UN urges implementing law protecting Afghan women

Dec 8 2013, 6:14pm CST | by IANS

Kabul, Dec 9 (IANS) The UN has called for implementing the Elimination of Violence against Women (EVAW) law in Afghanistan.

Kabul, Dec 9 — The UN has called for implementing the Elimination of Violence against Women (EVAW) law in Afghanistan.

"The EVAW law, when it is applied, has provided protection to Afghan women facing violence," Xinhua reported citing Georgette Gagnon, the director of Human Rights of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, during a press conference here.

The law punishes acts of violence against women and harmful practices including child marriage, forced marriage, domestic violence against women and girls, giving away a woman or girl to settle a dispute between two families or tribes, rape and beating.

A UN report on implementation of the EVAW law, obtained from police, prosecutors and the court in 18 Afghan provinces between October 2012 and September 2013, indicates advancement and continuing gap in enforcement of EVAW law in the provinces including Kabul, she said.

It was implemented in 18 of the Afghanistan's 34 provinces.

According to the report, 650 cases of violence had been registered against women over the period with prosecutors using the EVAW law in 109 or 17 percent of the cases and the court applying the law in 60 decisions.

However, in the previous year from October 2011 to September 2012, according to the report, 470 reported incidents of violence against women were registered to which the EVAW law was applied in 72 or 15 percent of cases with courts using the law in 52 decisions.

The EVAW law was enacted by President Hamid Karzai in 2009 to end violence against women and provide protection to them in the strife-torn country.

Why an unequal planet can never be green

Sep 30 2014 4:44pm CDT | Source: WND

(Common Dreams) — What is it going to take to save the planet from environmental devastation? Sheer people power? We certainly saw that on the eve of last week’s UN Climate Summit in New York. Some 400,000 marchers packed the streets of Manhattan. Millions more rallied the same day in over 2,600 other actions in 162 countries. Or can simple shaming get world leaders to start seriously addressing the climate change challenge? We saw some s ...

Sep 30 2014 12:00pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Obama, with a 45-minute speech before the United Nations, wants us to think he's ready to get serious about facing down Islamic State (ISIS) militants in the Middle East. After months of minimizing the threat posed by the radical group terrorizing Iraq and Syria, and with his credibility and poll numbers sinking, the president is finally talking tougher. "I have made it clear that we will h ...

Without Peace, Can There Be Development?

Sep 30 2014 11:14am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

As UN Member States follow last week's General Assembly debates with the months-long intergovernmental negotiations around the post-2015 development agenda, this is a critical time to remind all stakeholders that a strong goal on peace and security must remain on the list of proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which currently number at 17. War, violence and high levels of crime affect over 1.5 billion people i ...

Vatican: UN Guilty of ‘Apathy’ and ‘Indifference’ in Face of Multiple Global Conflicts

Sep 30 2014 9:20am CDT | Source: Big Government

With unprecedented candor, the Vatican has censured the United Nations, accusing it of “apathy” and “indifference” in the face of the violent conflicts besieging the world today. Rather than hiding behind diplomatic generalities, the Vatican did not mince words in taking the UN to task, calling the organization “irresponsible.” On Tuesday the Vatican released the full text of its address to the General Assembly of the United Nations, del ...

UN Again Spreads Overpopulation Fears

Sep 29 2014 8:42pm CDT | Source: Big Government

A new report from UN statisticians says their earlier predictions about global population stabilization are wrong and that we are on the cusp of major and dangerous growth.  The UN Population Division has traditionally been an objective purveyor of information used by UN and other policy makers around the word. This was the case under longtime Population Division chief Dr. Joseph Chamie, who is now connected to Ford ...
