17 militants killed in Afghanistan, 10 surrender (Roundup)

Nov 4 2013, 9:04am CST | by IANS

Kabul, Nov 4 (IANS) Seventeen Taliban militants have been killed while 10 others have surrendered in two days of counter-insurgency operations in conflict-ridden Afghanistan, officials said Monday.

Kabul, Nov 4 — Seventeen Taliban militants have been killed while 10 others have surrendered in two days of counter-insurgency operations in conflict-ridden Afghanistan, officials said Monday.

"Personnel of national police in conjunction with the national army and the NATO-led troops have killed 17 Taliban rebels during series of operations in Kandahar, Paktika, Paktiya, Farah and Nimroz provinces over the past 24 hours," Xinhua reported citing a statement issued by the country's interior ministry Monday.

In a related development, according to government sources, 10 Taliban fighters gave up fighting and resumed normal life in Sarobi district, 60 km east of the capital city Kabul over the period.

"A 10-member armed militant group who were active against government in parts of Sarobi district in the past, had laid down arms and joined the peace process," the National Directorate of Security (NDS) or the country's intelligence agency said in a statement released here Monday.

Without mentioning the exact date of their surrender, the statement said that with the joining of these former militants in the peace process the security situation will be further improved in and around Sarobi.

According to government officials, more than 3,500 militants have joined the government-backed peace process over the past year, a claim rejected by the Taliban as baseless.

Meanwhile, a mine planted by anti-government militants, presumably by Taliban militants struck a vehicle of the election commission Sunday in Ghor province with Cheghcheran as its capital, 360 km west of Kabul, injuring three workers of the election body.

The Taliban on its website claimed having killed dozens of Afghan security personnel over the past two days throughout the conflict-hit country. It is difficult to verify the claims.

Afghan poppy cultivation at 'all-time high'

Oct 21 2014 10:13am CDT | Source: WND

(WASHINGTON FREE BEACON) Cultivation of the illegal poppy plant in Afghanistan has reached an “all time high” following a $7.6 billion counternarcotics campaign paid for by the United States, according to government oversight investigators. Despite the spending to combat growth of the poppy plant, which is used to make drugs such as opium and heroin, cultivation has reached an “all time high,” especially in places once declared “poppy free,” ...

Ebola Czar: Et Tu Al Hunt?

Oct 19 2014 2:21pm CDT | Source: Big Government

When Obama has lost liberal Al Hunt with his choice of Ron Klain for Ebola czar ... well, you get the picture. I've know Ron Klain for years, respecting him as a smart operative who understands the nexus of politics and policy. His selection yesterday by President Barack Obama as the "Ebola czar" is a bad choice that will not stop the Democrats' political problems on this issue. While conservatives may not usually have much in common with the thinking of Al Hunt, it ...

Why Military Veterans are Uniquely Primed for Climate Action

Oct 8 2014 9:42am CDT | Source: Environmental Defense Fund

By Stephanie KlineMost veterans’ climate action advocacy is not motivated only by traditional environmental issues, but also by lives lost during fuel transports amid increasing global conflicts. My advocacy is motivated by both, and as a veteran, I'm inspired by increased opportunities to promote clean energy policies that support energy security, resiliency, and military readiness. Climate change affects us in multiple ways, not the least of which is geopolitical ...

Krauthammer: Panetta Interviews 'Utterly Devastating' to Obama

Oct 7 2014 11:44pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Columnist Charles Krauthammer argued that remarks made by former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in multiple interviews were “utterly devastating” to President Obama on Tuesday’s broadcast of “The O’Reilly Factor” on the Fox News Channel. “What he [Panetta] said, the content of what he said, even though the tone was measured and restrained, was utterly devastating. He was basically saying this president cannot lead. He is indecisive and he is weak” Krautha ...

Virtual Numbers and the Young Billionaires

Oct 7 2014 3:51pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

One of the characteristics of money is that it is virtual and almost unfathomable. For the wealthiest and the poorest there is never enough. For the wise, money becomes a tool, an expression of intention. For the fool, it becomes the only goal, a never satisfying end in itself that takes over. Consider the unfathomable trillions we have spent on war in the last decade while contemplating the latest crop of billionaire ...
