US not 'stupid' in pursuing deal with Iran: Kerry

Nov 10 2013, 8:10pm CST | by IANS

Washington, Nov 11 (IANS) The US is not "blind" or "stupid" in pursuing a deal over the controversial nuclear programme in the Islamic republic, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday.

Washington, Nov 11 — The US is not "blind" or "stupid" in pursuing a deal over the controversial nuclear programme in the Islamic republic, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday.

The statement came as world powers were engaged in "serious" talks with Iran over its nuclear programme, Xinhua reported.

Kerry made the remarks after three-day intensive talks in Geneva between Iran and Britain, China, France, Russia and the US plus Germany, the so-called P5+1, narrowed their differences but failed to produce an interim deal amid hyped expectations.

The two sides agreed to meet again Nov 20 at the conclusion of their talks Saturday.

"This is the first time that the P5(1) had come together with this kind of a serious set of possible options in front of it, with a new Iranian government," Kerry told NBC's "Meet the Press" programme in Geneva.

"This is a new overture, and it has to be put to the test very, very carefully," he said.

"Some of the most serious and capable, expert people in our government, who have spent a lifetime dealing both with Iran as well as with nuclear weapons and nuclear armament and proliferation, are engaged in our negotiation," he added. "We are not blind, and I don't think we're stupid."

Israel and some hawkish US lawmakers have inveighed against the proposed deal with Iran, in particular the potential relaxation of some sanctions against Tehran.

On the proposed accord with Iran, Kerry said "It is a first step in an effort that will lock the programme in where it is today in fact, set it back while one negotiates the full deal."

"And there will not be a relaxation of the pressure," he added. "Nobody has talked about getting rid of the current architecture of sanctions. The pressure will remain."

On Election Night, Pack an Umbrella

Nov 4 2014 2:02pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

I spent the last 24 hours of the last midterm elections clutching a pocket folder with two sets of index cards inside. On one set was printed a victory speech no one outside our campaign thought we were going to need. On the other was a concession speech I hadn't even shown the guy who might have to deliver it that night, like it was his own eulogy. Four years ago I was writing speeches for ...

Two States to Watch

Nov 4 2014 8:56am CST | Source: Taegan Goddard's Political Wire

First Read: “We’ll have a good idea early in the evening of how Election Night is going to break. The two states to watch — North Carolina (where final polling places close at 7:30 am ET) and New Hampshire (where they close at 8:00 pm ET). Every scenario of Democrats holding on to the Senate assumes they win those two states. If we’re able to put those two in the Democratic column, then we’re going to have to wait for Alaska, especially if Georgia goes to a runoff. But if Republica ...

What a Republican Senate Would Mean for World Politics

Nov 4 2014 7:54am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

On Tuesday, when tens of millions of US voters go to the polls, they are very likely to deliver a US Senate majority to the Republican Party. Six years into the administration of Democratic President Barack Obama and four years after the midterm elections that delivered control of the US House of Representatives to the Republicans and conservative Speaker John Boehner, most polls and poll aggregate forecasts give the Republicans anywhere from a strong (70 perc ...

How You Can Help Save the Senate

Nov 3 2014 1:56pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The battle for the Senate has been a cliffhanger for months. Races in at least ten states that will decide the balance of power have remained too close to call, despite corporate pundits' haste to forecast a GOP victory. Now, on the eve of Election Day, it's tempting to throw up your hands, sit back and wait for the returns to come in. That's exactly what Republicans are hoping we'll do. Give up hope and do nothing. What's the alte ...

MPs Should Get Some Business Experience before Lecturing Us Against Exiting the EU

Nov 3 2014 9:23am CST | Source: Big Government

I'm getting quite tired of listening to politicians, and indeed some friends, who have never set up a business, or run a business, tell me about recklessness of pulling out of the European Union. Now, as of yet, I don't have kids, although I am a proud uncle. But based on the fact that I know so little about parenting, I wouldn't march blasé into broadcasting studios lecturing parents on where to shop, or on the process of applying for nursery voucher ...

Last-minute polling finds the Republicans on track for a Senate victory tomorrow. Early voting, though, suggests it could be close. And what kind of voters are still undecided?
