Indian-American business group endorses New Jersey governor

Nov 1 2013, 12:06am CDT | by IANS

New Jersey, Nov 1 (IANS) The Indian Business Association of New jersey, home to a large Indian-American community, has endorsed Republican Governor Chris Christie, who is running for re-election to a second and final term in office.

New Jersey, Nov 1 — The Indian Business Association of New jersey, home to a large Indian-American community, has endorsed Republican Governor Chris Christie, who is running for re-election to a second and final term in office.

Christie, who will face Democratic nominee Barbara Buono and six others in the Nov 5 election, won IBA's endorsement during a stop on his statewide campaign tour Thursday "in the heart of New Jersey's burgeoning Indian-American community," according to NJ.com.

IBA which represents "the countless Indian shops and restaurants that populate the Middlesex County's sprawling Woodbridge and Edison corridor", had also endorsed Christie when he was elected in 2009, the website reported.

The group's chairman Chandrakant Patel called the governor a friend of New Jersey's nearly 292,000 Indian-American residents. "He always listens to us," he said. "He tries to solve our problems."

Christie, wife Mary Pat and son Andrew - a student at Princeton - greeted dozens of Indian-American supporters at Chowpatty, one of the many Indian restaurants on the stretch of Oak Tree that runs through the Iselin section of Woodbridge, NJ.com said.

The largest swath of New Jersey's Indian-American community lives in the area: Of the 200,000 people who reside in Edison and Woodbridge, 50,000 are Indian-American, according to 2010 census numbers, the website said.

Christie's visit came a day after his Democratic challenger Buono appeared in Edison to introduce the first-ever South Asian-American caucus to the state Democratic Party, designed to give voice to the New Jersey's Indian-Americans.

Democratic state assemblyman Upendra Chivukula, according to NJ.com, called the caucus "a historic milestone in the political evolution of the South-Asian community and a victory for the state's Democratic Party."

Polls show Christie leading Buono by more than 20 percentage points.

We Need Law and Order, Not Sympathy for Rioters

Aug 19 2014 7:06pm CDT | Source: Big Government

After rioting broke out in the Watts section of Los Angeles in August 1965, concerned Republicans persuaded Ronald Reagan to run for governor on a stern “law and order” platform. The former movie star did exactly that, trouncing California Gov. Pat Brown by 15 percentage points, the biggest prize among the eight governorships that the GOP picked up in 1966. And the Gipper was on his way to the White House. We face a similar mom ...

Hillary Clinton Is Everywhere, But Still Nowhere To Be Found On Ferguson

Aug 19 2014 12:22pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton isn't exactly hiding from the public eye as she plans a trip to Iowa, furthering speculation about whether and when she'll announce plans to seek the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination. Yet, Clinton hasn't said a word about protests in Ferguson, Missouri, following the Aug. 9 shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, by a police officer. Clinton's silence has prov ...

Harry Enten: "It's a tantalizing theory for the right and a fun story for the media. But the data suggests that the senator from Kentucky has his work cut out for him. So far, Paul isn't doing much better among young voters than the Republican nominee in 2012, Mitt Romney, or than Chris Christie, the New Jersey governor, is currently d ...

When Backing Pro-Gay GOPers Is Actually Something Nefarious

Aug 19 2014 10:30am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Yesterday there was a very puffy piece in USA Today about Paul Singer, the Republican hedge-fund billionaire who supports same-sex marriage (his son is gay) and founded a super PAC that has financially backed GOP politicians who voted for gay marriage in several states that passed marriage equality. The headline: "GOP Super PAC Plans Gay-Rights Push This Fall." Now, judging from that headline, if it were earlier in the primary season, I would have th ...

Chris Christie Defends Cops: 'Not Right' to Generalize Race Problem

Aug 18 2014 4:09pm CDT | Source: Big Government

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie pushed back against the idea that police officers had a problem with race when executing their duties as law enforcement officials. During a visit to Ashbury, Christie was asked about the uproar in Ferguson, Missouri, over the shooting death of an African-American teenager by a police officer. “Do you think there’s a problem just in general in this country with the way police handle and treat young blac ...

Sharpton: We Are Close to 'Sickening Police State'

Aug 18 2014 12:03pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Monday on MSNBC's "NewsNation with Tamron Hall," Al Sharpton said it's "sickening" that the authorities response to protests and riots in Ferguson is to turn the St. Louis suburb into a "police state." Sharpton said, "The definition of a police state is don't question me. Whether it's Staten Island, whether it's L.A., whether it's Ferguson, we are close to where police are saying 'whatev ...

Book Tour Costs Hillary Big Leads Over Potential GOP Rivals

Aug 14 2014 12:09pm CDT | Source: Big Government

After a book tour and summer season of gaffes, missteps and backtracks during her clumsy book tour, a new poll shows that Hillary Clinton's once-insurmountable lead over her potential GOP 2016 presidential contenders has slipped considerably. The former Secretary of State is also below 50% for the first time. Currently, according to a new McClatchy-Marist poll, Clinton's lead with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is 47% to 41%. That's down, though, from a 53% to 42% ...

Poll: Hillary's Numbers Down vs. GOP Challengers

Aug 14 2014 12:03pm CDT | Source: Big Government

It seems the more people see of Hillary Clinton the less they like her. A new McClatchy-Marist poll finds Clinton has slipped below 50 percent support in hypothetical match-ups with Republican challengers. Asked who they would vote for if the 2016 election were held today, respondents gave Clinton 48 percent support versus all three top GOP contenders: Gov. Chris Christie (41%), Gov. Jeb Bush (41%) and Sen. Rand Paul ( ...
