26/11 attack intended to provoke India-Pakistan war: US expert

Nov 18 2013, 10:56pm CST | by IANS

Washington, Nov 19 (IANS) The 26/11 Mumbai terror attack was intended to change dramatically the future of South Asia, perhaps even by provoking a war between rising nuclear powers India and Pakistan, according to a top counter-terrorism expert.

Washington, Nov 19 — The 26/11 Mumbai terror attack was intended to change dramatically the future of South Asia, perhaps even by provoking a war between rising nuclear powers India and Pakistan, according to a top counter-terrorism expert.

Bruce Riedel, a former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) analyst, who has advised four US presidents on South Asian issues, says he had pointed this out to then President-elect Barack Obama and his transition team at the time in several briefings. Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taeba group (LeT) had carefully chosen the targets and meticulously researched them over several years, he wrote in The Daily Beast, an American news reporting and opinion website

"They received considerable assistance in doing so from two sources-the Pakistani intelligence service, called the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate or ISI, and Al Qaeda."

"Each had its own agenda for the operation. But the targets were the same - Indians, Americans, and Jews - the targets of the global jihad started by Al Qaeda in the late 1990s," Riedel wrote.

Describing the November 2008 attack as "the most important terror attack since 9/11" he pointed out that the "10 terrorists' tactics have been copied by others since - for example, just weeks ago in Nairobi."

But "perhaps the most shocking element of the Mumbai attack was the role played by David Coleman Headley, an American citizen of Pakistani descent, in the intelligence collection that preceded the attack," Riedel wrote.

Born Daood Sayed Gilani in Washington, DC, in 1960, Headley changed his name at the behest of LeT to hide his Pakistani identity when travelling abroad. In his guilty confession, Headley, Riedel noted, acknowledged "the raid also was planned with active ISI involvement at every stage. At each of his meetings in Pakistan, he said he met with ISI officers as well as the LeT terror leaders."

"Sometimes the ISI gave him particular assignments separate from what the LeT asked; for example, tasking him with taking photos of an Indian nuclear facility near Mumbai," Riedel said.

Yet "the Pakistani mastermind of the Mumbai plot, LeT leader Hafiz Saeed, remains free in Pakistan, where he continues to be a darling of the ISI and regularly calls for more attacks on India and America," Riedel wrote noting "Five years after Mumbai, justice has yet to be served."

The Incredible Shrinking Presidency

Sep 2 2014 11:18am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

I have now received roughly five hundred emails soliciting DNCC and DNC money, circa ten a day for several months. Please stop it. The names of senders are immaterial, since no one would ever believe that anything other than a bot originates this torrent. Why? With more than two years of his presidency remaining and less than 3 months before a decisive mid-term election, this has become the incredible shrinking presidency. You name the issue, do ...

Eli Lake: Obama 'Last Holdout' on Aggressive Action Against ISIS

Sep 2 2014 10:26am CDT | Source: Big Government

The Daily Beast’s National Security Reporter Eli Lake argued that President Obama was the “last holdout” on taking aggressive action against ISIS on Tuesday’s “Laura Ingraham Show.”  “When you have people saying that [ISIS is a threat] for a solid week after the Foley snuff film, and then you have the president say...‘we don’t have a strategy yet’...that tells me, and Josh Rogan and I reported this, the president is the last holdout here.” Lake added that Obama is alone in his own par ...

Insurers Using Familiar Playbook to Protect Profits in California

Sep 2 2014 9:42am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

For the next two months, Californians will to be subjected to a barrage of TV, radio and online ads, which, ironically, they unknowingly will be paying for with their health insurance premiums. The ads are a part of a multi-pronged, multimillion dollar campaign -- developed by public relations, advertising firms and political consultants for the state's biggest insurers -- to convince voters that an initiative on the Nov. 4 ...

Here's Where Obamacare Has Made The Most Progress

Sep 2 2014 9:10am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

More than 8 million people enrolled in private health insurance under Obamacare for 2014, topping expectations despite a rocky start. But that's less than one-third of the number of people who could have signed up -- a sign of the huge untapped market for Obamacare coverage and the challenges still facing the program. In their first year, the Affordable Care Act's insurance exchanges signed up 28 perce ...

Obama's midterm strategy: Do no harm

Sep 2 2014 9:02am CDT | Source: WND

WASHINGTON (AP) — Hampered by low approval ratings and an unfriendly electoral map, President Barack Obama enters the fall campaign as a liability to some vulnerable Democrats and a target for Republicans trying to fire up conservatives and appeal to disillusioned independents. Mindful of his precarious political position, Obama is charting a midterm election strategy intended to help where he can and, perhaps most importantly, do no harm to Democrats. Thus fa ...
