Disappointing start to Indian diaspora meet in Australia

Nov 11 2013, 5:22am CST | by IANS

Sydney, Nov 11 (IANS) Despite the Indian diaspora in Australia, New Zealand and Pacific island nations numbering more than 800,000, the Indian government's regional Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PBD) in Sydney has been able to attract no more than a mere 350 delegates. The event was inaugurated Nov 11 at the Sydney Convention Centre.

Sydney, Nov 11 — Despite the Indian diaspora in Australia, New Zealand and Pacific island nations numbering more than 800,000, the Indian government's regional Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PBD) in Sydney has been able to attract no more than a mere 350 delegates. The event was inaugurated Nov 11 at the Sydney Convention Centre.

With over 140 speakers expected to take part in various panel discussions over the three days it is being held, it was disappointing to note that the organisers could not promote the positive message of connecting the diaspora.

Attendees at the opening day of PBD Sydney were disappointed and appalled by the lack of planning and the poor attendance for this much anticipated event.

The common grievances bandied about at the meet were the lack of input sought by the Indian High Commissioner in Australia Biren Nanda from the local diaspora on issues of interest to them in their lives as "pravasi Bharatiyas" (overseas Indians).

Instead the programme seems to have been hijacked by business interests which were more focused on business issues, rather than people-to-people concerns.

"This was meant to be about the regular Indian in overseas countries, not about trade and business which seem to be the main focus of these three days," commented one attendee, who did not wish to give his name.

The other point of contention was the decision to run the event on weekdays, rather than over a weekend. This meant that many could not attend due to work commitments.

Participants, who have attended previous PBDs, were also not impressed with the delegate admission fee of A$425. This is almost double that of previous regional PBDs, Munish Gupta, managing editor of PIO TV and a delegate from the US, noted.

Break-out sessions were also poorly attended with an average of between 20 and 50 people in each session, almost a quarter of them being speakers.

Australian PM Abbott Puts Military on Standby 'to Ensure We Get Justice' for MH17 Victims

Jul 21 2014 11:14am CDT | Source: Big Government

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has warned that he has put his nation's military on standby in response to the alleged shooting down of commercial aircraft Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, on which 28 Australian citizens died. Any action by Russia to prevent Australian access to the crash site, he said, would be taken "very badly." "It does look more like a garden cleanup than a forensic investigation," Abbott said in an address to the nation, in which he exp ...

(WASHINGTON TIMES) The nation’s HIV rate has fallen by a third in the last decade, federal researchers said in a new report released in advance of this week’s upcoming AIDS conference in Australia. While many population groups shared in this welcome decline in new HIV cases, one group — young gay or bisexual men — saw a 133 percent increase over the period. The Fix: Australia’s decision to dump its carbon tax reveals more about politics than the environment

Jul 19 2014 8:01am CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

Australia's Senate voted this week to end the country's contentious carbon tax. The decision was a clear victory for opponents of the tax and, more broadly, for those who oppose taking that action to fight climate change. But there's a more potent lesson that can be taken from the reversal, about the intricacies of coalition politics and the challenges of addressing long-term problems with sh ...

Australia: Assange, 'man up' and go to Sweden

Jul 17 2014 11:15pm CDT | Source: WND

(The Local) Australia’s attorney-general prompted an angry response from WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Thursday after he said he should be “man enough” to face Swedish sexual assault allegations. The Australian, who has been holed up in Ecuador’s embassy in London for more than two years, lost a court bid on Wednesday to get a Swedish arrest warrant against him scrapped. Australian Attorney-General George Brandis told ABC radio the 43-year-old sho ...
