'US Magnitsky Act as long-term spoiler of bilateral ties'

Dec 13 2013, 8:24pm CST | by

Moscow, Dec 14 (IANS) Despite certain progress achieved over issues concerning Syria and Iran, Russia-US relations remain in deadlock because of the so-called Magnitsky Act, Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said Friday.

Moscow, Dec 14 — Despite certain progress achieved over issues concerning Syria and Iran, Russia-US relations remain in deadlock because of the so-called Magnitsky Act, Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said Friday.

"One or even two swallows don't make a summer," reported Xinhua citing Ryabkov in an interview published by the government's Rossiiskaya Gazeta daily.

There was no improvement in bilateral relations; on the contrary, negative trends continue to prevail near the end of the year, the diplomat said. These trends have been fed by the planned expansion of the Magnitsky List, which would inevitably incur Russian tit-for-tat response.

In April, the US released a list of 18 Russian officials suspected of human rights abuses under the so-called Magnitsky Act.

In a tit-for-tat response, Moscow published its own list of 18 US citizens who would be barred from entering Russia.

According to Ryabkov, the Magnitsky Act has become a long-term irritant in bilateral ties, and only Washington's political will could eradicate that source of tension.

Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer for the Hermitage Capital Management investment fund, was arrested in November 2008 and died in a prison a year later while under investigation of his alleged involvement in the fund's tax fraud.

The death of the lawyer triggered a legal chain reaction in Russia-US relations, with the US Congress adopted the so-called Magnitsky Act, which imposed visa bans and asset freeze on Russian officials allegedly responsible for the death.

Russia retaliated by the Anti-Magnitsky Act banning US citizens to adopt Russian orphans and suspending a bilateral agreement on cooperation on children issues.

BBC: 'Civilian' Casualty Figures Supplied by Hamas Require Caution

Aug 8 2014 12:32pm CDT | Source: Big Government

If Israeli attacks in Gaza have been "indiscriminate," as the UN Human Rights Council says, why have they killed three times as many “civilian” men as women? Anthony Reuben, the head of Statistics for BBC News, points out ample reason to be skeptical of the civilian casualty numbers coming out of Gaza: most news organizations have been quoting from the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), which is providing Hamas-based statistics that defy credi ...

Secretary General Ban Ki Moon said that there could be nothing more shameful than Israel killing children while they slept at a UN school that Israel targeted. The UN Commissioner for H ...

How the International Laws of War Abet Hamas, Undercut Israel

Jul 17 2014 10:24am CDT | Source: Big Government

Even as a proposed truce fails, and Israel’s military is set to "intensify" retaliation against the barrage of Hamas rockets, the admonitions have started. The UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights has expressed “serious doubt” that Israel’s military strikes comply with international norms of war. But it is the laws of war themselves that must be questioned.  The international laws of war are widely esteemed ...
