Typhoon Haiyan kills 13 in Vietnam

Nov 11 2013, 5:46am CST | by IANS

Hanoi, Nov 11 (IANS) At least 13 people were killed and 81 others injured as Typhoon Haiyan, packing winds about 115 kmph, ripped through Vietnam late Sunday and early Monday, rescue officials said.

Hanoi, Nov 11 — At least 13 people were killed and 81 others injured as Typhoon Haiyan, packing winds about 115 kmph, ripped through Vietnam late Sunday and early Monday, rescue officials said.

Of the victims, four were in Quang Nam province, two in Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Ngai each, and one in Ha Tinh and Quang Binh provinces each. The rest of the victims were from other areas, Xinhua reported.

Officials of the National Committee for Search and Rescue said most of the victims were reinforcing their houses or trimming trees when Haiyan hit their locations.

After running along Vietnam's central region, Haiyan slammed the northern Quang Ninh and Hai Phong provinces, with its centre on Quang Ninh province, around 5 a.m. Monday.

The storm packed winds up to 117 kph, the Vietnam National Centre for Hydro- Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) reported.

The typhoon forced evacuation of 500,000 people in central provinces.

Many streets in Quang Ninh province's Ha Long city have been submerged in 0.5 metre of floodwater due to the rise of the sea level caused by the storm. Many trees were uprooted and houses damaged across the province.

In Van Don district anchored ships were lashed by powerful winds and sank. The typhoon also slammed the province's Mong Cai town, which borders China, with winds of speeds between 62 to 88 kmph.

The typhoon caused heavy rain in northeastern provinces with rainfall measuring 370 mm in Mau Son (Lang Son province), 161 mm in Quang Ha (Quang Ninh province) and 149 mm in Bach Long Vi (Hai Phong city).

In capital Hanoi, 12 power lines were broken Sunday night, but were repaired Monday morning.

The Electricity of Vietnam Monday said it will mobilise all of its human resource to repair the power grid in the typhoon-hit areas as soon as possible.

Revealed U.S. Strategy to Battle ISIS Is Wanting

Nov 3 2014 9:34am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

American and Iraqi officials are leaking a plan to battle the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). On the surface, the roadmap to victory seems plausible, but as I note in my book, The Failure of Counterinsurgency: Why Hearts and Minds Are Seldom Won, such well-laid plans often go off the rails in execution on real battlefields. Although ISIS is not strictly an insurgent (guerrilla) force, because the group has some heavy weapons and infrastructure, it has made gains despite U. ...

Ebola in Africa, Fears in the US: Let's Get Hard on Issues, Soft on People

Oct 29 2014 10:51am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Three members of my family are living and working in Africa right now, and I am telling you that the current American obsession with isolation tents, protective gear, and quarantines is making me feel very strange. My folks are not in "Ebola countries" (two are in Ivory Coast, one in Rwanda) and they are not treating viral fevers (two promote economic stability, one trains local surgeons). But they, l ...

Dow Chemical and Monsanto Are At It Again as EPA and USDA Approve "Agent Orange" Crops

Oct 27 2014 4:32pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In a long overdue effort, the U.S. is currently spending millions of dollars to help the Vietnamese clean up the tragic legacy of our use of Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. The effort to remove the remaining contamination caused by the toxic mix of herbicides is expected to be completed in the next few years. Agent Orange was primarily manufactured by Dow Chemical and Monsanto, and these two companies are at it again. This time, they've teamed up to unleash a ...

Updated Weinberger Principles Still a Guide for Use of U.S. Force

Oct 23 2014 7:00pm CDT | Source: World Politics Review

In 1984, at the height of the post-Vietnam malaise, then-Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger suggested a set of principles to guide the use of the American military. Since then, the principles fell by the wayside, resulting in renewed malaise. It might be time to dust off the Weinberger principles ...
