US not 'stupid' in pursuing deal with Iran: Kerry

Nov 10 2013, 8:10pm CST | by IANS

Washington, Nov 11 (IANS) The US is not "blind" or "stupid" in pursuing a deal over the controversial nuclear programme in the Islamic republic, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday.

Washington, Nov 11 — The US is not "blind" or "stupid" in pursuing a deal over the controversial nuclear programme in the Islamic republic, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday.

The statement came as world powers were engaged in "serious" talks with Iran over its nuclear programme, Xinhua reported.

Kerry made the remarks after three-day intensive talks in Geneva between Iran and Britain, China, France, Russia and the US plus Germany, the so-called P5+1, narrowed their differences but failed to produce an interim deal amid hyped expectations.

The two sides agreed to meet again Nov 20 at the conclusion of their talks Saturday.

"This is the first time that the P5(1) had come together with this kind of a serious set of possible options in front of it, with a new Iranian government," Kerry told NBC's "Meet the Press" programme in Geneva.

"This is a new overture, and it has to be put to the test very, very carefully," he said.

"Some of the most serious and capable, expert people in our government, who have spent a lifetime dealing both with Iran as well as with nuclear weapons and nuclear armament and proliferation, are engaged in our negotiation," he added. "We are not blind, and I don't think we're stupid."

Israel and some hawkish US lawmakers have inveighed against the proposed deal with Iran, in particular the potential relaxation of some sanctions against Tehran.

On the proposed accord with Iran, Kerry said "It is a first step in an effort that will lock the programme in where it is today in fact, set it back while one negotiates the full deal."

"And there will not be a relaxation of the pressure," he added. "Nobody has talked about getting rid of the current architecture of sanctions. The pressure will remain."

WASHINGTON -- A new advocacy campaign is borrowing from Beyonce to push Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to support a two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. J Street, an American advocacy group that promotes Middle East peace, has released a graphic depicting a cartoonish Netanyahu that reads, "If you like it then you should put a border on it." Netanyahu is shown in front of two women wearing leotards shaped like the country of ...

Monkey Cage: Hot pursuit in Syria and in history

Sep 28 2014 10:17am CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

Secretary of State John Kerry justified the use of U.S. airpower in Syria in part on the shaky legal grounds of “hot pursuit.” Presumably this would entail the use of force to pursue militants who committed some crime in Territory X but fled into Territory Z and would allow X to temporarily violate Z’s sovereignty. The phrase has a long and storied history. In the 20th century, the idea of chasing bandits across borders conjures an image of Pancho Villa and the United States’ failed r ...

John Kerry Attempts to Bully CODEPINK into Silence

Sep 26 2014 4:16pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

There aren't many who come to Congress to protest -- not nearly enough -- and the disparaging comments of chairs of committees and witnesses toward those who do challenge administrations are certainly aimed at discouraging pesky, uncomfortable protests. It wasn't that anyone liked Sadaam Hussein and his treatment of many in Iraq, but we knew we were being lied into a war with the false claims of weapons of mass destruction and w ...

Obama Should Send John Boehner a "Thank You" Card

Sep 26 2014 2:51pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Before members of Congress adjourned earlier this month for seven weeks to go out campaigning, some very senior and high-proifle voices in both houses were making some firm commitments on the subject of war and peace. Perhaps realizing that packing their bags and jolting out of town on the eve of a new military conflict in Syria wasn't the best way to improve its image with the public, lawmakers from both part ...
