Israel drafts new defence doctrine

Dec 9 2013, 4:26pm CST | by IANS

Jerusalem, Dec 10 (IANS) Israel's security establishment has drawn up a new defence doctrine, as the country's political actors are increasingly expressing worry over the welfare of the Jewish state in the region, The Jerusalem Post reported Monday.

Jerusalem, Dec 10 — Israel's security establishment has drawn up a new defence doctrine, as the country's political actors are increasingly expressing worry over the welfare of the Jewish state in the region, The Jerusalem Post reported Monday.

The daily, citing senior military sources, said that the six-layered doctrine, devised by the defence ministry, the Home Front Command and the general staff of the army, aims to provide better responses to the threat of rockets and missiles in wartime, Xinhua reported.

The first two layers are deterrence and diplomacy, tools that can be used to "build alliances and take apart enemies" without resorting to military force, the Post quoted a source as saying.

In the event that these two fail, a decisive preemptive strike, coupled with the activation of Israel's multitude of air defences, which comprise the doctrine's third and fourth layers, respectively, would be set in motion.

The fifth layer is passive defences, such as air raid sirens and bomb shelters, and the sixth and last layer centres on the conduct of civilians at a time of war, the report said.

The doctrine comes at a time when Israeli officials are increasingly concerned about its neighbours' growing arsenals of rockets and missiles that can be used against heavily populated urban centres in a future conflict.

A senior Israeli officer last month said that Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah currently stocks some 100,000 projectiles, some of which are capable of striking the Red Sea port of Eilat at Israel's southernmost tip with a one-tonne warhead.

According to Monday's report, Hezbollah had increased its stocks of long-range rockets from 500 to 5,000 since the second Lebanon war in 2006, prompting the Home Front Command to step up emergency preparations for minimising the impact on the civilian population during war.

"One cannot say that there is a front and a home front. The enemy sees the home front as the front in every way," said a military source.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (AP) — A congressman is joining with the family of a New Jersey man who disappeared in Israel to call for his safe return. U.S. Rep. Chris Smith, a Republican from New Jersey, joined a news conference Tuesday in Lakewood, where Aharon Sofer grew up. Smith says that U.S. and Israeli officials are "leaving no stone unturned" as they try to find the 23-year-old rabbinical student. Sofer has been ...

Hamas: Israel's Destruction Remains Ultimate Goal

Aug 25 2014 5:08pm CDT | Source: Big Government

To hear some Palestinian advocates, if Israel simply lifted its blockade on Gaza – aimed at curbing weapons smuggling into the Hamas-controlled territory – then peace could be enjoyed by all. One of the main Hamas spokesman made it clear in an Aug. 17 speech that those advocates are misguided. "The time has come for us to say that our true war is not aimed at opening the border crossings. Out true war is aimed at the liberation of Jerusalem, Allah wil ...

Bomb Fired From Gaza Kills Israeli Child: Report

Aug 22 2014 10:42am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

JERUSALEM, Aug 22 (Reuters) - A mortar bomb fired from Gaza killed a four-year-old Israeli child in a border collective farm on Friday, Israeli security sources said. The boy would be the fourth civilian in Israel to be killed in an attack from the coastal territory since the outbreak of conflict on July 8, and the first Israeli death since an Egyptian-brokered truce broke down earlier this week. More than 2,000 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict ...

Killer App in Jerusalem

Aug 21 2014 7:50am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Jerusalem -- I can't sleep at night. It's not because of the rockets, although Israel is under constant rocket fire. And it's not because of iron dome, although it makes loud booms. The other night at our Jerusalem hotel our six-year old daughter was awoken by the sound of the alarms as a Kassam rocket headed toward the capital. She was frightened. Her older sisters calmed her. They ran ...

JERUSALEM - The results of the latest Israeli Peace Index--a monthly survey conducted by Tel Aviv University and the Israel Democracy Institute--reveal that just .4% of Israeli Jews believe that Israel should concede to all of Hamas' demands for a lasting ceasefire. Meanwhile, 57.8% of Israeli Jews believe that Israel "does not have to meet any of Hamas' demands and should continue to fight until Hamas surrenders." The survey asked 600 Israelis, both Jewish and Arab, a nu ...

The Investigative Project on Terrorism Op-Ed: The President's True Color's Finally Revealed

Aug 18 2014 10:55pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Excerpt from Jerusalem Online: The President's True Colors Finally Revealed: Op-Ed by Steven Emerson When I first glanced at the headline on today's Jerusalem Online and reports in the Jerusalem Post and other Israeli newspapers, I thought they must have been a satire: "Washington officials have told Egypt that the US will guarantee Israel's commitment to any agreement signed." But it was not a satire. This was deadly serious, confirmed by other Israeli ...
