Indian-American business group endorses New Jersey governor

Nov 1 2013, 12:06am CDT | by IANS

New Jersey, Nov 1 (IANS) The Indian Business Association of New jersey, home to a large Indian-American community, has endorsed Republican Governor Chris Christie, who is running for re-election to a second and final term in office.

New Jersey, Nov 1 — The Indian Business Association of New jersey, home to a large Indian-American community, has endorsed Republican Governor Chris Christie, who is running for re-election to a second and final term in office.

Christie, who will face Democratic nominee Barbara Buono and six others in the Nov 5 election, won IBA's endorsement during a stop on his statewide campaign tour Thursday "in the heart of New Jersey's burgeoning Indian-American community," according to NJ.com.

IBA which represents "the countless Indian shops and restaurants that populate the Middlesex County's sprawling Woodbridge and Edison corridor", had also endorsed Christie when he was elected in 2009, the website reported.

The group's chairman Chandrakant Patel called the governor a friend of New Jersey's nearly 292,000 Indian-American residents. "He always listens to us," he said. "He tries to solve our problems."

Christie, wife Mary Pat and son Andrew - a student at Princeton - greeted dozens of Indian-American supporters at Chowpatty, one of the many Indian restaurants on the stretch of Oak Tree that runs through the Iselin section of Woodbridge, NJ.com said.

The largest swath of New Jersey's Indian-American community lives in the area: Of the 200,000 people who reside in Edison and Woodbridge, 50,000 are Indian-American, according to 2010 census numbers, the website said.

Christie's visit came a day after his Democratic challenger Buono appeared in Edison to introduce the first-ever South Asian-American caucus to the state Democratic Party, designed to give voice to the New Jersey's Indian-Americans.

Democratic state assemblyman Upendra Chivukula, according to NJ.com, called the caucus "a historic milestone in the political evolution of the South-Asian community and a victory for the state's Democratic Party."

Polls show Christie leading Buono by more than 20 percentage points.

Megyn Kelly On 'Saturday Night Live' Parody Of Herself: 'Pretty Good,' Except For The Hair

Nov 4 2014 10:50am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Seeing yourself parodied on "Saturday Night Live" is every bit as surreal as you'd expect. At least, that's judging by Megyn Kelly's reaction after "SNL" actress Cecily Strong impersonated the Fox TV host in the show's opening segment last week. Relative to the other characters in the sketch, pseudo-Kelly escaped relatively unscathed. The segment saved its sharpest barbs for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Kaci Hickox, the nurse authoritie ...

A Voter's Guide to the Drug War

Nov 3 2014 3:45pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Whatever else Tuesday may bring, it looks poised to be a banner day for those of us who have long sought to end America's failed war on drugs. And if the stars and voter participation align, it may indeed prove a tipping point in the long fight toward a possible landslide for Drug War Reform. Citizens across the country will vote Tuesday on more initiatives to reform drug control policy than at any other time in American history. This is a coup in itself, of course, reflecting ho ...

Ebola Is Good

Nov 3 2014 2:28pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Ebola virus is the best thing to happen to American politicians in years. Ebola has done what neither war, climate change, nor economic meltdown have accomplished. It has united our politicians in action because Ebola is bad. Ebola threatens America. It came dangerously close to infecting a King Charles Spaniel in Texas. Like that nerd in grade school who always raises his hand, no one likes the Ebola virus. Our political leaders have ...
