US not 'stupid' in pursuing deal with Iran: Kerry

Nov 10 2013, 8:10pm CST | by IANS

Washington, Nov 11 (IANS) The US is not "blind" or "stupid" in pursuing a deal over the controversial nuclear programme in the Islamic republic, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday.

Washington, Nov 11 — The US is not "blind" or "stupid" in pursuing a deal over the controversial nuclear programme in the Islamic republic, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday.

The statement came as world powers were engaged in "serious" talks with Iran over its nuclear programme, Xinhua reported.

Kerry made the remarks after three-day intensive talks in Geneva between Iran and Britain, China, France, Russia and the US plus Germany, the so-called P5+1, narrowed their differences but failed to produce an interim deal amid hyped expectations.

The two sides agreed to meet again Nov 20 at the conclusion of their talks Saturday.

"This is the first time that the P5(1) had come together with this kind of a serious set of possible options in front of it, with a new Iranian government," Kerry told NBC's "Meet the Press" programme in Geneva.

"This is a new overture, and it has to be put to the test very, very carefully," he said.

"Some of the most serious and capable, expert people in our government, who have spent a lifetime dealing both with Iran as well as with nuclear weapons and nuclear armament and proliferation, are engaged in our negotiation," he added. "We are not blind, and I don't think we're stupid."

Israel and some hawkish US lawmakers have inveighed against the proposed deal with Iran, in particular the potential relaxation of some sanctions against Tehran.

On the proposed accord with Iran, Kerry said "It is a first step in an effort that will lock the programme in where it is today in fact, set it back while one negotiates the full deal."

"And there will not be a relaxation of the pressure," he added. "Nobody has talked about getting rid of the current architecture of sanctions. The pressure will remain."

Oct 25 2014 1:53pm CDT | Source: WND

(YNETNEWS) — “There is a crisis with the Americans and it needs to be addressed as a crisis,” Finance Minister Yair Lapid said Saturday after ongoing tensions between Washington and Jerusalem led US officials to block Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon from meeting with senior administration officials during his current US visit. “We mustn’t pretend there isn’t a crisis,” Lapid told a crowd in Tel Aviv Saturday. “Our relations with the US are vital and everything tha ...

Washington Must Recognize India as Another Great Power to Be

Oct 25 2014 10:08am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Before becoming prime minister, India's Narendra Modi was barred from receiving a visa to visit the U.S. A rising leader in the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he was tied to deadly sectarian violence. But now, backed by an overwhelming parliamentary majority, he leads one of Asia's most important powers. The Obama administration rolled out the red carpet when he visited. India won independence in 1947, but was born in violence when Britain divided the vast colony ...

John Kerry: U.S. Won't Apologize To North Korea To Free Americans

Oct 24 2014 1:40pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday urged North Korea to release two detained Americans to build goodwill with the United States, but ruled out providing a U.S. apology to Pyongyang to win their freedom. Kerry said North Korea should free Matthew Miller and Kenneth Bae for humanitarian reasons and because they are being held "inappropriately." Miller is serving a six-year jail term ...

Gary Webb Was Right

Oct 24 2014 9:01am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

"Gary Webb was no journalism hero, despite what 'Kill the Messenger' says," read the recent Washington Post Op-ed headline. It's a sad sight, especially at a time when real journalism is shriveling and in retreat, including in the Washington Post news room. Once again the paper has decided to focus on discrediting a fellow journalist instead of deepening the analysis of the story he highlighted ...

Weapon of Mass Delusion: Rove Lied, Republican Brand Died

Oct 24 2014 8:36am CDT | Source: Big Government

Many people were startled when the New York Times broke an eight part story a few days ago about a Karl Rove-led cover-up of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) in Iraq -- and then The Daily Beast followed up with a report entitled "Insiders Blame Rove for Covering Up Iraq's Real WMD." The Beast even sub-titled their piece "There’s one man, some Republicans say, who kept the public from learning about the chemical shells littered aroun ...

In the Loop: Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns is retiring. Really, he is.

Oct 23 2014 11:00am CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

This is the week that many in the State Department hoped would never come — the week when Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns actually hung up his pinstripes. Not that it is a surprise. In April, when Burns, a 32-year Foreign Service veteran and only the second career diplomat to rise to the deputy secretary slot, announced his intent to go, Secretary of State John Kerry called him a “diplomatic ...

Remember When the U.S. Barred Travelers With HIV? An Ebola Ban Could be Worse.

Oct 22 2014 1:19pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- Republican politicians, joined by a few Democrats in tight election races, have stepped up their calls in recent days for a temporary ban on all travelers coming from West Africa -- despite the fact that medical experts say such a measure is not only unnecessary but potentially harmful to efforts to stop the spread of Ebola. Why such a travel ban wouldn't work doesn't need to be speculative. In fact, f ...

Former UN Special Rapporteur Richard Falk on the Legitimacy of Hope in the Palestinian Struggle

Oct 22 2014 10:12am CDT | Source: Truthout Stories

On Monday, the Israeli government made a rare appearance before the United Nations Human Rights Committee, but its delegation refused to acknowledge responsibility for the conditions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, occupied by Israel for nearly half a century. We speak to a legal expert who has just spent six years trying to hold Israel to account for its actions in the Occupied Territories. Richard Falk recently completed his term as special rapporteur on Palestinian human rights for the U ...
