US not 'stupid' in pursuing deal with Iran: Kerry

Nov 10 2013, 8:10pm CST | by IANS

Washington, Nov 11 (IANS) The US is not "blind" or "stupid" in pursuing a deal over the controversial nuclear programme in the Islamic republic, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday.

Washington, Nov 11 — The US is not "blind" or "stupid" in pursuing a deal over the controversial nuclear programme in the Islamic republic, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday.

The statement came as world powers were engaged in "serious" talks with Iran over its nuclear programme, Xinhua reported.

Kerry made the remarks after three-day intensive talks in Geneva between Iran and Britain, China, France, Russia and the US plus Germany, the so-called P5+1, narrowed their differences but failed to produce an interim deal amid hyped expectations.

The two sides agreed to meet again Nov 20 at the conclusion of their talks Saturday.

"This is the first time that the P5(1) had come together with this kind of a serious set of possible options in front of it, with a new Iranian government," Kerry told NBC's "Meet the Press" programme in Geneva.

"This is a new overture, and it has to be put to the test very, very carefully," he said.

"Some of the most serious and capable, expert people in our government, who have spent a lifetime dealing both with Iran as well as with nuclear weapons and nuclear armament and proliferation, are engaged in our negotiation," he added. "We are not blind, and I don't think we're stupid."

Israel and some hawkish US lawmakers have inveighed against the proposed deal with Iran, in particular the potential relaxation of some sanctions against Tehran.

On the proposed accord with Iran, Kerry said "It is a first step in an effort that will lock the programme in where it is today in fact, set it back while one negotiates the full deal."

"And there will not be a relaxation of the pressure," he added. "Nobody has talked about getting rid of the current architecture of sanctions. The pressure will remain."

Kerry: Kobani Is Just 'One Community'

Oct 13 2014 3:00pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Monday, Secretary of State John Kerry downplayed the importance of defending the besieged Syrian border town of Kobani despite widespread reports that ISIS is using its success there as a recruiting tool. Kerry said, “Kobani is one community, and it’s a tragedy what is happening there, and we don’t diminish that. But we have said from day one it is going to take a period of time to bring the coalition thoroughly to the table, to rebuild some of the morale and capacity of the Iraqi a ...

Oct 13 2014 1:33pm CDT | Source: WND

(CNSNEWS) — “Life as you know it on Earth ends” if climate change skeptics are wrong, Sec. of State John Kerry declared Thursday. But, even if climate alarmists are wrong, nothing bad can come of enacting their taxes, restrictions and regulations, Kerry said in a speech at the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center: “I’d just say to all of you here that people need to feel the pressure from you. You all know what politics is about. I’m not in it now ...

Does America Have a Foreign Policy?

Oct 13 2014 10:37am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Sadly, the answer is 'no.' We have not had one since Barack Obama entered the Oval Office six years ago. That does not mean that his actions have been worse than his Bush predecessor's or that he has made more mistakes. That depends in good part on one's preferences and angle of vision. What it does mean is that the United States' external relations have not been guided by a compreh ...
