27 killed in Iraq attacks

Dec 23 2013, 8:30pm CST | by

Baghdad, Dec 24 (IANS) At least 23 people and four suicide bombers were killed and 14 wounded in separate violent attacks across Iraq Monday, police said.

Baghdad, Dec 24 — At least 23 people and four suicide bombers were killed and 14 wounded in separate violent attacks across Iraq Monday, police said.

In one attack, gunmen broke into the offices of Salahudin satellite TV channel and the nearby Iraqia official television's headquarters in Tikrit, capital of Salahudin province, killing five staffers and wounding three when four suicide bombers blew themselves up, Xinhua reported citing a provincial police source.

The attack occurred in the afternoon in Tikrit, some 170 km from Baghdad, when the suicide bombers blew up a car bomb at the entrance of the four-storey TV station building, the source added.

In another incident, four army officers and two soldiers were killed in a mortar barrage on a military base in Abu Ghraib area, some 25 km from Baghdad, a police source said.

The attack came as Iraqi security forces backed by helicopters were conducting a large-scale offensive against Al Qaeda militants in Sunni region, stretching from west of Baghdad through the province of Anbar to the border with Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

Also on Monday, two soldiers were killed in a roadside bomb explosion near their patrol in Akashat area near the Iraqi-Syrian border in Iraq's Anbar povince, a provincial police source said.

Meanwhile, gunmen broke into a barber shop in Fallujah city, some 50 km from Baghdad, leaving one person dead, a police source said.

Elsewhere, gunmen opened fire from their assault rifles on a pet shop in Doura district in Baghdad, killing four people, a police source said.

In a separate incident, three Shiite pilgrims were killed and six wounded when gunmen opened fire on their bus while travelling on a highway in southeastern Baghdad, the source said.

The pilgrims were heading to the holy Shiite city of Karbala, some 110 km from Baghdad, to observe the Arbaeen religious ritual ahead of its climax day next Tuesday.

In Diyala province, one Shiite pilgrim was killed and five wounded in a gunmen attack on their minibus near the provincial capital city of Baquba, some 65 km from Baghdad.

Also in Diyala, a civilian was shot dead by gunmen in the town of Hibhib, some 20 km north of Baquba, the source said.

According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, 8,109 Iraqis, including 952 members of security forces, have been killed in the country from January to November this year.

Sep 30 2014 10:21am CDT | Source: Big Government

During Monday's National Security Action Summit, NumbersUSA's Rosemary Jenks, one of the nation's foremost immigration experts, said America must better screen legal immigrants to avoid another terrorist attack. Vatican: UN Guilty of ‘Apathy’ and ‘Indifference’ in Face of Multiple Global Conflicts

Sep 30 2014 9:20am CDT | Source: Big Government

With unprecedented candor, the Vatican has censured the United Nations, accusing it of “apathy” and “indifference” in the face of the violent conflicts besieging the world today. Rather than hiding behind diplomatic generalities, the Vatican did not mince words in taking the UN to task, calling the organization “irresponsible.” On Tuesday the Vatican released the full text of its address to the General Assembly of the United Nations, delivered Monday by Secretary of St ...

Embracing Assad Is a Better Strategy for the U.S. Than Supporting the Least Bad Jihadis

Sep 29 2014 6:05pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Middle East today is in as big a mess as I've seen it in a lifetime. By most measures it still continues to worsen, as ever new enemies to the U.S. pop up onto the scene. It is attracting polarized youthful jihadis from both East and West ready to fight us -- all high on the blood aphrodisiac of beheadings and bombings. The U.S. and most other countries understandably seek to suppress the present sav ...

Just 24 percent of respondents predicted that they will be affected a great deal or a fair amount by the airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, while 60 percent said the strikes will have not much or no effect on their lives ...

Asymmetric Warfare Goes Both Ways

Sep 29 2014 12:55pm CDT | Source: Big Government

This story originally ran at Cicero Magazine: During the last decade and a half of militant extremism with global ambitions, asymmetric warfare has been a much-ballyhooed concept sometimes alleged to give the weaker belligerent an inherent, automatic advantage. But this is a gross oversimplification, and when it takes root in the minds of those threatened by and opposing terrorism, it can become a self-defeating distortion of the truth. Asymmetric warfare goes b ...

Rick Santorum Suggests That Only Muslims Are Violent

Sep 29 2014 9:53am CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

Ex-Senator and religious film producer Rick Santorum blasted practitioners of Islam at the Values Voter Summit this past week, contending that the current conflict in the Middle East is a product of an age-old fight between the West and those who see the world in a “fundamentally different” way — namely, Muslims. During his speech to the assembly on Friday and a subsequent interview with The Daily B ...

Obama faults spies for ISIS failures

Sep 29 2014 7:32am CDT | Source: WND

(DAILY BEAST) Nearly eight months ago, some of President Obama’s senior intelligence officials were already warning that ISIS was on the move. In the beginning of 2014, ISIS fighters had defeated Iraqi forces in Fallujah, leading much of the U.S. intelligence community to assess they would try to take more of Iraq. But in an interview that aired Sunday evening, the president told 60 Minutes that the rise of ...
