Lebanon to join Geneva-II, Syrian opposition undecided

Nov 4 2013, 3:32am CST | by IANS

Beirut/Cairo, Nov 4 (IANS) Lebanon has confirmed it would join the Geneva II-preparatory meeting on the Syrian crisis, while the Syrian opposition coalition said it was still to decide.

Beirut/Cairo, Nov 4 — Lebanon has confirmed it would join the Geneva II-preparatory meeting on the Syrian crisis, while the Syrian opposition coalition said it was still to decide.

Lebanon's Foreign Affairs Minister Adnan Mansour Sunday confirmed Lebanon would accept an invitation to the conference of domestic and international parties aimed at resolving the Syrian conflict, Xinhua reported.

Mansour and Najla Riachi Assaker, Lebanon's permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, would attend the meeting.

Mansour's announcement came two days after UN-Arab League envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi and Lebanese President Michel Suleiman met in Beirut to discuss the proposed conference.

Brahimi said after the meeting that Lebanese officials were "in favour of being invited" and added that Lebanon has borne significant burdens that fell on its shoulders as a result of the situation in Syria.

While Lebanon said yes to the conference, the deeply fractured opposition of the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) is split on the issue.

The coalition gas disagreed over the conditions for attending the conference and has demanded that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad step down right away and not take part in a negotiated solution for the country's future.

The Arab League has urged the opposition to participate in the meeting and form a delegation as soon as possible.

Talks in Geneva could not "go forward without the opposition", and "the participation of the opposition is essential, necessary and important", Brahimi said.

SNC chief Ahmed Al-Jarba said the opposition would not enter the Geneva talks unless there was a successful transfer of power in Syria within a specific timeframe.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said in Cairo that the US and its allies might differ over "tactics" on the Syrian conflict but they shared the goal of a handover of power.

The long-awaited Geneva II conference on Syria is aimed at bringing the government and the opposition to the negotiation table by the end of this month to hammer out a political solution to the country's prolonged conflict.

Israelis and Palestinians at Harvard: Part 5 of 9

Aug 5 2014 4:34pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Right of Return The right of return is a sore issue with Palestinians. Several Israelis have pointed out to me the historical right to their ancestral homeland. But at the same time, Palestinians have told me that it doesn't make sense that Jews should have a right of return from centuries ago, but Palestinians aren't afforded the same right from the last 100 years. Moreover, as one Palestinian put it, Israel has "been denying for years the Palestinian ...

Israel Kept Hezbollah out of the War

Aug 4 2014 8:05am CDT | Source: Big Government

To borrow a phrase from Sherlock Holmes: the "dog that didn't bark" in the Gaza conflict (thus far, anyway) was Hezbollah. The Iranian-backed Lebanese Shiite militia has rockets and tunnels that equal or surpass the Hamas arsenal, and in 2006 was able to open a second front after Israel attacked Gaza in response to the kidnapping of Cpl. Gilad Shalit. But aside from a few bombastic press statement, Hezbollah stayed out of this latest round. The main reason, no doubt, is that ...

The Israeli-Palestinian War: Which Channel to Watch?

Jul 21 2014 5:41pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

We have all seen the deaths in Gaza. We are appalled. Terrible violence. We see it. There is outrage. Rightly so, we want it stopped. And when it stops? We change the channel and go on to find something else to watch... that drama is over as far as we are concerned. The details of what the real issues are don't hold our attention. How to end the real crisis and bring about a resolution just isn't compelling TV. The plight of the Palestinians is a long and compl ...

Monkey Cage: Government data exaggerate the increase in terrorist attacks

Jul 21 2014 9:02am CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

With the recent spikes in terrorism in Syria, Lebanon and now Iraq, it is important to ask: Is the threat of terrorism around the world greater today than at the height of the Iraq war?  The New York Times, CNN, Reuters and other news media outlets have used government-sponsored data sets that paint a scary picture of world events, claiming that the number of radical terrorist attacks in 2013 exceeded those in any previous period. If true, the worl ...
