35 killed in China oil pipeline blast

Nov 22 2013, 8:30am CST | by IANS

Beijing, Nov 22 (IANS) At least 35 people were killed and 166 others injured when a leaking oil pipeline caught fire and exploded Friday in the coastal city of Qingdao in China's Shandong province, authorities said.

Beijing, Nov 22 — At least 35 people were killed and 166 others injured when a leaking oil pipeline caught fire and exploded Friday in the coastal city of Qingdao in China's Shandong province, authorities said.

Among the 166 injured, 65 are in serious condition, Xinhua reported citing a comment posted Friday on the official microblog of the Qingdao municipal health bureau on Sina Weibo, China's Twitter-like microblogging service.

The accident happened around 10.30 a.m. at the crossing between Haihe and Zhaitangdao road in Huangdao district when workers were repairing a petroleum pipeline, according to the Qingdao government's publicity office.

The pipeline had begun leaking oil at around 3 a.m. at the crossing between Qinghuangdao and Zhaitangdao road, the office said.

Oil leaking from the Sinopec pipeline into the municipal pipe network caused the explosion, according to an initial investigation.

The district government has ruled out a terror attack as the cause.

About 1,000 sq m of road surface was covered with leaked oil at the Zhaitangdao road. Some of the oil had spilled into the Jiaozhou Bay through the rainwater pipeline, said the rescue headquarters.

Fires and explosions also occurred in the polluted sea waters at the entrance to the bay, it said.

Oil flow through the pipeline was shut off at about 3.15 a.m. The fire was put out, and barricades were set up to stop the oil from entering the sea.

Environmental monitoring showed that the concentration of toxic materials in the air was below the national standard.

The 176-km pipeline, which links oil depots in Huangdao to Weifang city, home to a few petrochemical plants, is owned by Sinopec, China's largest oil refiner.

Pieces of cement and debris were scattered around the explosion site, which is close to the coast.

The pipeline, with a total investment of 1.3 billion yuan ($211.8 million) was put into operation this August. It has an annual transportation capacity of 15 million tonnes.

Huangdao district is connected with the city by the Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Bridge.

Today's Empire Builders

Nov 1 2014 7:08am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Empire builders appear to be back in style. They are with us today both in reality and in fantasy. They present the world with the same dilemma that has troubled victims in the past -- how does the rest of the planet deal with them. One of the recurring themes in human history has been the rise of the empire builder -- leaders who seek to conquer territory beyond their own borders. Historically, they have been autocrats or authoritarians o ...

The most dangerous animal in the world

Oct 31 2014 7:29pm CDT | Source: WND

The most dangerous creature in the world is not the black mambo, the African lion or even a mama grizzly defending her cubs. The most dangerous creature in the world is a lame duck. The lame duck has no regard for the life, liberty or property. It is so widely reviled that the American people once tried to exterminate it. But it crawled back from the verge of extinction to greater numbers and more power than ever. We’re speaking of a la ...

Imagine a world without America

Oct 31 2014 7:19pm CDT | Source: WND

What is going on in the world? It seems like chaos is reigning. We have a terrorist army of Islamic radicals, hell-bent on our destruction, known as ISIS. We have what are described as “lone wolf” attacks in New York City and Canada from those who adhere to the terrorist principles of ISIS and others. Then there is the spread of Ebola. These are scary times. A recent poll pointed out that voters believe “America has spun off its axis and is ...

Feminism: Today's Women's Ku Klux Klan

Oct 31 2014 7:17pm CDT | Source: WND

For decades we have wrestled with feminism. Too many men and women still say they are feminists on the assumption feminism seeks equality – a prevarication drilled into our heads by feminists for 50 years. When you watch the feet and ignore the lips, the primary political and social goals of feminism are obvious. The core feminist agenda all along has been the destruction of marriage, the persecution of men, the killing of unborn children, gratuitous self-victimization and entitling ...

Choice Between Voters and Rioters?

Oct 31 2014 4:35pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

"Voter fraud" or "voter suppression" defines current contortionist politics, too frequently depending on one's party affiliation. There are some lessons America can garner from the experience of other societies more recently and perhaps its own before most US voters were born. Democracy frustrated can erupt into civil disobedience, even violence. More immediately, by pressing "voter suppression" with little evidence of "voter fraud, ...

Why America Elects So Few Women Compared To The Rest Of The World

Oct 31 2014 2:08pm CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

CREDIT: AP Depending on how midterm elections play out next week, women in Congress could reach a milestone 20 percent. But before celebrating, consider this: The United States is currently ranked at 85th in the world in terms of women legislatures* – a spot it holds with San Marino – a microstate completely encapsulated by Italy. Zimbabwe. Honduras. Kazakhstan. China. Vietnam. Afghanistan. Tunisia. Cuba. Iraq. Sudan. Bosnia. Eritrea. And even Saudi Arabia. Those are just so ...

Study Says Curbing Population Growth Won’t Help Address Climate Change

Oct 31 2014 1:56pm CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

CREDIT: Shutterstock If you’re looking to reduce the pressure humanity is putting on the climate and global ecosystem, curbing population growth can’t help you much. That’s the conclusion of new research published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which modeled various approaches to slowing population growth — from the reasonable to the monstrous to the completely catastrophic — to see how they’d play out. These included benign atte ...
