Typhoon Haiyan kills 13 in Vietnam

Nov 11 2013, 5:46am CST | by IANS

Hanoi, Nov 11 (IANS) At least 13 people were killed and 81 others injured as Typhoon Haiyan, packing winds about 115 kmph, ripped through Vietnam late Sunday and early Monday, rescue officials said.

Hanoi, Nov 11 — At least 13 people were killed and 81 others injured as Typhoon Haiyan, packing winds about 115 kmph, ripped through Vietnam late Sunday and early Monday, rescue officials said.

Of the victims, four were in Quang Nam province, two in Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Ngai each, and one in Ha Tinh and Quang Binh provinces each. The rest of the victims were from other areas, Xinhua reported.

Officials of the National Committee for Search and Rescue said most of the victims were reinforcing their houses or trimming trees when Haiyan hit their locations.

After running along Vietnam's central region, Haiyan slammed the northern Quang Ninh and Hai Phong provinces, with its centre on Quang Ninh province, around 5 a.m. Monday.

The storm packed winds up to 117 kph, the Vietnam National Centre for Hydro- Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) reported.

The typhoon forced evacuation of 500,000 people in central provinces.

Many streets in Quang Ninh province's Ha Long city have been submerged in 0.5 metre of floodwater due to the rise of the sea level caused by the storm. Many trees were uprooted and houses damaged across the province.

In Van Don district anchored ships were lashed by powerful winds and sank. The typhoon also slammed the province's Mong Cai town, which borders China, with winds of speeds between 62 to 88 kmph.

The typhoon caused heavy rain in northeastern provinces with rainfall measuring 370 mm in Mau Son (Lang Son province), 161 mm in Quang Ha (Quang Ninh province) and 149 mm in Bach Long Vi (Hai Phong city).

In capital Hanoi, 12 power lines were broken Sunday night, but were repaired Monday morning.

The Electricity of Vietnam Monday said it will mobilise all of its human resource to repair the power grid in the typhoon-hit areas as soon as possible.

The communist state of Laos has categorically banned any online criticism of the government in a new set of laws that criminalizes speaking ill of the government on the Internet and any outlet that facilitates the publication of such online criticism. Reuters reports that the legislation, approved last week by Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong, punishes "false" information spread online by any individual. Security expert: Las Vegas could be ISIS target

Sep 17 2014 10:36pm CDT | Source: WND

(KLAS-TV) The original commander of the Navy’s famed Seal Team 6 special ops unit, which is the team that finally took out terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, says an attack on Las Vegas would be a tremendous recruiting tool for ISIS or other terror groups. Commander Dick Marcinko, a decorated combat veteran in Vietnam, who helped create Seal Team 6 in 1980, was one of the first military figures to warn about the growth of ...

ISIL and the World's Policeman

Sep 15 2014 2:07pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Obama's speech to the nation on ISIL and the follow-up statements by the White House and administration officials reveal the political bind that American policy makers find themselves in when dealing with the chaos in the Middle East, or in the Ukraine and Sudan for that matter. Beginning with the disillusionment over the war in Vietnam, followed by a series of misadventures in Iraq and Afghanistan, the American people are much more skeptical of adopting the role of ...

Images Matter: ISIL Knew That

Sep 14 2014 1:16pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Big, bold images of barbarism are shocking and shaking our civilization to its very core with the third brutal beheading and murder by ISIL of three: two US journalists James Foley, Steven Sotloff, and now humanitarian British worker David Haines. CNN, this was not an execution, but rather an act of barbarism and murder sent out over the airwaves via social media. And somehow they knew that these images would mar the psyche, and forever scar a generation. Just as the pictures of ...

Ah, Yes. Another Sanitized Air War

Sep 12 2014 4:30pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

I wrote a draft of this post four months ago, before the 70th Anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. Then it fell through the cracks. Given our commander in chief's recent announcement of "a steady, relentless effort to take out ISIL wherever they exist, using our air power" in an operation that "will take time," it seemed time to resurrect the piece. "They've been running a lot of programming on D-Day, and it reminded me of a conversati ...

Federal Eye: What is an ‘illegal tax protester,’ and why can’t the IRS use that term any more?

Sep 11 2014 6:00am CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

Each year, the Internal Revenue Service deals with individuals who refuse to pay their taxes. Some believe the federal income tax is unconstitutional, others simply don’t want to pony up the cash, and a few have done it as a form of protest against non-tax-related policies such as gay-marriage laws or t ...
