Nirupama Rao named visiting fellow at US varsity

Nov 18 2013, 11:08pm CST | by IANS

Washington, Nov 19 (IANS) Former Indian ambassador to the US, Nirupama Rao, has accepted a one-year appointment as the Meera and Vikram Gandhi Fellow with the Brown-India Initiative at the Watson Institute for International Studies.

Washington, Nov 19 — Former Indian ambassador to the US, Nirupama Rao, has accepted a one-year appointment as the Meera and Vikram Gandhi Fellow with the Brown-India Initiative at the Watson Institute for International Studies.

Rao, who retired earlier this month after a 40-year diplomatic career, begins her appointment in January 2014, Providence, Rhode Island based Brown University announced Monday. While at Brown Rao will be writing a book focusing on how the advent of new media technologies are changing the way countries respond to policy-related situations.

"I look forward to my year at Brown University with great anticipation. The India Initiative at Brown's Watson Institute has provided a needed and valued focus on the study of contemporary India," Rao said.

"I am thrilled to contribute to scholarship on India's global outlook and its foreign policy priorities and challenges."

"Ambassador Rao's accomplishments are immense and well known. Her intellectual approach to diplomacy has always distinguished her," said Ashutosh Varshney, director of the Initiative. "She will add greatly to our collective life at the India Initiative."

Rao, who was India's ambassador to the US from Sep 2011 to Nov2013, previously served as foreign secretary. The first woman spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Rao also served as India's first female ambassador to China from 2006 to 2009.

The Brown-India Initiative is an interdisciplinary hub for the study of contemporary India, the university said.

Its goals are twofold: to produce first-rate academic research, and to contribute to public discourse on and in India through talks, events, and the convergence of figures from across the lines of academia, civil society, literature, public policy, and journalism.

Instead of asking new mates about where they stand on key political issues, you could just lean forward and take a big whiff. In a study recently published in the American Journal of Political Science, lead investigator Rose McDermott, Ph.D., of Brown University, found that adults were more likely to be attracted to the body odors of people who had similar political beliefs and repelled by the body odors of those with opposing ideologies. "People could not predic ...

The Fix: The real reason for America’s polarization? Look next door.

Aug 4 2014 3:57pm CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

A month or so ago, an early copy of Marc J. Dunkelman's "The Vanishing Neighbor: The Transformation of American Community", arrived in my mailbox.  I started reading it -- and was fascinated by how Dunkelman, a research fellow at Brown University’s A. Alfred Taubman Center for Public Policy and American Institutions, diagnosed the problems of partisanship and polarization in the country. With Dunkelman's book out today, I asked if we could publish an ad ...
