26 killed in South Africa road accidents

Nov 22 2013, 3:12pm CST | by IANS

Cape Town, Nov 23 (IANS) At least 26 people were killed in two separate road accidents in South Africa Friday, authorities said.

Cape Town, Nov 23 — At least 26 people were killed in two separate road accidents in South Africa Friday, authorities said.

At least 15 people were killed and several others injured when a minibus crashed into a stationary truck in KwaZulu-Natal province' Umkomaas town, Xinhua reported citing Netcare 911, an emergency service. Three of the injured are in crititical condition, it said.

The driver of the minibus lost control while going downhill and the vehicle crashed through a fence and collided with the lorry parked by the roadside, Netcare 911 spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said.

The driver sustained minor injuries and was arrested.

In another accident, a bus crashed into a passenger car in Makhado town in Limpopo province, killing 11 people and injuring 47 others, six of them critically and 11 seriously.

Five of the deceased were in the car, while six were in the bus, according to the Limpopo roads and transport department.

The bus driver was blamed for the accident as he reportedly overtook on the barrier line.

The two accidents followed the country's worst road carnage in decades near Pretoria Nov 11, which killed 29 people and injured 30 others.

Following Friday's accident in Limpopo province, President Jacob Zuma urged law enforcement authorities to promote road safety through visible enforcement.

"We urge road users, especially drivers, to take extra care and exercise utmost vigilance on the road. They must obey the rules of the road at all times as they are the custodians of the lives of our people on the roads. We cannot continue losing people in this manner," Zuma said.

The government currently is enforcing a 'drive safely' campaign designed to curb road carnages, particularly during the upcoming festive season in the country, which is notorious for road accidents.

According to the latest WHO data published in 2011, road traffic accidents deaths in South Africa reached 8,646 or 1.45 percent of total deaths. The age adjusted death rate is 20.17 per 100,000 of population. Official figures show that drunk driving and excessive speed were "common denominators" in many of the fatal crashes.

South Africa Cracks Down On Poachers As Rhinos Continue To Be Slaughtered For Prized Horns

Jul 23 2014 4:16am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

2014 Vodacom Durban July
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A rhino poacher in South Africa has been sentenced to 77 years in prison in one of the heaviest penalties aimed at curbing poachers who target rhinos for their horns, which fetch a high price on the illegal market in parts of Asia. The sentencing of Mandla Chauke, a South African who was arrested in Kruger National Park in 2011, shows that South African courts are s ...

The Nightmare of Gaza Continues

Jul 19 2014 6:37am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Northern Illinois v Massachusetts
I can only imagine the horror in Gaza today as Israel intensifies its assault of that overcrowded, impoverished strip. It is a continuing nightmare story of pain and loss, of trauma and devastation. The heartbreaking numbers by themselves tell part of the story -- with hundreds killed, thousands wounded, tens of thousands without homes, and now 600,000 without water. But the story of Gaza is more than these numbers and this current assault. ...

Presbyterian General Assembly Biennial Meeting: My Message on Israel and Palestine

Jun 16 2014 1:22pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Sarajevo: War Scars
As the Presbyterian General Assembly gathers for its biennial meeting, I reach out in prayer and solidarity that the Assembly will make a strong witness for reconciliation, justice and peace. I am aware that the Assembly will consider eight overtures on the confounding and intractable conflict in Israel and Palestine, however I am especially urging the Assembly to adopt the overture naming Israel as an apartheid state through its domestic policies and ...

Italy Without Gianluigi Buffon in Debut Game Against England

Italy will be without captain Gianluigi Buffon for their epic match against England on Saturday. Buffon confirmed an ankle injury will keep him on the sideline. The team practiced at the stadium in Manaus late Friday night when Buffon twisted his ankle and could not finish. Buffon is Italy’s go-to man for the past 15 years and was one of the main reasons why they won the 2006 World Cup. His importance showed even more in 2010 when he left in South Africa due to a sciatic nerve problem. Ita ...

A person (L) looking to work within the
For the past few weeks, the country’s distinct national navel-gazing has shifted to the military. It began with horror stories about the treatment of veterans at Veterans Affairs facilities across the country and has reached a crescendo in the curious case of Taliban hostage Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, exchanged for five fierce-looking Muhammadans from Afghanistan’s Jihad Central. As to the first: Backlogs, limited services, fewer service providers, substandard treatment, filthy ...

It is difficult, almost impossible, to envisage an early negotiated ceasefire to put an end to the unconscionable carnage in Gaza. President Obama has spoken more than once to Prime Minister Netanyahu on the need for a cease-fire, but always deferentially.
