US tech giants campaign against government snooping

Dec 9 2013, 9:44am CST | by IANS

Washington, Dec 9 (IANS) Overcoming their rivalries, eight US tech giants have joined hands to launch a public campaign asking the Obama administration and the US Congress to put a check on government surveillance through internet.

Washington, Dec 9 — Overcoming their rivalries, eight US tech giants have joined hands to launch a public campaign asking the Obama administration and the US Congress to put a check on government surveillance through internet.

All together, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter, LinkedIn and AOL issued an open letter to President Barack Obama and members of the US Congress calling for reforms and restrictions on government surveillance.

The heads of the eight companies including Google's Larry Page, Yahoo's Marissa Mayer and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg endorsed the campaign.

"While the undersigned companies understand that governments need to take action to protect their citizens' safety and security, we strongly believe that current laws and practices need to be reformed," the CEOs said.

Arguing that surveillance has gone too far, the companies said they are improving encryption and fighting to limit surveillance requests besides asking for new legal changes to limit surveillance.

"The balance in many countries has tipped too far in favour of the state and away from the rights of the individual - rights that are enshrined in our Constitution. This undermines the freedoms we all cherish. It's time for change," the CEOs wrote.

The tech giants' campaign comes in the wake of former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden's revelations on the agency's vast surveillance databases, many of which are part of programmes with intelligence agencies in other countries.

The US law requires tech companies to cooperate with court-ordered surveillance programmes. The NSA is also known to use other means to snoop on e-mail and other communications.

The surveillance is hurting the companies' businesses around the world as they are viewed as working too closely with US intelligence.

"People won't use technology they don't trust. Governments have put this trust at risk, and governments need to help restore it," Microsoft's general counsel, Brad Smith said in a blog post.

Why Aren't We Giving More to Charities Fighting Ebola?

Oct 28 2014 10:23am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

I was wondering yesterday why I haven't made a donation to fighting Ebola. It seems I am not the only one. Americans tend to give generously when disaster strikes, but we've been slow to donate to organizations battling this disease. Even well publicized donations from Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and most recently, $100 million from Paul Allen haven't quite galv ...

'Participant, Southeast Asia War Games, 1961-1975: Second Place.'

Cross-posted with TomDispatch.com More than a few times I've found myself in a crowd of Vietnam veterans, and more than a few times at least one of them was wearing a curious blue or yellow t-shirt. Once that shirt undoubtedly fit a lean physique of the late 1970s or early 1980s, but by the time I saw it modeled, in the 2000s, it was getting mighty snug. Still, they refused to part with it. On it was some variation of th ...

Will Immigration Swing New Hampshire to The GOP?

Oct 25 2014 11:35am CDT | Source: Big Government

This article was originally posted on powerlineblog.com and written by John Hinderacker. In New Hampshire, Scott Brown has pulled into a statistical dead heat with incumbent Democrat Jeanne Shaheen. Brown is not a staunch conservative on every issue; if he were, he would not be competitive in purple New Hampshire. But one issue on which Brown is strong is immigration. That, plus the fact that by all accounts he has crushed Shaheen in their debates, has propelled him into a stro ...

Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) is hurting American workers by supporting amnesty for illegal aliens and a massive increase in legal immigration. Ebola Handling: How Conservatives' Hysterics Compare to Meaningful Responses from Philanthropists, Celebrities, and Doctors

Oct 23 2014 3:57pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Ebola has dominated the news for weeks now. Clearly, it's politics that drives the discourse, not the realities of the vicious virus. Few medical professionals have been asked to voice their opinions and concerns. What happened? Hysterical Handling of Ebola Hurts Immigrants and America at Large Lacking no-nonsense ideas on the social/economic issues they've been elected to handle, far-right GOP politicians and their sympathizers jumped on a bandwagon linking Ebola to immigrati ...

Scott Brown Nails Shaheen on Immigration: 'I Want to Fight for Jobs for New Hampshire' over Jobs for Illegal Aliens

CONCORD, New Hampshire — Former Sen. Scott Brown opened up the economic battlefield on immigration here Tuesday night with a little help from NBC’s Meet The Press host Chuck Todd. “When you’re looking at that bill, what it also does is it immediately gives an opportunity for the president to authorize upwards of 11 million people to get jobs,” Brown said when talking about the Senate-passed “Gang of Eight” immigration bill. “I want to fight for jobs for New H ...

Hammond: Other Countries Must do More to Fight Ebola

Oct 21 2014 10:57am CDT | Source: Big Government

British foreign secretary Philip Hammond has criticised the lack of investment from other European nations into the planned £800 million Ebola fund, of which Britain has contributed almost a third of the total so far. So far responsibility for aid delivery to Ebola-stricken areas has been divided by Colonial heritage, with the United Kingdom, France, and the United States of America taking the lead in former African colonies Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia respectively. De ...
