Obama aides considered dumping Biden for Hillary Clinton: Report

Oct 31 2013, 11:54pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Nov 1 (IANS) US President Barack Obama's top aides secretly considered replacing Vice President Joe Biden with Hillary Clinton on the 2012 ticket when Obama's re-election outlook appeared uncertain, according to the New York Times.

Washington, Nov 1 — US President Barack Obama's top aides secretly considered replacing Vice President Joe Biden with Hillary Clinton on the 2012 ticket when Obama's re-election outlook appeared uncertain, according to the New York Times.

The bombshell revelation is provided by journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, in their new book, "Double Down,"

giving an account of the 2012 US presidential race, the influential US daily reported.

However, the aides concluded that despite Clinton's popularity, the move would not offer a significant enough political boost to Obama to justify such a radical move, the book obtained by the Times "from people in the publishing industry" suggested.

The long rumoured dea of replacing Biden with Clinton was pushed by then chief of staff William M. Daley, despite the close personal rapport Daley had developed with Biden, a fellow Irish Catholic and veteran of Washington politics, it said.

"When the research came back near the end of the year, it suggested that adding Clinton to the ticket wouldn't materially improve Obama's odds," the authors are quoted as saying in their sequel to "Game Change," which chronicled the 2008 campaign.

"Biden had dodged a bullet he never saw coming - and never would know anything about, if the Obamans could keep a secret."

Daley acknowledged to the Times Thursday that he had wanted to research what the move would have meant for Obama, whose popularity, in the fall of 2011, was at its lowest in his presidency to date. He called it simply "due diligence."

The book also suggests that "even after Obama named Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, seemingly binding the wounds from their hard-fought 2008 primary campaign, he still could barely endure spending much time with the often-exhausting Bill Clinton."

Obama rarely contacted his Democratic predecessor in the first years after taking office, but after the midterm losses for his party, the incumbent and his inner circle realized that they needed the still-popular Clinton, it said.

But as the relationship between Obama and Clinton thawed during the campaign, the incumbent's bond with his vice president was tested, the Times said.

'Bill Clinton would have fired Hillary'

Sep 1 2014 3:08pm CDT | Source: WND

DALLAS – Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., certainly seems to have no doubt Hillary Clinton will run for president, after delivering a number of pre-emptive broadsides on her fitness to hold the highest office in the land. Speaking to the “Defending the American Dream Summit” sponsored by Americans for Prosperity over the weekend, Paul zeroed in on the one incident alone he believes disqualifies her: Benghazi. Paul, who is widely considered to be preparing his own run for the White Ho ...

Reid's Grip On Power Hangs On Democratic Aristocracy

Sep 1 2014 11:20am CDT | Source: Big Government

Control of the US Senate largely hinges on the outcome of election in 12 states. In half of these contests, the Democrat candidate is the scion of rich political legacies. In their own way, these contests will test the proposition that America is a land without an aristocracy. Obama's "Dreams of My Father" may be less a memoir than a political blueprint.   For many Democrat candidates this year, their last ...

LITTLE ROCK — While Bill and Hillary Clinton were vacationing in August at their rented mansion on a scenic bluff in the tony Hamptons, they read a flurry of e-mail updates from an earlier life. At 7:41 one Monday morning, the Clintons received word that the elderly mother of longtime Little Rock radio and television personality Craig O’Neill had pas ...

Hillary Got It Right on Ferguson and Race

Aug 31 2014 7:22pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Hillary Clinton was pilloried and battered for days on end for not uttering a peep about the Michael Brown slaying, the Ferguson disorders, and most importantly race. Clinton took heat on this for the simple reason that she almost certainly will run for president and likely win. It would look pretty peculiar for a presidential candidate, especially a Democratic presidential candidate, and likely winner not to say anything about ...

Why isn't Obama afraid?

Aug 31 2014 3:36pm CDT | Source: WND

Is there nothing that horrifies the president? Not even brutally cutting off the head of an American journalist in front of a camera? How about the kidnapping of hundreds of male and female school children, and doing terrible things to them? Think the worst, and it’s worse than that. For many, death is a form of rescue. What about attacking Christian churches, killing the priests and burning the buildings and the people in them to the ground? Is there nothing that terrorists do and threaten ag ...

Islamist militia seizes US embassy in Libya

Aug 31 2014 2:30pm CDT | Source: Big Government

If Barack Obama's hideous foreign policy debacles were a stage play, this is the point where Hillary Clinton would be lowered on wires to fly around the stage shrieking "WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?"  Tripoli has fallen to Islamists, prompting Egypt and the United Arab Emirates to conduct bombing runs against the Muslim Brotherhood without even bothering to inform former U.S. President Barack Obama (who is, once again, playing golf while the world bur ...

Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, writing for the San Francisco Chronicle, notes that presumptive 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton visited the San Francisco area with her aides last week to hit up tech companies for cash and technical advice for the 2016 election.  Brown asserts that Clinton also wants to cement her connections with the companies so no other presidential contender in her p ...

Romney Blast Hillary and Obama for "Bend Over Backward" Appeasement

Aug 31 2014 12:54pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Mitt Romney appeared on WNYM's "The Cats Round Table" with John Catsimatidis today and had some harsh words for both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama when it came to foreign policy. "Hillary Clinton and her boss Barack Obama were extraordinarily naive and misguided in describing a 'reset' with Russia—her smiling ear-to-ear with a big red button that says 'reset' on it, giving it to the Russian Foreign Minister. They had to be laughing as ...

Rand Paul: If Hillary Had Worked for Bill, She'd Have Probably Been Fired

Aug 30 2014 1:07pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Friday and the Americans for Prosperity “Defending the Dream” summit, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) went on the offensive against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is said to be the frontrunner for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination. Paul took aim at her tenure as the nation’s chief diplomat and particularly hammered her on the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. According to Paul, that disqualified her to be commander-in-chief and he added t ...
