Aug 18 2014 11:39am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

There's been a lot of chatter about Florida's upcoming vote on medical marijuana legalization bill, Amendment 2. But No On 2, a campaign partially funded by Las Vegas casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, is taking the talk in a new, low direction: suggesting that legalizing marijuana used for people with seizure disorders and diseases would lead to date rape by pot cookie. (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) ret ...

Disclosure needed as Obama administration reverses lobbyist ban

Aug 15 2014 9:00am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Obama administration announced it will reverse part of the lobbying ban it instituted in 2010 and allow registered lobbyists to serve on any of 1,000 advisory boards, commissions or panels that provide policy making advice to the government. Reporting on the subject, Politico noted "watchdog groups" were "disappointed" by the decision. The Sunlight Foundation -- often labeled one of those "watchdog groups" -- is, in fact, not disappointed. ...

Perry pushes for end to online gambling

Texas Gov. Rick Perry By Andrew J. Ireland WASHINGTON – Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s recent push to end online gambling has raised the eyebrows of “Casino Jack,” a.k.a. Jack Abramoff, the nation’s most notorious former lobbyist. In March, Gov. Perry, a likely presidential hopeful for 2016, sent a letter to congressional leaders and the House and Senate Judiciary Committees asking Congress to reverse a 2011 Department of Justice interpretation of the Wire ...

Photo credit: Wikimedia Commons Here's a wacky idea: If you want to reduce the amount of money in politics, and in particular "dark money," make disclosures less frequent. So argues Lindsay Mark Lewis, the executive director of the Progressive Policy Institute and the former finance director for the DNC, in a provocatively titled article, "The Easiest Fix for Dark Money: Disclose Less Often." I've seen some odd arg ...

Gaza and Lobby Politics

Jul 16 2014 10:37am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

It occurs to me that the continuing Gaza war can be viewed (in addition to viewing it as part of Israel's continuing battle to maintain the occupation) as a testament to the failure of American democracy. Hear me out. Everyone knows that the only way to permanently end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is by Israel getting out of the territories occupied after the '67 war in exchange for ironclad ...

Longtime Eat The Press readers know that our official position on 2016 speculatin' in the year 2014 is that we'd love it if there was far, far less of it. But that doesn't mean we'd like none.
