Kerry expresses regret over Indian Diplomat's treatment

Dec 18 2013, 2:16pm CST | by

Washington, Dec 19 (IANS) As the US-India standoff over the "barbaric" treatment of an Indian diplomat in New York continued, the US Secretary of State John Kerry called India's National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon to express his "regret".

Washington, Dec 19 — As the US-India standoff over the "barbaric" treatment of an Indian diplomat in New York continued, the US Secretary of State John Kerry called India's National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon to express his "regret".

In a damage control exercise, Kerry also expressed his concern saying this "unfortunate public issue" of the arrest and strip search of Devyani Khobragade, India's deputy consul general in New York, should not be allowed to hurt "our close and vital relationship with India".

Kerry "expressed his regret, as well as his concern that we not allow this unfortunate public issue to hurt our close and vital relationship with India," State Department spokesperson Marie Harf said in a readout of the conversation.

"The secretary understands very deeply the importance of enforcing our laws and protecting victims, and, like all officials in positions of responsibility inside the US government, expects that laws will be followed by everyone here in our country," she said.

"It is also particularly important to Secretary Kerry that foreign diplomats serving in the United States are accorded respect and dignity just as we expect our own diplomats should receive overseas," Harf said.

"As a father of two daughters about the same age as Devyani Khobragade, the secretary empathises with the sensitivities we are hearing from India about the events that unfolded after Khobragade's arrest," she added.

Earlier, in its first reaction on the issue, White House Wednesday offered to review the procedures that were followed in Khobragade's arrest on charges of visa fraud.

"We understand that this is a very sensitive issue for many in India," White House spokesperson Jay Carney said essentially repeating the statement made Tuesday by Harf.

"We are looking into the intake procedures surrounding this arrest to ensure that all appropriate procedures were followed and every opportunity for courtesy was afforded" to Khobragade, he said.

Like Harf, Carney too stressed that an "isolated episode" should not be allowed to cloud a "broad and deep friendship" and an "important relationship" with India.

ABC's "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos pointed out that not even the British government has agreed to join so far, making it increasingly likely that the U.S. would be going it a ...

On Thursday In a session with the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Secretary of State John Kerry was asked by Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) whether America was at war in Iraq and Syria. Congressman: Obama plotting ISIS airstrikes a 'big mistake'

Sep 18 2014 7:19pm CDT | Source: WND

Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., is ripping President Obama over reports he will personally oversee the bombing of ISIS targets in Syria and believes the bipartisan vote to arm and train Syrian rebels for the fight is a “big mistake.” The U.S. has been conducting air strikes against ISIS in Iraq for weeks. However, according to the Wall Street Journal, Obama is planning to be directly involved in plotting air strikes across the border in Syria. “The U.S. mili ...

More insane arming of 'moderates'

Sep 18 2014 6:24pm CDT | Source: WND

I’m trying to look on the bright side of what passed for debate over another doomed effort to secure U.S. interests by embarking on the fruitless pursuit, cultivation and empowerment of Islamic “moderates,” this time in Syria. We would get better results sending an expeditionary force after the Loch Ness sea monster. No matter. In deliberations resembling a stampede, we heard: The ISIS is coming, the ...

(Washington FreeBeacon) Secretary of State John Kerry gave a long, meandering reply to Chairman of the House Armed Services Military Personnel Subcommittee Rep. Joe Wilson (R., S.C.) after being asked: “Yes or no? Is America at war?” “Well, you know,” Kerry paused to laugh, “Um, I’m going to answer that, Mr. Chairman, but um…you know…” Kerry waffled a while longer, explaining how the American mission against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant ...

HUFFPOST HILL - The House Will Smell Ya Later

Sep 18 2014 4:35pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Turnout was high for today's vote on Scottish independence, and as soon as we know how that'll affect Hillary's chances in Iowa, we'll let you know. Ezekiel Emanuel penned an Atlantic essay titled, "Why I Hope to Die at 75" that had absolutely nothing to do with putting up with an 80-year-old Rahm Emanuel. And the House is avoiding a number of key votes to get back to their districts and tend to the important issu ...

Obama Is Wrong That ISIS Is 'Not Islamic'

Sep 18 2014 4:14pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

"We are fighting an ideology, not a regime." - U.S. Secretary Of State John Kerry "Now let's make two things clear: ISIL is not 'Islamic.' No religion condones the killing of innocents, and the vast majority of ISIL's victims have been Muslim. And ISIL is certainly not a state. It was formerly al-Qaeda's affiliate in Iraq, and has taken advantage of sectarian strife an ...
