US not 'stupid' in pursuing deal with Iran: Kerry

Nov 10 2013, 8:10pm CST | by IANS

Washington, Nov 11 (IANS) The US is not "blind" or "stupid" in pursuing a deal over the controversial nuclear programme in the Islamic republic, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday.

Washington, Nov 11 — The US is not "blind" or "stupid" in pursuing a deal over the controversial nuclear programme in the Islamic republic, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday.

The statement came as world powers were engaged in "serious" talks with Iran over its nuclear programme, Xinhua reported.

Kerry made the remarks after three-day intensive talks in Geneva between Iran and Britain, China, France, Russia and the US plus Germany, the so-called P5+1, narrowed their differences but failed to produce an interim deal amid hyped expectations.

The two sides agreed to meet again Nov 20 at the conclusion of their talks Saturday.

"This is the first time that the P5(1) had come together with this kind of a serious set of possible options in front of it, with a new Iranian government," Kerry told NBC's "Meet the Press" programme in Geneva.

"This is a new overture, and it has to be put to the test very, very carefully," he said.

"Some of the most serious and capable, expert people in our government, who have spent a lifetime dealing both with Iran as well as with nuclear weapons and nuclear armament and proliferation, are engaged in our negotiation," he added. "We are not blind, and I don't think we're stupid."

Israel and some hawkish US lawmakers have inveighed against the proposed deal with Iran, in particular the potential relaxation of some sanctions against Tehran.

On the proposed accord with Iran, Kerry said "It is a first step in an effort that will lock the programme in where it is today in fact, set it back while one negotiates the full deal."

"And there will not be a relaxation of the pressure," he added. "Nobody has talked about getting rid of the current architecture of sanctions. The pressure will remain."

Syria Vote Isn't Last Word From Congress On War

Sep 22 2014 7:29am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — As far as Congress is concerned, President Barack Obama's Mideast war strategy isn't in the clear yet. The president got what he wanted this past week when the House and Senate overwhelmingly approved arming and training moderate Syrian rebels to fight Islamic State militants. But the go-ahead is good for less than three months. And many lawmakers want a say over the rest of a p ...

Power Says Other Nations Will Join The U.S. In Airstrikes In Syria

Sep 21 2014 10:00am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, said Sunday that other nations would likely join the U.S. in airstrikes to target Islamic State, the militant group also known as ISIL, in Syria. ABC's "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos pointed out that not even the British government has agreed to join so far, making it increasingly likely that the U.S. would be going it alone if it proceeds with airstrikes in Syria. "I wil ...

New York Times snubs David Limbaugh's 'Jesus' book

Sep 19 2014 7:58pm CDT | Source: WND

NEW YORK – The New York Times has excluded David Limbaugh’s new book “Jesus on Trial: A Lawyer Affirms the Truth of the Gospel,” from it bestseller list despite sales figures superior to several books currently on the list. The book’s publisher, Regnery Publishing, told WND the exclusion of Limbaugh’s book from the Sept. 28 print hardcover bestseller list reflects ideological bias against conservative and Christian titles. “While publishers have long tried ...

John Kerry: US At War With The 'Enemy of Islam'

Sep 19 2014 10:03am CDT | Source: Big Government

On Thursday In a session with the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Secretary of State John Kerry was asked by Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) whether America was at war in Iraq and Syria. Kerry responded: “If you’re more comfortable calling it a war against this enemy of Islam then please do so. We’re happy to call it that.” So its official: America is at war with the enemy of Islam. However, strange bedfellows arise if the Obama administratio ...

Congressman: Obama plotting ISIS airstrikes a 'big mistake'

Sep 18 2014 7:19pm CDT | Source: WND

Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., is ripping President Obama over reports he will personally oversee the bombing of ISIS targets in Syria and believes the bipartisan vote to arm and train Syrian rebels for the fight is a “big mistake.” The U.S. has been conducting air strikes against ISIS in Iraq for weeks. However, according to the Wall Street Journal, Obama is planning to be directly involved in plotting air strikes across the borde ...

More insane arming of 'moderates'

Sep 18 2014 6:24pm CDT | Source: WND

I’m trying to look on the bright side of what passed for debate over another doomed effort to secure U.S. interests by embarking on the fruitless pursuit, cultivation and empowerment of Islamic “moderates,” this time in Syria. We would get better results sending an expeditionary force after the Loch Ness sea monster. No matter. In deliberations resembling a stampede, we heard: The ISIS is coming, the ISIS is coming! ...

Kerry: America at 'war against this enemy of Islam'

Sep 18 2014 4:54pm CDT | Source: WND

(Washington FreeBeacon) Secretary of State John Kerry gave a long, meandering reply to Chairman of the House Armed Services Military Personnel Subcommittee Rep. Joe Wilson (R., S.C.) after being asked: “Yes or no? Is America at war?” “Well, you know,” Kerry paused to laugh, “Um, I’m going to answer that, Mr. Chairman, but um…you know…” Kerry waffled a while longer, explaining how the American mission against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) is not ...

HUFFPOST HILL - The House Will Smell Ya Later

Sep 18 2014 4:35pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Turnout was high for today's vote on Scottish independence, and as soon as we know how that'll affect Hillary's chances in Iowa, we'll let you know. Ezekiel Emanuel penned an Atlantic essay titled, "Why I Hope to Die at 75" that had absolutely nothing to do with putting up with an 80-year-old Rahm Emanuel. And the House is avoiding a number of key votes to get back to their districts and tend to the important issues they must ignore. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Th ...

Obama Is Wrong That ISIS Is 'Not Islamic'

Sep 18 2014 4:14pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

"We are fighting an ideology, not a regime." - U.S. Secretary Of State John Kerry "Now let's make two things clear: ISIL is not 'Islamic.' No religion condones the killing of innocents, and the vast majority of ISIL's victims have been Muslim. And ISIL is certainly not a state. It was formerly al-Qaeda's affiliate in Iraq, and has taken advantage of sectarian strife and Syria's civil war to gain territory on both sides of the Ir ...
