fearful of ISIS. Clearly, our government is too. But our fears may stem from different places. And our solutions may vary drastically, too. When there's such a great difference between what the American population thinks and wants ...

Have they cut it off yet? The penis attached to traitorous transsexual Chelsea Manning, I mean. How else to explain the level of feverish disturbance necessary for the former Private Bradley to pen an op-ed saying we should "let ISIS succeed" in its mission to destroy half the Middle East, murdering, raping and torturing anyone in its way.  There's no doubt that dealing with ISIS, the Islamic State or whatever those barbarian nutca ...

The video is part of a new documentary called "CITIZENFOUR," by Laura Poitras, one of the journalists who met Snowden on that fateful day in 2013. On Tuesday, the New Yo ...
