Midlothian, TX, February 27, 2014 –(PR.com)– U.S. Senate candidate Ken Cope today blasted Obama administration plans to reduce the size of the U.S. Army to pre-World War II levels, calling it a "dangerous move that only increases the chance of war."
Cope, a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel with 27 years of service, called on Republicans and any Democrats who still favor a strong America to push back hard against Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel's plans for deep cuts in troop strength and in soldiers' pay and benefits.
"This is completely unacceptable," Cope said. "We are talking about emasculating our national defense. In one disgusting move, President Obama would significantly weaken our military strength, all so he can use the money on social welfare programs.
"He may see this as one of his 'fundamental transformation' changes, but all that patriotic Americans see is a President who can't even hide his disdain for the military. We all thought the weakening of the military under President Carter was bad, but this is much worse."
Cope noted that the message these cuts send to the world is one of American weakness. Sapping America's military power would only encourage Chinese expansionism and dangerous confrontations by rogue states such as North Korea and Iran, he said.
"This reduction in our ability to defend our interests or extend American power is a dangerous move that only increases the chance of war," Cope contended. "We would be incapable of fighting on more than one front at a time. That means our allies, and the world, will be much less safe."
Cope added that under the Constitution, the most important function of the federal government and the President is the nation's defense and protection. "President Obama apparently missed that the one time he read the Constitution," Cope said. "Apparently he has the idea that social welfare programs are all that matter. But without a strong military, we won't be able to protect those programs any more than we will be able to protect our borders, our people, or our interests."
Cope, seeking to unseat incumbent Sen. Cornyn, said if elected, he would show the leadership on this issue that Cornyn won't. "Unfortunately, Sen. Cornyn has helped create an environment where Democrats know that the Republicans will capitulate on most issues. This is one time where he and other Republicans simply can't throw up another white flag of surrender."
