Kerry expresses regret over Indian Diplomat's treatment

Dec 18 2013, 2:16pm CST | by

Washington, Dec 19 (IANS) As the US-India standoff over the "barbaric" treatment of an Indian diplomat in New York continued, the US Secretary of State John Kerry called India's National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon to express his "regret".

Washington, Dec 19 — As the US-India standoff over the "barbaric" treatment of an Indian diplomat in New York continued, the US Secretary of State John Kerry called India's National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon to express his "regret".

In a damage control exercise, Kerry also expressed his concern saying this "unfortunate public issue" of the arrest and strip search of Devyani Khobragade, India's deputy consul general in New York, should not be allowed to hurt "our close and vital relationship with India".

Kerry "expressed his regret, as well as his concern that we not allow this unfortunate public issue to hurt our close and vital relationship with India," State Department spokesperson Marie Harf said in a readout of the conversation.

"The secretary understands very deeply the importance of enforcing our laws and protecting victims, and, like all officials in positions of responsibility inside the US government, expects that laws will be followed by everyone here in our country," she said.

"It is also particularly important to Secretary Kerry that foreign diplomats serving in the United States are accorded respect and dignity just as we expect our own diplomats should receive overseas," Harf said.

"As a father of two daughters about the same age as Devyani Khobragade, the secretary empathises with the sensitivities we are hearing from India about the events that unfolded after Khobragade's arrest," she added.

Earlier, in its first reaction on the issue, White House Wednesday offered to review the procedures that were followed in Khobragade's arrest on charges of visa fraud.

"We understand that this is a very sensitive issue for many in India," White House spokesperson Jay Carney said essentially repeating the statement made Tuesday by Harf.

"We are looking into the intake procedures surrounding this arrest to ensure that all appropriate procedures were followed and every opportunity for courtesy was afforded" to Khobragade, he said.

Like Harf, Carney too stressed that an "isolated episode" should not be allowed to cloud a "broad and deep friendship" and an "important relationship" with India.

U.S. Muslims Appeal To John Kerry For Protection On Mecca Pilgrimage

Sep 1 2014 7:30am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

(RNS) Concerned for the safety of U.S. citizens soon headed to Mecca, 27 Muslim-American groups are asking the State Department to better protect them from violence that has plagued those who have made the pilgrimage in the past. A letter from the group sent Tuesday (Aug. 26) to Secretary of State John Kerry was prompted in part by a 2013 incident in which a group of Sunni Muslims from Australia threatened to kill and rape a group of Shiites from Michigan. The letter reads: “We urg ...

Barack Obama And The Misery Of His Augusts, Ranked

Aug 31 2014 6:30am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

There was definitely a time in President Barack Obama's life in which he looked forward to August. He was, after all, born on Aug. 4. And Hawaii seems like it's maybe the best part of America in which to spend an August. And on Aug. 3, 2004, he was one day away from celebrating his 43rd birthday and basking in his first week of officially becoming what Vice President Joe Biden might refer to as a "big f--king deal," ...

Sowing seeds of our own destruction

Aug 29 2014 6:10pm CDT | Source: WND

The American people had better wake up! Our so-called leaders, President Barack Hussein Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, with the end of the latest Israeli-Hamas war, are about to resume their slick, under-the-table scheme to fund Hamas with U.S. dollars, allegedly earmarked for humanitarian purposes. As explained in excruciating detail in a complaint I filed Thursday against these criminals (see FreedomWatchUSA.org), Obama and company – and let’s also throw th ...

HUFFPOST HILL - But Tan He Lead?

Aug 28 2014 4:02pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

A Republican study finds the GOP's in trouble with female voters, so we expect future campaigns to focus on deporting women. Hillary Clinton spoke out on Ferguson, wisely waiting until there was no risk of sniper fire. And Mitch McConnell tried to tamp down fears of another government shutdown, saying, "The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-shutdown president." This is HUFFPOST HILL for Thursday, August 28th, 2014: OBAMA SPEAKS ON ...

Aug 28 2014 2:39pm CDT | Source: WND

Attorney Larry Klayman, fresh off a preliminary court ruling that the National Security Agency’s spying on Americans likely is unconstitutional, now has named President Obama and others in a racketeering complaint. Klayman, founder of Freedom Watch and a columnist for WND, alleges the president and others laundered U.S. taxpayer money that was spent on Hamas rockets fired against Israel. The civil lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington ...

Afghanistan's Election Becomes a Farce -- And a US Policy Disaster

Aug 28 2014 11:42am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

It's hard to pinpoint the exact moment when Afghanistan's presidential election became a complete absurdity. With a US-brokered audit process of the election already behind schedule, and with outgoing president Hamid Karzai declaring September 2 as the swearing-in day for the country's next leader, the election process suffered yet another blow on Wednesday when Abdullah Abdullah, a f ...
