Al Qaeda leader orders disbandment of Syria unit

Nov 10 2013, 8:14am CST | by IANS

Moscow, Nov 10 (IANS) In a significant development ahead of the Geneva II talks on the Syrian crisis, Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has called for disbandment of its affiliated unit, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Moscow, Nov 10 — In a significant development ahead of the Geneva II talks on the Syrian crisis, Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has called for disbandment of its affiliated unit, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

"The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is to be abolished, while the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) remains functioning (in Iraq)," al-Zawahari told Al Jazeera in an audio-taped message, according to reports Sunday.

He said that ISIL leader Abu Bakr Baghdadi "made a mistake by establishing the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant without asking for our permission, or even informing".

The merger plan has been "damaging to all jihadists", Zawahiri said.

The jihadist Al-Nusra Front (Jabhat al-Nusra) would continue to function as "an independent branch of Al Qaeda that reports to the general command", while the activities of the ISI would be limited to operations inside Iraq, the Russia Today quoted Zawahiri as saying in the tape to Al Jazeera.

"It is not clear when Friday's (Nov 8) statement was recorded, but it appears to be confirmation of a letter that Ayman al-Zawahri allegedly wrote in June that was posted on Al Jazeera's website. However, at that time the letter's authenticity could not be independently verified," the Russia Today reported.

Earlier in June, Zawahri had to intervene in a dispute between the Iraqi and Syrian branches of his network.

The discord between Al Qaeda branches occurred back in April when ISIL announced it had united with Syria's Al-Nusra Front, which gained much power in Syria through engaging in fight directly against government troops and local militias allied with it.

Although Al-Nusra leader Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani acknowledged a relationship between the two groups, he denied there had been a merger and publicly pledged his loyalty to Zawahiri.

The 'Bent Twig' of Arabia: A Note on the Origins of Jihadism

Oct 8 2014 4:17pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Champs Elysées might be an odd place to consider the rapid metastasis of jihad, but on a recent visit viewing the grandeur of the Arc de Triomphe at one end and the Place de la Concorde visible down the bustling boulevard did bring to mind an abiding lesson. The French, at the height of their power, lorded over much of Europe not only militarily but socially, the "social" in this sense being the very definition of what society's relationship ...

John Boehner and the Republican House Votes With Obama... Wait, What!?

Sep 18 2014 9:58am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Professional. Bipartisan. Serious. Mature. Those are four words that you would not ordinarily associate with Washington politics, especially during a tough congressional re-election year when everyone is trying to save themselves from being fired. And you definitely would not utter those words when describing the relationship between President Barack Obama and the Republican-controlled House of Representatives -- a relationship that has proven to be as just as s ...

A New AUMF: What Is the Obama Administration Afraid of?

Sep 16 2014 9:49am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Cobbling together a "coalition of willing partners" against the Islamic State, as Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby framed it for reporters during a press briefing, is hard enough for the Obama administration. Secretary of State John Kerry has been making the rounds and talking with virtually everyone in the Middle East to try to enlist their support. All the while, the war ...

Saudis drop idea of toppling Syrian regime

Sep 14 2014 7:36pm CDT | Source: WND

Syria’s Bashar al-Assad WASHINGTON – The Saudis are telling Russia they no longer seek to topple the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad, but insist they should continue arming and training their surrogates in the Free Syrian Army as opposition to ISIS – even though FSA commanders have signed a non-aggression pact with ISIS. Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal reportedly gave the news to Russian President Vladimir Putin, a staunch defender of the Assad regime. However, Middle East sources rega ...

Why Obama Should Ask Congress for an ISIS AUMF

Sep 2 2014 1:06pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Barack Obama and his national security advisers have some serious thinking to do over the next week on the scope, duration and lethality of U.S. military action against the organization calling itself the Islamic State. To date, the president has relied upon the Article II powers that are granted to his office by the U.S. Constitution, such as the ability of the Commander-in-Chief to take limited military action when ...
