26/11 attack intended to provoke India-Pakistan war: US expert

Nov 18 2013, 10:56pm CST | by IANS

Washington, Nov 19 (IANS) The 26/11 Mumbai terror attack was intended to change dramatically the future of South Asia, perhaps even by provoking a war between rising nuclear powers India and Pakistan, according to a top counter-terrorism expert.

Washington, Nov 19 — The 26/11 Mumbai terror attack was intended to change dramatically the future of South Asia, perhaps even by provoking a war between rising nuclear powers India and Pakistan, according to a top counter-terrorism expert.

Bruce Riedel, a former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) analyst, who has advised four US presidents on South Asian issues, says he had pointed this out to then President-elect Barack Obama and his transition team at the time in several briefings. Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taeba group (LeT) had carefully chosen the targets and meticulously researched them over several years, he wrote in The Daily Beast, an American news reporting and opinion website

"They received considerable assistance in doing so from two sources-the Pakistani intelligence service, called the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate or ISI, and Al Qaeda."

"Each had its own agenda for the operation. But the targets were the same - Indians, Americans, and Jews - the targets of the global jihad started by Al Qaeda in the late 1990s," Riedel wrote.

Describing the November 2008 attack as "the most important terror attack since 9/11" he pointed out that the "10 terrorists' tactics have been copied by others since - for example, just weeks ago in Nairobi."

But "perhaps the most shocking element of the Mumbai attack was the role played by David Coleman Headley, an American citizen of Pakistani descent, in the intelligence collection that preceded the attack," Riedel wrote.

Born Daood Sayed Gilani in Washington, DC, in 1960, Headley changed his name at the behest of LeT to hide his Pakistani identity when travelling abroad. In his guilty confession, Headley, Riedel noted, acknowledged "the raid also was planned with active ISI involvement at every stage. At each of his meetings in Pakistan, he said he met with ISI officers as well as the LeT terror leaders."

"Sometimes the ISI gave him particular assignments separate from what the LeT asked; for example, tasking him with taking photos of an Indian nuclear facility near Mumbai," Riedel said.

Yet "the Pakistani mastermind of the Mumbai plot, LeT leader Hafiz Saeed, remains free in Pakistan, where he continues to be a darling of the ISI and regularly calls for more attacks on India and America," Riedel wrote noting "Five years after Mumbai, justice has yet to be served."

Aug 19 2014 8:42pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

By Jonathan Kaminsky NEW ORLEANS, Aug 19 (Reuters) - In a blow to Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal's move to withdraw his state from Common Core education standards, a state judge on Tuesday blocked Jindal's plan to scrap a key set of standardized tests due to be introduced in the coming school year. Jindal's push to ditch Common Core, announced in June and given teeth by his or ...

Eric Holder: Michael Brown Death Cause for 'Robust Action' to Increase Police Diversity

Aug 19 2014 7:07pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Attorney General Eric Holder vowed to use Michael Brown's death and the riots in Ferguson, Missouri, to push for more police diversity and even combat unintentional "disparate treatment under the law" of minorities. In an op-ed in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch ahead of his arrival in Ferguson on Wednesday, Holder called for "an end to the acts of violence in the streets of Ferguson" because ...

Police Militarization: It's Not About the Equipment, It's About Keeping the Peace

Aug 19 2014 6:52pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Militarization of police forces has become the latest buzz phrase for politicians, pundits, and, it seems, everybody else. By now everybody in America, and probably well across the world, knows about, and has a theory about, the riots and looting following the shooting of a black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri. And we all know about the reaction – or call it the escalation: first the local police, then the entry of the Missouri State Police and High ...

Why we're 'stuck' with Obama

Aug 19 2014 6:47pm CDT | Source: WND

I predicted it! I nailed it! On Aug. 5, I published a column in which I explained the next excuse that would be used for not holding Barack Obama accountable for even the most heinous impeachable offenses. Here’s what I wrote: “Let me tell you the next excuse the right will have for not seeking impeachment. They’ll soon say it’s so late in Obama’s second and final term that there’s little point to beginn ...

Obama lit the match in Ferguson

Aug 19 2014 6:34pm CDT | Source: WND

There is something very wrong. I can feel it. Can’t you? The unrest and rioting is getting worse in Ferguson. Get used to it. More unrest is on the way … soon to a street near you. Obama never lets a good crisis go to waste. For Obama, this is the perfect crisis. August 9. That was the day that a young black male was shot and killed by police in Ferguson, Missouri. That was 10 days ago. The situation has smolder ...

Romney: Obama's Mistakes and Errors Worse Than He Expected

Aug 19 2014 6:11pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Speaking to Barack Obama's tenure in office today, Mitt Romney said “It’s been a good deal worse than even I expected. I was not a big fan of the president’s policies, as you know, either domestically or internationally. But the results of his mistakes and errors, in my opinion, have been more severe than even I would have predicted.” On the stump with fellow Republicans in West Virginia, Romney cited "unrest in the Ukraine, the rise of the Islamic State terrorist group and stubborn e ...

What President Obama Should Do About Israel

Aug 19 2014 5:49pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Now that Hamas has broken the temporary ceasefire with Israel—for the eleventh time—President Barack Obama has the opportunity to make amends for his mistaken approach to the war in Gaza.  Until now, Obama has effectively encouraged Hamas by restraining Israel, elevating Hamas’s preferred mediators (Qatar and Turkey), condemning Israeli counter-attacks that inadvertently kill Palestinian civilians, and urging ceasefires wh ...

White House And Congressional Democrats Spin Through Another Cycle Of Psychodrama

Aug 19 2014 5:12pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

How to solve a problem like the White House relationship with Congress? And why should I be involved -- aren't these people supposedly adults? These are two questions I am asking myself today, because despite the fact that a few months ago, congressional Democrats were loudly signaling, "Stay away from us, Mr. President! Please remain aloof," congressional Democrats are now really super-emotional about the extent to which Pres ...
