US to continue support Egypt's regime: Kerry

Nov 3 2013, 5:54pm CST | by IANS

Cairo, Nov 4 (IANS) US Secretary of State John Kerry, during his first visit to Egypt since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi, confirmed Sunday that his country would continue its cooperation with Egypt's interim government.

Cairo, Nov 4 — US Secretary of State John Kerry, during his first visit to Egypt since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi, confirmed Sunday that his country would continue its cooperation with Egypt's interim government.

Kerry described Egypt as a "vital partner" at a joint press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy, held directly after their meeting. He emphasised that the US is committed to working with the interim government and supporting Egyptians, Xinhua reported.

Relations between the two countries have been deteriorating since the ouster of Morsi and they further soured Oct 9 when the US suspended its annual military assistance of $1.3 billion to its Middle East ally.

Fahmy had previously said in an interview that there was "unrest" between Egypt and the US after the aid suspension, saying the strain could affect the whole Middle East.

Kerry attempted to soften the diplomatic tone by stressing that US-Egypt ties should not be "defined by assistance".

He added that the suspension of aid, which came after the military toppled the country's first democratically-elected president July 3, was not a punishment but a reflection of US foreign policy.

"(US) President Barack Obama has worked very hard to be able to make sure that (the suspension of aid) will not disrupt the US relations with Egypt," Kerry said, noting that the topic was mentioned "very briefly" during their meeting.

Commenting on the difficulties facing Egypt, Kerry urged that the political transition be democratic and transparent. "A democratically re-elected government should be brought about by free, fair and inclusive elections," Kerry said.

"We condemn the acts of violence against churches, against worshippers and that on security forces in the Sinai Peninsula," he added, denouncing the rise in attacks against religious minorities and police institutions.

He further said the US plans to work with the Egyptian government and the military to fight against terrorism and to restore security in Sinai.

Kerry reportedly held talks later with other top officials including interim President Adly Mansour, Military Chief General Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi and other leaders.

Egypt is the first leg of Kerry's nine-day trip to the Middle East, north Africa, and Europe.

The visit was on the eve of the trial of Morsi and 14 other senior Islamist leaders. They are facing charges of inciting violence and killing protesters. The trial could be Morsi's first public appearance since his downfall.

Morsi, who hails from the Islamist organisation the Muslim Brotherhood, was ousted following massive nationwide protests against his one-year rule. He was arrested by the military and has been held in an undisclosed location.

Kerry's last visit to Egypt was in March when he urged Morsi's administration and other political parties to compromise and restore national unity, political stability and economic reforms in the Arab world's most populous nation.

According to the government's transitional roadmap, Egypt will hold parliamentary and presidential elections at the beginning of next year and early next summer, respectively.

On Election Night, Pack an Umbrella

Nov 4 2014 2:02pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

I spent the last 24 hours of the last midterm elections clutching a pocket folder with two sets of index cards inside. On one set was printed a victory speech no one outside our campaign thought we were going to need. On the other was a concession speech I hadn't even shown the guy who might have to deliver it that night, like it was his own eulogy. Four years ago I was writing speeches for Harry Reid of Nevada, the Senate Majority Leader and the Rep ...

Two States to Watch

Nov 4 2014 8:56am CST | Source: Taegan Goddard's Political Wire

First Read: “We’ll have a good idea early in the evening of how Election Night is going to break. The two states to watch — North Carolina (where final polling places close at 7:30 am ET) and New Hampshire (where they close at 8:00 pm ET). Every scenario of Democrats holding on to the Senate assumes they win those two states. If we’re able to put those two in the Democratic column, then we’re going to have to wait for Alaska, especially if Georgia goes to a runoff. But if Republicans win one o ...

What a Republican Senate Would Mean for World Politics

Nov 4 2014 7:54am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

On Tuesday, when tens of millions of US voters go to the polls, they are very likely to deliver a US Senate majority to the Republican Party. Six years into the administration of Democratic President Barack Obama and four years after the midterm elections that delivered control of the US House of Representatives to the Republicans and conservative Speaker John Boehner, most polls and poll aggregate forecasts give the Republicans anywhere from a strong (70 percen ...

How You Can Help Save the Senate

Nov 3 2014 1:56pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The battle for the Senate has been a cliffhanger for months. Races in at least ten states that will decide the balance of power have remained too close to call, despite corporate pundits' haste to forecast a GOP victory. Now, on the eve of Election Day, it's tempting to throw up your hands, sit back and wait for the returns to come in. That's exactly what Republicans are hoping we'll ...

MPs Should Get Some Business Experience before Lecturing Us Against Exiting the EU

Nov 3 2014 9:23am CST | Source: Big Government

I'm getting quite tired of listening to politicians, and indeed some friends, who have never set up a business, or run a business, tell me about recklessness of pulling out of the European Union. Now, as of yet, I don't have kids, although I am a proud uncle. But based on the fact that I know so little about parenting, I wouldn't march blasé into broadcasting studios lecturing parents on where to shop, or on the process of applying for nursery vouchers ...

Last-minute polling finds the Republicans on track for a Senate victory tomorrow. Early voting, though, suggests it could be close. And what kind of voters are still undecided? This is HuffPollster for Monday, November 3, 2014. A GOP SENATE LOOKS MORE LIKELY - With less than 24 hours remaining before polls open nationwide, a final round of polls largely confirms previous findings in the much-watched battle for control of the U.S. Senat ...
