UN, India push for presidential re-vote in Maldives

Nov 6 2013, 1:16pm CST | by IANS

Male, Nov 7 (IANS) A senior UN official began a two-day mission to the Maldives Wednesday along with Indian diplomats to push for free and fair presidential elections.

Male, Nov 7 — A senior UN official began a two-day mission to the Maldives Wednesday along with Indian diplomats to push for free and fair presidential elections.

The visit by Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs Oscar Fernandez-Taranco followed a call by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the Maldives to hold a re-run as soon as possible so that a new president can be sworn in before the constitutional deadline of Nov 11, Xinhua reported.

The Supreme Court of Maldives had annulled the first round of presidential elections held Sep 7 citing irregularities and ordered fresh polls under a comprehensive guideline.

The Elections Commission had announced the re-vote Oct 19 but it was blocked at the last minute by police.

The commission has now slated Saturday for the third attempt at electing a new president.

"Taranco will stress the importance of holding the elections as planned and ensuring a constitutional path forward, encouraging Maldivian political leaders and government officials to fulfill their responsibilities toward the democratic process," UN spokesperson Farhan Haq said.

India dispatched a team of senior diplomats to Male Tuesday, hoping to put pressure on the Maldivian government to hold the next round of presidential election as scheduled and ensure that it's free and fair.

The latest visit, diplomatic sources say, is to make sure that free and fair elections are held as scheduled. The team will be led by a joint secretary in the ministry of external affairs.

If Maldives does not elect a president by Nov 11 the speaker of parliament will take over and oversee the transition of power.

Protect the Future of Peacekeeping

Nov 4 2014 8:38am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

On a Friday in early October -- amid a flood of news on ISIL and an escalating Ebola crisis -- it might have been easy to miss this headline: Nine United Nations Peacekeepers were ambushed and killed by gunmen in Mali. Less than a week later, another Peacekeeper in Mali was killed in a rocket attack. However, much as these tragedies may seem part of peacekeeping's inherent risks, they were more than just a couple stories ...

UN Climate Change Report Delivers Stark Warnings

Nov 2 2014 6:35am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Climate change is happening, it's almost entirely man's fault and limiting its impacts may require reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero this century, the U.N.'s panel on climate science said Sunday. The fourth and final volume of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's giant climate assessment didn't offer any surprises, nor was it expected to since i ...

We Must Not Even Think of Accusing Leonardo DiCaprio of Hypocrisy

Nov 1 2014 3:45pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Friday’s crash of the Virgin Galactic space-plane in California was, of course, a tragedy: One test-pilot was killed, and another seriously injured.  But there is, at least, a silver lining: There’s no need to worry about another possible issue concerning Richard Branson’s spaceflight venture—namely, that all those internal-combustion-powered flights would contribute to the dread danger of climate change.   Inde ...

U.N. chief 'shocked and alarmed' by Gaza tunnels

Oct 24 2014 8:47pm CDT | Source: WND

(Israel Hayom) U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited southern Israel and the Gaza Strip on Tuesday and told both sides what they wanted to hear. After meeting in Gaza with members of the Palestinian unity government, Ban said, “I am here with a very heavy heart. The destruction which I have seen coming here is beyond description. This is much more serious destruction than I saw in 2009 immediately after the violence at that time.” Ban vowed to so ...
