UN urges implementing law protecting Afghan women

Dec 8 2013, 6:14pm CST | by IANS

Kabul, Dec 9 (IANS) The UN has called for implementing the Elimination of Violence against Women (EVAW) law in Afghanistan.

Kabul, Dec 9 — The UN has called for implementing the Elimination of Violence against Women (EVAW) law in Afghanistan.

"The EVAW law, when it is applied, has provided protection to Afghan women facing violence," Xinhua reported citing Georgette Gagnon, the director of Human Rights of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, during a press conference here.

The law punishes acts of violence against women and harmful practices including child marriage, forced marriage, domestic violence against women and girls, giving away a woman or girl to settle a dispute between two families or tribes, rape and beating.

A UN report on implementation of the EVAW law, obtained from police, prosecutors and the court in 18 Afghan provinces between October 2012 and September 2013, indicates advancement and continuing gap in enforcement of EVAW law in the provinces including Kabul, she said.

It was implemented in 18 of the Afghanistan's 34 provinces.

According to the report, 650 cases of violence had been registered against women over the period with prosecutors using the EVAW law in 109 or 17 percent of the cases and the court applying the law in 60 decisions.

However, in the previous year from October 2011 to September 2012, according to the report, 470 reported incidents of violence against women were registered to which the EVAW law was applied in 72 or 15 percent of cases with courts using the law in 52 decisions.

The EVAW law was enacted by President Hamid Karzai in 2009 to end violence against women and provide protection to them in the strife-torn country.

In Singapore LGBT Case, UN Human Rights Office Gets Human Rights Law Wrong

Nov 4 2014 9:33am CST | Source: Big Government

Last week the Singapore High Court demurred in overturning Singapore’s 76-year-old law against men having sex with men. In deflecting the case, the High Court said the law was a matter for the legislature and that the court should not itself become a mini-legislature itself. Additionally, the Court refused to read certain phases into the Constitution that are not there, such as “sexual orientation.” The UN Office of the High Commission for Human Rights, howeve ...

IPCC Scientists Emphasize Immorality Of Inaction By Focusing On ‘Irreversible Impacts’

Nov 4 2014 8:09am CST | Source: ThinkProgress

CREDIT: Shutterstock What is the biggest change in the new climate report by the world’s top scientists and governments compared to the one they released back in 2007? It can be summed up in one word: “Irreversible.” In the 2007 assessment of climate science by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), that word appeared only 4 times in the final, full “synthesis” report. Irreversibility on ...

Break the Cycle of Mass Incarceration

Nov 3 2014 11:37am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

When politicians want to show their constituents that they're concerned about their safety and well-being, they'll say that they're "tough on crime." It's an easy enough position to take. Nobody likes crime. Everyone wants to live in safety. But the reality behind the rhetoric is a system of mass incarceration that's short on genuine solutions to crime and rife wi ...
