1.7 mln Philippine children affected by typhoon

Nov 9 2013, 10:02pm CST | by IANS

United Nations, Nov 10 (IANS) The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) said here Saturday that up to 1.7 million Philippine children could be affected by super typhoon Haiyan, which tore through the country over the last 48 hours.

United Nations, Nov 10 — The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) said here Saturday that up to 1.7 million Philippine children could be affected by super typhoon Haiyan, which tore through the country over the last 48 hours.

"With some 36 provinces reported by the government to have been hit by the typhoon -- the strongest ever to have made landfall anywhere in the world -- we know that a significant number of children will have been badly affected," Xinhua quoted Unicef's representative in the Philippines Tomoo Hozumi as saying.

"Unicef's first priorities are focused on life-saving interventions -- getting essential medicines, nutrition supplies, safe water and hygiene supplies to children and families," Hozumi said in a statement.

Unicef would join a rapid assessment within the next days, as conditions allow more access to the hardest hit regions.

The UN agency's supply systems were mobilised and Unicef was ready with NGO partners to help spearhead the response for children as access improves, said the statement.

Unicef staff already in the Philippines were being repositioned to deliver emergency response, with more colleagues on the way as backup, it said.

Its supply division in Copenhagen, Denmark, was loading some 60 tons of emergency supplies, including health, medical and shelter equipment, onto trucks bounding for the Copenhagen airport for an emergency airlift.

Other supply divisions in Europe and Asia were also airlifting water purification and storage equipment and sanitation supplies directly from suppliers to Manila, capital of the Philippines.

The supplies were expected to arrive in the Philippines Tuesday, the statement added.

Abbas' Dismal Failure at the United Nations

Oct 1 2014 1:19pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

As someone who has consistently advocated a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians based on a two-state solution, I was appalled to hear the speech delivered by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas at the United Nations General Assembly. Instead of using the occasion to provide constructive proposals and use reconciliatory language to advance the cause of peace, he engaged in acrimonious and discordant statement ...

Bring Social Justice In From the Cold As We Get Closer to a Global Climate Change Deal

Oct 1 2014 9:45am CDT | Source: Truthout Stories

The UN Climate Summit in New York brought together politics, business and civil society to build up momentum for major climate change talks in Paris next year. After the disappointments of the acrimonious Copenhagen meeting in 2009, there is now a chance for a global agreement on action against climate change. Low carbon development pledges and substantial financing of the Green Climate Fund are one side of the coin. But climate justice is also about social justice, and leaders must ...

Why an unequal planet can never be green

Sep 30 2014 4:44pm CDT | Source: WND

(Common Dreams) — What is it going to take to save the planet from environmental devastation? Sheer people power? We certainly saw that on the eve of last week’s UN Climate Summit in New York. Some 400,000 marchers packed the streets of Manhattan. Millions more rallied the same day in over 2,600 other actions in 162 countries. Or can simple shaming get world leaders to start seriously addressing the climate change challenge? We saw some serious shaming last week, too. Spoken-w ...

Obama's Fantasist Policies Make the World More Dangerous

Sep 30 2014 12:00pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Obama, with a 45-minute speech before the United Nations, wants us to think he's ready to get serious about facing down Islamic State (ISIS) militants in the Middle East. After months of minimizing the threat posed by the radical group terrorizing Iraq and Syria, and with his credibility and poll numbers sinking, the president is finally talking tougher. "I have made it clear that we will hunt down terrorists who threaten our c ...

Without Peace, Can There Be Development?

Sep 30 2014 11:14am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

As UN Member States follow last week's General Assembly debates with the months-long intergovernmental negotiations around the post-2015 development agenda, this is a critical time to remind all stakeholders that a strong goal on peace and security must remain on the list of proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which currently number at 17. War, violence and high levels of crime affect over 1.5 b ...
