Kerry expresses regret over Indian Diplomat's treatment

Dec 18 2013, 2:16pm CST | by

Washington, Dec 19 (IANS) As the US-India standoff over the "barbaric" treatment of an Indian diplomat in New York continued, the US Secretary of State John Kerry called India's National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon to express his "regret".

Washington, Dec 19 — As the US-India standoff over the "barbaric" treatment of an Indian diplomat in New York continued, the US Secretary of State John Kerry called India's National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon to express his "regret".

In a damage control exercise, Kerry also expressed his concern saying this "unfortunate public issue" of the arrest and strip search of Devyani Khobragade, India's deputy consul general in New York, should not be allowed to hurt "our close and vital relationship with India".

Kerry "expressed his regret, as well as his concern that we not allow this unfortunate public issue to hurt our close and vital relationship with India," State Department spokesperson Marie Harf said in a readout of the conversation.

"The secretary understands very deeply the importance of enforcing our laws and protecting victims, and, like all officials in positions of responsibility inside the US government, expects that laws will be followed by everyone here in our country," she said.

"It is also particularly important to Secretary Kerry that foreign diplomats serving in the United States are accorded respect and dignity just as we expect our own diplomats should receive overseas," Harf said.

"As a father of two daughters about the same age as Devyani Khobragade, the secretary empathises with the sensitivities we are hearing from India about the events that unfolded after Khobragade's arrest," she added.

Earlier, in its first reaction on the issue, White House Wednesday offered to review the procedures that were followed in Khobragade's arrest on charges of visa fraud.

"We understand that this is a very sensitive issue for many in India," White House spokesperson Jay Carney said essentially repeating the statement made Tuesday by Harf.

"We are looking into the intake procedures surrounding this arrest to ensure that all appropriate procedures were followed and every opportunity for courtesy was afforded" to Khobragade, he said.

Like Harf, Carney too stressed that an "isolated episode" should not be allowed to cloud a "broad and deep friendship" and an "important relationship" with India.

7 Things to Consider Before Choosing Sides in the Middle East Conflict

Jul 28 2014 1:07pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Are you "pro-Israel" or "pro-Palestine"? It isn't even noon yet as I write this, and I've already been accused of being both. These terms intrigue me because they directly speak to the doggedly tribal nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. You don't hear of too many other countries being universally spoken of this way. Why these two? Both Israelis and Palestinians are complex, with dive ...

Obama: See No Evil, Hear No Evil

Jul 28 2014 12:31pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Elie Wiesel is one of my greatest heroes and I've been lucky to have a warm friendship with him. I would rarely consider disagreeing with such a global moral giant and one of the foremost Jewish personalities of modern times who has had such a profound impact on my life. Except on one issue. Hate. In many conversations, Wiesel (or as I call him, Reb Eliezer) has told me that I am wrong on the subject of hatred. We can't hate even our enemies. It seeps into our blood and po ...

Jul 28 2014 9:41am CDT | Source: Big Government

Reeling from President Obama’s Sunday call for an "immediate unconditional ceasefire" in its war against Hamas, a senior member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government told Israeli Army Radio that Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry should “leave us alone already; go bother Syria.”    The official, Housing and Construction minister Urial Ariel, complained that White House pressure on Israel was “outrage ...

Once Again, Obama Helps Israel by Hurting It

Jul 28 2014 8:51am CDT | Source: Big Government

President Barack Obama's attempt to impose his will on Israel--and save face after Secretary of State John Kerry's disastrous ceasefire mission--continued at the UN Security Council overnight, with a midnight session Monday morning demanding a ceasefire.  It was a gross betrayal of America's best ally in the Middle East. However, it has--quite unintentionally--created a new opportunity for Israel in its war against Hamas. The war has continued Monda ...

Obama's Betrayal of Israel Will Not Be Forgotten

Jul 28 2014 7:08am CDT | Source: Big Government

Israelis have no doubt about why President Barack Obama is imposing a premature ceasefire on Operation Protective Edge: they were winning.  Unlike previous conflicts, where a operational mistakes by Israeli forces targeting terrorists caused civilian casualties and raised international protests, in this case Israel had made no major blunders.  Israel's offense, this time, was its success--which exposed the idioc ...

Kerry Facing Unusual Resistance in Israel

Jul 28 2014 1:41am CDT | Source: Taegan Goddard's Political Wire

"After failing to win a deal to end fighting in Gaza last week, Secretary of State John Kerry is trying to salvage Plan B: a succession of temporary cease-fires that he hopes might yet open the door to Israeli and Palestinian negotiations for a long-term solution," the New York Times reports. "On Sunday, however, Mr. Kerry was having difficulty accomplishing even that, despite a phone call in which President Obama, in a sign of mounting impatience, urged Prime Min ...
